To ask where to buy school shoes

For a 5yo boy just starting school? He will have them scuffed by the end of the first week so I dont want to pay £45 for clarks shoes, but at the same time I dont want to get cheapy ones that aren't good for his feet. I know mumsnet will help me out on this one...

There is a Facebook link for school shoes that come with a year’s guarantee. I think they are called treads.

I haven’t bought them as I want shoes professionally fitted. I have walked out in the past where not happy with fitters,

Treads are so so heavy. My poor son got less than a term before the Velcro broke.

Can you get to a Clark’s outlet? My sons cost about £24 there.

Also ASDA, great quality. Tesco not very good.

I go to a small independent store that stocks clarks, startrite and the other decent brands. Decent fitting shoes are a must for me and I can live with scuffs as long as the shoes fit properly

Buy scuff coat. But look for designs with a wide rubber bumper as it does help

This style are good because they have a big rubber bumper at the front.

I also found Startrite longer lasting than Clarks. My boy gets through on average 3-4 pairs per school year but I found that Sainsbury's own brand were the best yet and the last shoes he had were a pair from there that lasted quite a while. They're by no means pristine but they've faired better than more expensive brands

Just polish them if they get scuffed, they'll still be OK! It is really worth getting proper fitted shoes while their feet are still growing and so malleable.

Big fan of Startrite shoes as they are so hard wearing and have excellent customer services. Buying cheaper shoes can actually be more expensive in the long run as they don’t last as long.

Our school allows trainers I've bought these for the second year as they lasted perfectly could do another year if not for the size

M&S are pretty good for them!

Startrite or Geox . Get your son’s feet measured and keep an eye on amazon? I got my son’s last school shoes for about 25 quid on amazon . Still in the shop for £55 .

Asda or Sainsbury's. Around £14-£18 and they always last my dcs half a school year. Never bothered with Clark's. Asda all the way!

They are expensive but don’t be worried about a few scuffs . A little shoe polish will sort those out . I have only ever had to buy one pair of shoes per year for both my children . Buy good shoes if you can but shop around for the best price .

School shoes are expensive!!
If you can find anywhere that stocks a German brand called Superfit, they are light and hardwearing, but you not have much change from £60.

We have also had very good experiences with m&s school shoes, which are around the £30 mark. They don’t measure in store, but they have measuring gauges. DH used to be a shoe fitter, so he is in charge of procuring school shoes.

My DS is a size 7, going into Y6, adult size age 10, he now attracts VAT.

They fit very similarly to Clark's so I get ds measured and order from amazon

Think about it, they wear the shoes 5 days each week for around7-8 hours. They need to have good fitting and comfortable shoes.

DD’s scruffed fast but she needed soft leather ones or she would have blisters day in, day out. We just polished them every second day in the evening.

We bought Ecco and Ricosta, they do only full sizes so less replacement when they grow their feet. Geox is another brand which worked well in the past.

School shoes are expensive. I do Clark’s outlet which makes them a fair bit cheaper. But they last the whole school year, worn every day, playing football at lunchtime...you do actually get your money’s worth (unless they lose them on PE day 🙈)

I have two boys and have always found clarks shoes to be long lasting, only ever replacing them at the start of a new school year or if their feet grow.. i think correctly fitted shoes are really important for growing feet, i go to an independent shoe shop that stocks clarks shoes and have very experienced fitters.

Spend £50 and get Doc Martens. My DD is a shoe wrecker and these are the only ones that don't get ruined in weeks! Sainsbury's? Unwearable after one half term. Docs that we bought at Easter? Still look new!
