Daily holiday social media updates

Friend is on holiday abroad at the mo & is literally posting 20 photos daily on Facebook and Instagram. Her holiday looks lovely but why the hell would you waste your precious holiday time posting constantly on social media? When I go on hols, we switch off all phones & social media to get away from it all as generally I am frazzled and want a break from everything.
Aibu or is this the done thing now? It’s like a bloody ‘look at us’ news report every day 🤪

Well, I have quite an extensive list of places I've visited on holiday.

I have IBD and often browse and post on social media when my body is trying to shit out my internal organs.

But I read a book a day on my last holiday so I guess that's alright.

ragged · 21/07/2019 22:16

What is social media good for if not approved of to share info about good things that happen in your life?

Genuine question.

SerenDippitty · 21/07/2019 22:27

I like looking at holiday photos if they are somewhere interesting/scenic and I can get some idea of what the place looks like. Endless selfies, photos of food and drinks, photos of them on the beach, round the pool, in bars not so much.

VirginiaWolfHall · 21/07/2019 22:42

Dunno ragged... is it good for anything at all? I came off FB and Insta last year after nearly ten years of daily scrolling and posting once or twice a month and I can honestly say I don’t miss them one little bit. I don’t feel as if I’m missing anything at all and has reminded me that we used to function quite happily without SM. It’s made me much closer to my actual friends in fact, because I make a proper effort to keep in touch, and anyone else who I thought I was friends with have now gone back to being mere acquaintances and that’s absolutely fine by me.

Pegase · 21/07/2019 23:12

Do all the people grumbling about SM realise that a) privacy settings exist so you are not advertising to the whole world and b) you don't have to have 1000 "friends". I have a very small group of actual family and friends on FB and we enjoy seeing each other's pictures.

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 22/07/2019 00:19

I love the photos!
More photos!

Who are these weirdos who turn their phones off on holiday?

ParrotsForLife · 22/07/2019 00:24

I have an acquaintance who recently went on a 3 or 4 day city break in Europe who seemingly posted every single photo she took on Facebook, there was over 450!
I get posting the odd one of two interesting or pretty moves, but she took the biscuit.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 22/07/2019 00:53

Did you count them individually?

Elvesdontdomagic · 22/07/2019 00:59

I also switch off on holiday but your post is very sneery and 'holier than thou'. People use social media differently. Why don't you just hide the person/posts if it bugs you so much? Confused

ragged · 22/07/2019 08:10

VWH make the perfect suggestion, there.
If you don't like Social Media, Stay Off It.

The rest of us who enjoy seeing our friends be happy can still be on SM. Perfect. Everyone happy.

Apart from DC, all my relatives live 5000 miles away. SM is a great way for us to keep in touch.

Dongdingdong · 22/07/2019 08:20

Genuine question: to all those saying that you’re advertising your house to burglars by posting on social media that you’re away - how do these burglars find out your exact address? I can’t see how anyone could, unless you’re posting that information on a public profile (and no one I know does that).

exLtEveDallas · 22/07/2019 08:21

I'm off today. I'll probably post one photo from the airport, then another as we are coming in to land (I love the look of Hurghada from the air). On hols I'll probably post every few days, more if we do specific trips or sights.

If my FB friends don't like it I am very happy for them to mute or unfollow me, it wouldn't bother me a bit.

I like social media. I like posting and reading FB, Twitter and MN. I wouldn't use it if I didn't. I like my FB friends and most of my Twitter followers. Even on MN I have actual friends whose posts I enjoy seeing.

If you don't, well that's your problem, not mine Smile

EleanorReally · 22/07/2019 08:28

i might have agreed with you but dd is away for a month so her updates are treasured.
my ds also posted plenty, although she did apologise afterwards

if you like the person you will like the photos!

cleofatra · 22/07/2019 08:30

We have one of these going at the moment. With goady hashtags like #myfamilyisbetterthanyours

Why? Because you are on holiday?
pffffft

Dongdingdong · 22/07/2019 08:32

We have one of these going at the moment. With goady hashtags like #myfamilyisbetterthanyours

Someone genuinely used that hashtag? Shock

cleofatra · 22/07/2019 08:35

@Dongdingdong

Yes. And also uses #myhusbandisbetterthanyours if her DH does anything like cooks a meal or whatever

exLtEveDallas · 22/07/2019 08:35

Jeez. I would never use a hashtag like that (in fact, I don't use hashtags on FB, who does?) That would be a swift unfollow.

Dongdingdong · 22/07/2019 08:37

God that’s grim - it’d be a swift unfollow from me too!

JoyceJeffries · 22/07/2019 08:38

A handful of photos - fine.
Constant updates is showing off. I snooze them for 30 days but if they are repeat offenders I unfriend them.

SusanneLinder · 22/07/2019 08:47

I like to see people's photos on holiday. It might be somewhere I have never been, or somewhere I fancy going so to see photos of somewhere is a great idea.
Re security, my facebook/ insta is locked down so if people see them, it's only friends or family.
I don't post umpteen pics when I am away. I wait till I'm home.

AnnaSteen · 22/07/2019 08:48

YABU! It doesn’t take more than 2 minutes to post a photo on social media. I recently did a two week holiday where I visited 4 different places. I posted some photos on the train from one city to the next which took a max of 5 minutes of my time so I also got to enjoy my train journey. I also am only friends with 20 people on Instagram so I doubt my closest friends are going to rob my house if I post a holiday photo 😐 One of my friends is doing an amazing road trip across the US. I’m loving her photos. It’s so interesting to see all the places they are visiting. Another friend travels a lot and I love looking at her photos. I love seeing what my friends and family are up to.

As to those switching off phones! I couldn’t do that. What about an emergency and no one can contact you? I once had to call my sister on holidays and tell her our grandfather had died and she needed to come home. If she had switched off her phone she would have missed the entire funeral and landed home to the news he is gone and it would’ve been so stressful for our family to not be able to contact her. I always have my phone on and charged on holidays. Plus it’s my camera!

JacquesHammer · 22/07/2019 09:03

I’m still amused by the “but why don’t you read a book” suggestion. As if the two are mutually exclusive Grin

MadamePompadour · 22/07/2019 09:09

Also if the holiday is that good surely you wouldn't need/want to be reading a book?! :) All these poor book reading holiday people must have shit holidays ;)

MaryShelley1818 · 22/07/2019 09:37

I love looking at other people’s holiday photos, but I actually like my friends and enjoy seeing them happy and having a good time.

I must be VERY talented as on holiday I can manage to have a fab time, read a book, swim, travel, visit places AND find a spare minute to upload a photo or 2! Surely most normal people can do more than one thing on holiday?!

There’s some very bitter and unhappy people around.

Mia1415 · 22/07/2019 10:11

I post photos. If people don't like it they can scroll by, hide me or delete me as a friend.
