Toothache but nothing wrong with my teeth!

Went to dentist today. Had x-rays, she spent ages looking at my teeth and gums. I've got hideous toothache. I KNOW which tooth it is coming from because it's related to me eating hot or cold food and when I touch it it hurts. She said my teeth are great. She can't see anything wrong so can't treat. Said I just have to hope it settles down.

Wtf do I do? I'm in pain but can't do anything about it.

Hi op I once had tooth pain that was related to pain in my neck - it just radiated up through my teeth and was excruciating

FudgeBrownie2019 · 18/07/2019 17:44

I had a similar-sounding pain early this year - it turned out to just be sensitivity in one tooth; no real reason for it and no decay or anything the dentist could do. Oil of Cloves and Sensodyne were my friends.

FancyAPint · 18/07/2019 17:49

I had severe toothache a few years back, dentist couldn't find anything wrong, referred me for mouth guard incase grinding when asleep, don't think I was but having the guard in when sore helped my mouth/ jaw relax which would stop the pain getting worse/ reduce it and then stop it altogether. So essentially I was tending my jaw in the day time when concentrating or stressed , so hanging my mouth open to relax was what I had to do

Thebookswereherfriends · 18/07/2019 18:01

It could be you clench your jaw in your sleep - I had agonising pain in one tooth for ages, went to the dentist, x-rays etc. Nothing wrong. One morning I woke with very painful tooth, but realised that I had woken with my jaw quite tightly clenched and where my teeth met was where this one tooth was. I now wear a tooth guard at night and it’s largely solved the problem.

Defo sinusitis I've just had this could of swore blind it was my tooth but couldn't pin point if it was too or bottom as the pain would vary. Pain was one side of my face across my cheek bone under my eye socket and was very painful. Had it for just over a week paracetamol didn't touch it but ibrofen took the pain away as it is an anti inflammatory. So glad it was that as last resort from the dentist was a root canal but he couldn't see anything on the x Ray. He suggested sinusitis and told me to see how it went before he did a unnecessary root canal. He's a fab dentist and hot Grin

My first thought was cracked tooth

IME when someone has localised toothache, sensitive to hot and cold and painful to touch but no obvious cause it is nearly always cracked tooth. You very rarely see cracked tooth, and often the crack can run under the filling and wouldn't show up on an x ray

TMJ is unlikely to be localised to a tooth, and the dentist would normally be able to tell if your muscles are tender

It could also be referred pain from sinuses but again the tooth would unlikely to be sensitive to hot/cold.

It doesn't sound massively like trigeminal to me either

The other option is occlusal trauma, so if you grind your teeth it can 'bruise the tooth sort of. It's similar to TMJ, and has similar treatment

I would go with ibuprofen and paracetemol or co-codamol alternated every 2/3hrs and go back. You could try rubbing sensodyne on the tooth or clove oil. If you find this helps them you can confirm it is tooth related but it doesn't necessarily deny it's tooth related if it doesn't help

RobinHumphries · 18/07/2019 18:39

Yep sounds to me like a cracked tooth. If you’re going back ask the dentist if they have a tooth slooth or frac finder

Lightsabre · 18/07/2019 18:40

I had neuralgia - had xrays at the dentist etc, no issue found. Went to another dentist a few days later as it was so excrutiatingly painful (I was on Tramadol - it was awful). More xrays and they found some problem with my upper incisor - had a root canal that afternoon and the relief was instant once the anaesthetic had worn off! 9 years later the tooth is still strong, has yellowed a little bit doesn't need replacing yet.

RobinHumphries · 18/07/2019 18:42

Lightsaber that does not describe neuralgia. Neuralgia is not cured by root canal

Lightsabre · 18/07/2019 18:44

Sorry should have been clearer - it was diagnosed initially as neuralgia.

misspopsicle · 18/07/2019 18:45

I have this. Started in my teeth and has turned out to be trigeminal neuralgia. Most painful thing I've ever had.

banskuwansku · 18/07/2019 18:49

I had similar once and dentist noticed that my tooth had moved a little bit and the bite wasn't right. The edge of tooth was tiny bit too high and he shaved it. The pain disappeared instantly.

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 18/07/2019 18:54

When I was getting toothache a friend asked me if the pain was worse when I stamped my foot, or if I bent over double, head to the ground.
If it flares then, it's quite likely to be sinuses rather than actual teeth.

TonTonMacoute · 18/07/2019 19:00

I have had terrible toothache caused by sinus infection. I have also had a cracked tooth, and this sounds more like it could be a crack.

Sometimes the cracks are so fine they are just not visible. Mine went undetected for two or three years, and was only discovered when a whole corner of my tooth fell off!

The dentist who patched me up (at huge cost) said that there was decay in the tooth, but that the filling could well have hidden it in an x-ray.

If you had sensitive teeth you would think that all your teeth would be equally reactive to hot and cold, not just one. However, you could try dabbing sensodyne toothpaste more thickly onto the tooth - makes your food taste shit but it can help.

I would go back and nag your dentist or, even better, try a new one.

Mishappening · 18/07/2019 19:09

It can be caused by loss of enamel which leaves tooth vulnerable to hot/cold. The advice about the sensodyne rubbed on it does work.

namechangedtohelpyou · 19/07/2019 09:49

Trying to get another appointment. Back on hold with 111. This is horrific.

OP posts:
namechangedtohelpyou · 19/07/2019 09:53

111 told me nothing they can do. Dentists are just too busy. Fucking awful

OP posts:
namechangedtohelpyou · 19/07/2019 09:55

I've got horrific tooth pain. 111 can't help. Every dentist within miles and miles is booked up. Emergency dentist booked up until next week and even then it's hard to get an appointment. Can't afford private. What am I meant to do? I can't even take decent painkillers as I'm breastfeeding.

OP posts:
Greenglassteacup · 19/07/2019 09:58

If it’s unbearable you could go to a&e and see emergency dentist?

namechangedtohelpyou · 19/07/2019 10:00

I just feel like an idiot going to a and e for toothache. They are overwhelmed as it is. It's not an emergency I'm just in a huge amount of pain. How can it be so hard to get a dentist appointment!

OP posts:
Greenglassteacup · 19/07/2019 10:03

I suppose it depends on how severe the pain is, if you are writhing in agony and unable to sleep etc I would go to a&e

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 19/07/2019 10:06

Oh you poor thing, you have my sympathy. Toothache really is a form of torture.

What about the GP? They could at least prescribe pain relief that's safe whilst breastfeeding?

namechangedtohelpyou · 19/07/2019 10:07

Getting a gp appointment is pretty much as hard as trying to get a dentist appointment. I won't get one today.

OP posts:
Greenglassteacup · 19/07/2019 10:09

Don’t you have a walk in centre?

Greenglassteacup · 19/07/2019 10:10

Where you sit and wait?
