To ask which one is your favourite Greek island?

and why?

Me and my boyfriend are looking for a one week holiday in Greece in August - I know it's hot which is what we love and I know it is expensive but that's just unfortunately how it is if you want to travel in August.

We would like to visit an island where you can relax, enjoy the nice beaches as well as doing something cultural or different. Anything you can think of that you visited on a Greek island and was a great experience?

Any advice would be helpful! We are thinking of going for a week.

Going to Zakynthos!

Thanks for everyone :) We have been to Rhodes and it was lovely (Lindos) and definitely want to go back there however I think exploring the other islands would be nice too.

I'd love to go to Santorini perhaps next year but feels like it has become ridiculously popular and maybe expensive - flights are rather pricey.

Kefalonia. Not as stylish as Santorini, but sleepy and friendly with gorgeous food and beaches. I’ve been to Zante/Zakynthos, Corfu, Rhodes, and Mykonos too and loved them all. Kefalonia overall winner though.

IndieTara · 18/07/2019 19:41

Zakinthos or Kefalonia

OrangeCinnamon · 18/07/2019 20:10

Ooh first time for us at Zakynthos too this summer, this was 3 -4 years ago but we had to go to Santorini for a wedding. We set up flight alerts with easy jet and booked that way

Nestro · 18/07/2019 20:54

Lots of dodgy advice here. We have been to 37 greek islands and depends what uou want. If only a week you need an island where you can fly direct. Santorini is amazing but mainly scenery and expensive. I suggest Kefalonia, or Kos. Crete is huge so unless you know exactly where to go forget it.

needmorespace · 18/07/2019 21:06

Kefalonia. Every time.

goose1964 · 18/07/2019 21:12

Another vote for Naxos, it's a ferry hub so great for island hopping. We also love Crete especially the Chania area, we honeymooned on Skiathos which has the most amazing beaches but when we went it was the middle of August and the first week was full of Italians taking up huge amounts of room on the beach and driving around on mopeds until the early hours

cccameron · 18/07/2019 21:16

Good choice OP. Had a lovely holiday in Zakynthos last summer.

Honeysuckleandroses · 18/07/2019 21:21

Kefalonia for me. Been six times. I hated Corfu and Kos. It depends what you want, but if you're happy with a relaxed vibe, no night life to speak of and less commercialism, Kefalonia is great. It's also very easy to drive there.

WarmthAndDepth · 18/07/2019 21:22

Serifos. Would love to go again, but not doing flying anymore, so only very fond memories.

Honeysuckleandroses · 18/07/2019 21:22

Sorry it wasn't Kos I hated, it was Zayknthos.

DumbledoresArmy · 18/07/2019 21:35

We have visited Santorini, got married in Kefalonia. Both stunning but we return to Zante every year.
We have fallen in love with it!

OP which resort are you staying at?
We stay in Alykanas.

damnson · 18/07/2019 21:38

Skiathos

iamme21 · 18/07/2019 21:38

@dumbledoresarmy we stay in Alykanas too! Love it ther,e got back a couple of weeks ago but might try and go back in September

Scripto · 18/07/2019 21:47

Crete- big, need to go back and do different bits. Lots of history. Some really beautiful bits.
Kephalonia - lovely but not sure i’d Go again
Rhodes - lovely bits, not so lovely bits. lots of history, really good to use as a base to hop to other islands
Symi - very pretty but tiny. Ok for a day or 2.
Zakynthos - My second favourite. I’d move there tomorrow if I could. Flattened by the same earthquake that flattened Kephalonia so nothing ancient but its heaven. Avoid the clubby bit.

I cant tell you my favourite island because other people might discover it and go there and spoil it.

DumbledoresArmy · 18/07/2019 21:52

@iamme21 we got back on 4th July!
Where do you stay? We stay at Danny's!!
Love it there. It's home to us

Kefalonia is lovely, Corfu I wasn't fussed on but I couldn't give you a proper reason why I just didn't really love it. Crete is my favourite especially slightly off the beaten track, my favourite is a little village just above Hersonissos called Koutouloufari where I kept going back year after year and befriended a parrot in one of the tavernas which remembered my name and greeted me.

Oh I so agree about Koutouloufari - I got engaged a couple of years back to my Greek fiance Grin He and his family own a group of hotels a 15 minute drive away so we regularly go there - got my ring from the little jewellers there and some amazing places to eat. We also regularly go out of season to Sissi which is lovely too but my absolute favourite place is his family home which is up in Mohos - moving out there next year, can't wait Wine

iamme21 · 18/07/2019 22:31

@dumbledoresarmy we got back on 30 June so probably overlapped by a few days! We stay at the Valais, I love it there too

Serin · 18/07/2019 22:33

Parga (not an island though).

teenagenonfanclub · 18/07/2019 22:34

Ithaca everytime

Grilledkippers · 18/07/2019 22:37

Kefalonia is my happy place. A battered authentic charm (earthquake) , stunning beauty, arse clenchingly scary roads overhanging the coast, Fiskardo, Myrtos Beach, Assos (hold on to your sphincter on the way down/up) lovely Luxouri square with the locals and they’re kids chilling late into the evening. Ahhh sigh.

Grilledkippers · 18/07/2019 22:39

Auto correct ‘their kids’ tut

StarbucksSmarterSister · 18/07/2019 22:40

It depends how touristy you like it. I really don't like Kos, much of Rhodes is spoiled sadly, same for Corfu although there are places which are lovely still.

Crete - huge, full of amazing archaeology, some tat resorts on the north east coast but really beautiful places too. Chania and Rethymnon are lovely, Elounda has stunning scenery, Panormos is the perfect village.

Skiathos - tiny island, gorgeous town, fab restaurants, amazing beaches. Glorious outside July/August but it's green for a reason so you'll get a day of rain on most holidays. I go a lot.

Samos - green, beautiful and not too touristy.

Kefalonia- most beautiful island I've visited, great beaches in the south. Yet, despite a great holiday I have no desire to return.

Lefkas - outside Nidri it's totally unspoilt.

Plus the small islands Symi and Ithaca are heaven on earth.

I go twice a year and it's not enough!

StarbucksSmarterSister · 18/07/2019 22:43

Oh and on the mainland another vote for
Parga, the Peloponnese is lovely and Pelion is magical.

LesLavandes · 18/07/2019 22:53

Any advice on what area to stay on Kefalonia? I want sandy beaches, village tavernas by beach or harbour. No crazy nightlife. I will be alone. Thank yoi
