Toothache but nothing wrong with my teeth!

Went to dentist today. Had x-rays, she spent ages looking at my teeth and gums. I've got hideous toothache. I KNOW which tooth it is coming from because it's related to me eating hot or cold food and when I touch it it hurts. She said my teeth are great. She can't see anything wrong so can't treat. Said I just have to hope it settles down.

Wtf do I do? I'm in pain but can't do anything about it.

Yes but they explicitly state that they will not treat dental pain. There's no walk in dentist

Your dentist says it’s not dental pain so it might be worth seeing a go at the walk in centre

Greenglassteacup · 19/07/2019 10:11

Go = GP

BibbleBrain · 19/07/2019 10:12

Also another one for sinusitis. As a student I had four emergency dental appointments and every time they xrayed and you could see that my sinuses were cloudy. Had same entire face ache, could lift head off pillow without sobbing. I’m meantime try steaming your face with Vicks in water.

poorbuthappy · 19/07/2019 10:12

So say you think you have a sinus infection? It's certainly very very possible.

Greenglassteacup · 19/07/2019 10:13

Yes, a GP could assess for this at the walk in centre

namechangedtohelpyou · 19/07/2019 10:14

It's not sinusitis. It's in my lower tooth, hurts like a bitch when I have hot or cold. Hurts to specifically touch that tooth. Gum is tender. It is NOT SINUSITIS

Sounds like sinus pain which can be agonising.

Take painkillers and order a Neti pot or get some salt spray from the chemist. Beconase spray is good too.

Greenglassteacup · 19/07/2019 10:16

Three options: Gp at walk in centre today to assess whether there’s anything else going on other than dental. Wait for next available appt at dentist to be re-assesses. Go to a&e if it’s unbearable

LoafofSellotape · 19/07/2019 10:16

Maybe an abscess if the gum is sore?

AFistfulofDolores1 · 19/07/2019 10:17

If you can't get an appointment, I'd push for a phone call at the very least and a prescription for antibiotics and pain relief that works with your breast feeding. They should tide you over until you can see someone.

CarrieBlu · 19/07/2019 10:17

OP, I don’t suppose you’re breastfeeding any DC at the moment? I often get toothache whilst breastfeeding.

Greenglassteacup · 19/07/2019 10:18

She is breastfeeding, that’s why she can’t take decent pain relief

CarrieBlu · 19/07/2019 10:22

Apologies, missed that page of posts. My dentist told me that breastfeeding was weakening my teeth, hence the toothache. Tends to ease after a week or so when it happens. If I’m careful and have a very calcium rich diet and take supplements, it doesn’t happen so much. More of an occasional dull ache.

CarrieBlu · 19/07/2019 10:23

Not that that will help much for now! But the dentist has never found anything wrong with my teeth either. Hope it eases for you soon.

BeckyWithTheSplitEnds · 19/07/2019 10:25

If you've got a teaching hospital near you, it might be worth giving them a ring to see if they can see you. I had NO idea that teaching hospitals have a "walk in" service.

My dentist referred me to them because 2 of them at the practice had 6 months apart taken x-rays and could find nothing - and because like you - I went through the roof when she touched my teeth with her gloved finger. Not just one specific tooth I should add.

I'm now under the care of the consultant at the dental hospital and have been having further tests - am just waiting on MRI results.

spinn · 19/07/2019 10:25

My sinusitis is always bottom tooth, agony to touch.

If you bend over and pain gets worse it's sinuses, if pain doesn't change more likely to be tooth ache.

I can't help on breastfeeding safe meds but at its worst I was on full doses Sudafed, plus antihistamine and all pain meds - no idea which of this you can take, worth a chat with pharmacist. Also had a wheat pack heated up and held on my face for some pain relief. Mine went on for 4-5 weeks cos I didn't see gp and tried to ride it out - I've had it 2-3 times and first time convinced I needed the tooth out....since had that tooth removed for other reasons and the pain is usually still in the same place where there is no tooth left.

Sinus pain ispressure on the nerves which also run through the jaws so it's often pushing on the same nerve hence the displaced pain.

Dentist has given all clear so def worth seeing gp.

Ooh, what about doing sinus rinse (google it- neilmed is the brand we've done before) - that will be safe for breastfeeding as it's saline water only.

IsobelRae23 · 19/07/2019 10:33

OP got to the walk in- you have been to a dentist, and you were told it’s not
Dental pain. What other option do you have? Tell them you had x-rays and they found nothing. I feel for you though, I think toothache is worse than labour.

OstrichRunning · 19/07/2019 10:39

I had a sore tooth with no obv cause. Ended up in dental hospital, was told I clench my teeth at night. They made me a teeth mold thing to wear at night, and after a few days the pain went. Now I only get the pain occasionally, and then I wear the mold again.

It might be related to me having a slightly asymmetrical jaw - when you open your mouth wide, do you hear a clicking or anything on one side?

Google TMJ which is a related jaw problem that can cause what feels like toothache.

resipsa · 19/07/2019 10:41

Abscess that dentist missed possibly? Does it hurt more when you lie down? Risk of spread is worth A&E visit if only to get ABs...

yeahokright · 19/07/2019 11:34

If you are in that much pain go to a&e for sure.

dottiedodah · 19/07/2019 12:41

I would try A and E if you can .If no luck can you ask your chemist for something safe to use while BF?.At night sometimes eases pain to sleep sitting up if u can (advised by 111 nurse ).Even if your Doctor is fully booked, do they not have a service whereby you can get advice over the phone, and leave a prescription out for you?.Ours works by phoning early on and Doc will call u back .Try A and E first if you can .Hope you feel better soon , toothache is the worst!

Ruleof4 · 05/12/2019 17:16

Could it be you locking your jaw at night without realising? Try massaging the area around the jawline

Thebookswereherfriends · 05/12/2019 17:23

Could it be you clench your teeth in your sleep? I had really awful pain in a tooth that came and went over a couple of months. Got checked at the dentist, all fine. Woke up suddenly one morning with the pain and realised my jaw was very tightly clenched and the pain came from one particular tooth pressing on another. I do jaw stretching and relaxing exercises before I sleep now and I’ve not had it since.
