To ask which one is your favourite Greek island?

and why?

Me and my boyfriend are looking for a one week holiday in Greece in August - I know it's hot which is what we love and I know it is expensive but that's just unfortunately how it is if you want to travel in August.

We would like to visit an island where you can relax, enjoy the nice beaches as well as doing something cultural or different. Anything you can think of that you visited on a Greek island and was a great experience?

Any advice would be helpful! We are thinking of going for a week.

Milos gets my vote too

Kefalonia for is beauty and it's people. It's quite hilly and green, the sand is that gorgeous soft sand that I love to dig my feet into. Lots to see if you fancy hiring a car - under ground caves, beautiful fishing villages.

My Greek customer recommends Skopelos for somewhere a bit more unspoilt. It's on my list.

Trottersindependenttraders · 18/07/2019 10:09

@Dawnofskeggy1 the turtles were still there last year. We saw them in Argostoli harbour swimming around and generally being majestic and beautiful. They weren't there this year, but I think possibly because we were a bit later in the day and had missed them.

Been to quite a few, but our favourite are Parga and Lefkada, both mainland, but beautiful

What was weird about elefant1’s comment?!

Bunnylady53 · 18/07/2019 10:12

Sorry just noticed that the next post was also about Skiathos

Bunnylady53 · 18/07/2019 10:13

I have only been to Crete but we had a lovely week there.

Loyaultemelie · 18/07/2019 10:26

Kefalonia is lovely, Corfu I wasn't fussed on but I couldn't give you a proper reason why I just didn't really love it. Crete is my favourite especially slightly off the beaten track, my favourite is a little village just above Hersonissos called Koutouloufari where I kept going back year after year and befriended a parrot in one of the tavernas which remembered my name and greeted me.

Booboo66 · 18/07/2019 10:34

Kos and kefalonia are stunning. I've not been to santorini but I'd absolutely love to, it looks amazing. Another option depending on the reasons you've chosen Greece is Cyprus. Obviously not a greek Island but greek language, food and culture, so much to explore including the north Turkish occupied side for a real mix.

Lovely thread! It's given me lots of ideas to visit Greek islands - I've only been to Crete and Athens so far and am dying to go to a few other islands.

Has anyone been island hopping with kids? I'd love to do that one summer.

Angech74 · 18/07/2019 10:41

I've been to Crete, Kefalonia and Corfu. All are wonderful and there isn't one of them that I wouldn't recommend. However, if you're looking for more "relaxed" I'd recommend Kefalonia. The Drogerati Caves and Melissani (under ground) lake are spectacular.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 18/07/2019 11:32

I've only been to Kefalonja and Corfu.

I enjoyed Kefalonia but fell completely in love with Corfu. We stayed in Kalami which is nice and quiet. We hired a boat and explored a bit. Found a beautiful restaurant in Agni bay which we would eat at every night if we could afford to! Drove around a bit to see other bits of the Island ( avoiding Sidari and Kavos which we've heard bad things about)

We went back to Corfu again this year after loving it so much last year and I can see us going back again and again.

I’ve never had a bad time on any Greek island, though there’s not a huge amount of sightseeing to do on most unless it’s a big one like Crete. Bit surprised by the love on here for Athens, I’ve spent a lot of time there and I think it’s a dump.

missyB1 · 18/07/2019 11:39

Been to quite a few and enjoyed them all - except Rhodes. If I had to pick a favourite I would say Crete.

missyB1 · 18/07/2019 11:42

Angels we also stayed in Kalami its fabulous and we are thinking of going back there next year. And I know exactly which restaurant you are talking about!

BigSandyBalls2015 · 18/07/2019 11:59

Kefalonia

Kos to see the Asklepion (world's first hospital) and see the tree hippocrates sat under. Beautiful beaches including 'bubble beach' which is a natural phenomenon. Zia the mountain village with gorgeous sunsets. Then boat to Bodrum for the day to see the remains of the temple at Halicarness (sp) one of the seven wonders of the ancient world and visit Bodrum castle built by the knight of the templer which includes a museum about underwater excavation.
Kalymnos is a boat trip away and you can see dolphins and find out about sponge divers, also great climbing.

Megan2018 · 18/07/2019 12:07

Santorini

Absolutely love it there, beautiful.

Rosejasmine · 18/07/2019 12:21

Crete - Chania, the old Venetian town/harbour is beautiful and more history/culture than you can see in one week on Crete.
You can fly into Chania airport, stay in the Akritori peninsula North of Chania where there are lovely beaches (v. close to airport), and there is a short drive into Chania where there are loads of restaurants and shops. There are nice beaches to the west of Chania too.

TheOnlyMrsW · 18/07/2019 12:29

Watching with interest as we're going to Crete for the first time in August and can't wait

Mumminmum · 18/07/2019 12:35

Corfu. I like the sandy beaches of Pelekas, the rock pools and the good restaurant at the boating club NAOK in Corfu town and the tranquility of the tunnels under the Old Fortress. In Corfu town there is a wide pavement just next to the bay from the centre almost all the way to Mon Repos. It is so beautiful to walk there in the evening.

myusernamewastakenbyme · 18/07/2019 13:52

Ive been to Zante...Crete and Rhodes...I loved them all.

Lauren83 · 18/07/2019 14:08

Skiathos

Smellslikebiscuits · 18/07/2019 14:11

Symi - absolutely beautiful.
Take a ferry from Rhodes harbour, and get ready for the stunning view of Symi as you arrive.
It gets crowded in the afternoon with day trippers, so escape to the beaches by water taxi.

Tanith · 18/07/2019 14:15

I have only ever been to Skiathos - a long time ago. It was very beautiful and I loved it.

The plane landing and take-off are terrifying, though!
