Friend is on holiday abroad at the mo & is literally posting 20 photos daily on Facebook and Instagram. Her holiday looks lovely but why the hell would you waste your precious holiday time posting constantly on social media? When I go on hols, we switch off all phones & social media to get away from it all as generally I am frazzled and want a break from everything.
Aibu or is this the done thing now? It’s like a bloody ‘look at us’ news report every day 🤪

We did a month-long camping tour holiday last month. I shared photos every few days via Instagram and probably daily with my parents/grandparents on WhatsApp. Photography is my hobby and it certainly doesn't affect my enjoyment of our family time. As a family our screen time etc... Is generally minimal, so using a phone to take and share a few photos doesn't feel particularly detrimental. I share on Instagram or Facebook, because I have friends who are genuinely interested in my children (as I am in theirs) but we don't often have time to catch up in person. If you don't like it, hit snooze, or don't follow me, I know it's not everyone's thing, so no skin off my nose!

"Some people use their holiday to switch off from social media and disconnect."

"Some people don't welcome a feed of other people's holiday photos at this time of year."

"Some people use social media as a way of relaxing and to let family know what they're getting up to on holiday."

"Some people enjoy snooping through holiday photos."

"Getting annoyed by things that have no impact on you is pointless."

All of the above statements are true.

Why does it bother you?

I know someone who did this on their honeymoon!

Every day we got shots of breakfast, lunch and dinner. A daily video of their activities. Photos of said activities. All in real time. About ten selfies a day.

Then they came home and got annoyed when people weren’t interested in their honeymoon photos- it wasn’t disinterest, it was simply that we had seen them all before!

People think this is a new phenomenon, but I can remember when I was young it was common for people to invite their friends around to show them their holiday snaps. You’d have to make a polite interested face and noises for every single one. There might be more photos these days now that you don’t have to buy rolls of film, but at least in FB if you’re not interested you can just click ‘like’ on the first one and scroll past the rest.

It only takes me a few seconds to take a photo and upload it onto social media. Luckily this leaves me thousands and thousands of free seconds every day to do lots of other stuff.

Unless, I'm somehow doing it wrong.

FB holiday snappers fall into two camps for me: those who post genuinely interesting photos of the scenery, and those who post very uninteresting pics of hot dog legs, drinks by the pool in Turkey, selfies, and endless pics of their kids not being as interesting as they think they are. Unfortunately there seems to be an inverse proportion of quality over quantity between camps. Anyway as I said earlier, FB and Insta are behind me now! I’m off to the beach today and no one will get to see my lovely pics but I doubt v much they’ll really care Grin

We all totally missed the opportunity to spam this thread with our holiday pics.

Gutted.
