To ask where to buy school shoes

For a 5yo boy just starting school? He will have them scuffed by the end of the first week so I dont want to pay £45 for clarks shoes, but at the same time I dont want to get cheapy ones that aren't good for his feet. I know mumsnet will help me out on this one...

Yes you're all right about the length of time they are in them etc. I've had a look at geox too and theres some lovely ones

M&S have seen mine through the whole year with barely a mark on them. Look for ones with a rubber bumper

VolcanionSteamArtillery · 20/07/2019 22:53

Kickers hi tops Amazon. When they grow out of them i get the next size up. They are indestructible.

MintChocAddict · 20/07/2019 22:55

Another vote for Clark's outlet if there's one fairly close. You can shave a fair bit off the normal Clark's prices and they last for ages.
Supermarket ones are a false economy as they need replacing more regularly.

SeraphinaDombegh · 20/07/2019 22:57

We're fans of M&S. Easily as good quality as Clarks but cheaper.

BikeRunSki · 20/07/2019 23:05

Clark’s shoes have never lasted rityhrhmog my DC more than a term before falling apart.(they are just finishing Y5 and Y2, I have bought many, many pairs of school shoes).

Hotterthanahotthing · 20/07/2019 23:09

Its awhile ago but Asda, get their feet measured so you know the speed they're growing.Wait until as near to the new term as you can bear when they're little as they can have growth spurt.

Goonergirl14 · 20/07/2019 23:17

M&S for me (I work for them so am biased! 😃). I find they are cheaper or the same price as Clarks. I also like Tesco for school shoes, I usually get them for a spare pair but often my DC's prefer them so they become the main pair.

Merryoldgoat · 20/07/2019 23:21

I got Toezone from Sainsbury’s for my son last September and they lasted a full year. They’re scuffed to buggery now but for £18 I was extremely pleased.

Korvalscat · 20/07/2019 23:28

Usually dgs is fine with Clarks but the last pair seemed to be a treated leather, I commented at the time they were purchased that they were so shiny they looked patent. When he scuffed the shoes the top layer began to peel and they also cracked and peeled in the creases/wear lines. Needless to say they looked pretty ratty by the end of term, even though they are polished every morning before school.
Dgs has a new pair in September and for the past couple of years has a growth spurt in Jan/Feb requiring a second pair for the rest of the year and until this last pair regular polishing ensured that they still looked decent until he outgrew them.

hiddeneverythin · 21/07/2019 17:50

I sent dh a photo of a lovely pair of kickers but he said they're "too good for school" meaning too expensive! Time to impart my new-found mumsnet wisdom on the merits of spending a bit more

Yeah, school shoes are one of those things I refuse to skimp on. It’s just not worthwhile. I tried cheap ones once and they were fucked after two months. I’ve bought doc martens ever since, they’re fantastic and last all year.

MonstranceClock · 21/07/2019 17:55

Doc Martens. I wouldn't even entertain any other shoe. My daughters still look brand new.

averythinline · 21/07/2019 17:59

Ricosta - 1 pair a year honest and DS is heavy on his feet - they have a slim and a wide version.... if ds has v wide would recommend startrite
I found great
we found fashion shop shoes just fell apart - they are on there feet lots and football/scooting/rain etc
get some polish - its good for them as welll.....
Clarks are not great fit for lots of kids with slimish feet (the heel is wide even on their slimmer widths )
I have bought from here and teh lady is really helpful ....

BikeRunSki · 21/07/2019 18:30

DS has just finished school. He has had the same pair of Ricosta shoes since last September. My children’s school shoes have always been in pieces by the end of the school year, and we’ve always thrown them away on the last day. I’m keeping ds’s shoes though, there is still life in them. If they still fit in September, he’s going back in them.

MegaMonsterMunch · 21/07/2019 18:40

They do decent prices Startrite, Kickers and Sketchers on www.mandmdirect.co.uk - a fraction of the price. For what it's worth, I've found Clarks rubbish.

Mrscog · 21/07/2019 18:43

M&S here, £22 for a pair that last until they’re grown out of. Look for the ones with a rubber toe cap!!!!

TantricTwist · 21/07/2019 18:46

Clarks with a rubber bumper were the only ones that would last for my DS in Primary School. As I recall the best ones had a dinosaur on the sole.

okeydokeygirl · 21/07/2019 18:58

I have always bought Clarke's or Startrite and had DDs feet measured and fit properly. Sizes vary massively depending on the shoe style even in the same brand. Startrite generally harder wearing. However I would always expect a pair of these expensive school shoes to last as long as they fit. E.g. if worn out BEFORE DD grown out of them I would expect them to be replaced. Have taken back more than one pair of shoes on this basis and Clarke's have provided new shoes. So if you are going to buy make sure you keep the receipt.! Can't do that now DDs feet not growing anymore but would still expect to
A pair of leather school shoes to last a school year if p9lished regularly. Shame the soles and heels are often moulded so can't wait be replaced. I am over 50 and still have shoes from when I was 14 as have reheeled or resoled them. I do have a bit of a thing about shoes though.

okeydokeygirl · 21/07/2019 19:00

Apologies for typos!

myself2020 · 21/07/2019 19:03

Superfit or primigi for us. clarks are clumpy, and last 2 weeks if you are lucky. similar for startrite

SweepTheHalls · 21/07/2019 19:04

Geox!

Hepte · 21/07/2019 19:05

We go to the clarks outlet. The younger shoes have rubber which comes quite high at the front and protects the shoes from scuffs really well. I find them worth every penny.

diaduittoyou · 21/07/2019 19:07

Try shoesforkids- often discount Clarks etc. Or Clarks or start rite outlet.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 21/07/2019 19:08

Geoxx - ds2 is heavy on his shoes but these last him until his feet grow. Well worth the money.

Otherwise, anything with the rubber that goes over the toes lasts much longer than without.
