Toothache but nothing wrong with my teeth!

Went to dentist today. Had x-rays, she spent ages looking at my teeth and gums. I've got hideous toothache. I KNOW which tooth it is coming from because it's related to me eating hot or cold food and when I touch it it hurts. She said my teeth are great. She can't see anything wrong so can't treat. Said I just have to hope it settles down.

Wtf do I do? I'm in pain but can't do anything about it.

Another one here suggesting that you might be suffering from a sinus infection.

Ash39 · 18/07/2019 15:59

If it's a bottom tooth, then it won't be sinus problems. A bottom
Tooth could be perichoronitis ( wisdom tooth flare up) or earache.
Did the dentist take any radiographs?

Dentists sometimes get it wrong. Go back and ask tone re-examined

namechangedtohelpyou · 18/07/2019 16:00

Dentist took an x-ray but said she couldn't see anythint wrong.

Can anyone recommend any pain relief I can take in the mean time that is safe whilst breastfeeding? Ibuprofen and paracetamol are doing nothing.

I'd go back and ask for a second opinion - if even just another dentist looking at the X-rays. Or go to your GP and explain about the pain and the dentist (although my Dentist does always check for Jaw health as well).
I would be worried that the Dentist had somehow missed an abscess somewhere.

Iambouddica · 18/07/2019 16:10

nerve pain? I get bad pain in my lower molars - nothing to do with my teeth but the trapped nerve in my neck...

Ruleof4 · 18/07/2019 16:11

Are you clenching your jaw at night? Also try rubbing the area above and below your jawline with a little bit of oil. It might release some tension which can cause this too.

namechangedtohelpyou · 18/07/2019 16:17

I think my dentist has missed something. I have a filling in the tooth that hurts. Only small. It's the only filling I have and it's been there for 14 years. I don't even remember getting it. I think she's missed something. I am going to go back tomorrow. Thankfully you can get an appointment if you fall at 8:30. I'm in so much pain

Go to a different dentist and get a second opinion i had this and my first dentist said i was fine, I went to a different one and he found an abscess needed antibiotics and a tooth removal!! Cost me an absolute fortune but teeth aren't worth taking chances on I'd argue it's the worst kind of pain

Stifledlife · 18/07/2019 16:21

When I had this it was because one tooth had grown out of alignment and every time I closed my teeth it hit the opposite tooth.. then I began clenching my teeth while I slept and the nerve got inflamed.

The dentist suggested I held a matchstick between my teeth (upper and lower) as I slept and it worked. It gave the nerve time to relax after the day.

I had to work on what was making me clench my teeth though!

namechangedtohelpyou · 18/07/2019 16:23

Hopefully I don't need a tooth removed. It would be visible if I smiled :(

Also low vitamin C!

ChicCroissant · 18/07/2019 16:26

I would also ask your GP about trigeminal neuralgia. Face pain that is often triggered by eating, cold/hot breeze on your face (I first noticed pain when hot water in the shower touched my cheek).

Is it just on one side of your face, up to the nose in the middle (if that makes sense!)?

Earache or TMJ disorder

tutu112 · 18/07/2019 16:45

I would try your GP too. I had something similar, convinced it was toothache. I went back to different dentists many times and had root canal work. Still had the uncomfortable/painful sensation. In the end I asked the dentist to remove the tooth entirely- I was that fed up. But still the sensation persisted. So went to GP who diagnosed trigeminal neuralgia. So there's a chance it could be that maybe.

BlankTimes · 18/07/2019 16:51

OP, Look for Neilmed Sinus Rinse at most chemists or online, try that for a good few days and see if you get any relief.

TheInebriati · 18/07/2019 16:58

You might have a cracked tooth which doesn't always show up on an x-ray.

Wintersnowdrop · 18/07/2019 17:01

When I had this it turned out to be a cracked tooth that didn’t show up on the x Ray.

BigGapMum · 18/07/2019 17:12

A few years ago, I had toothache but nothing wrong with the tooth. I went back to the dentist a few times, but she couldn't find anything wrong with it. Then one day she sat and had a good think about it, and said that there was a gum condition which gave the symptoms of toothache, although the gums seemed fine.
She sent me the hygienist, which I hadn't done before, who gave my teeth a good clean and got me flossing regularly. That seemed to fix the problem. Toothache was gone.
I still need to floss regularly as the toothache returns I miss it for a few days, which confirms in my mind she was right. Sorry, but I never found out the name of the gum condition.

Agnesf · 18/07/2019 17:16

I had this. About 3 months on my whole tooth split in half and had to be taken out. Sometimes hairline cracks are very hard to detect

AlwaysOnAbloodyDiet · 18/07/2019 17:23

I have dental pain, on and off. It was absolutely horrendous a few years ago, literally worse than labour pain.

The dentist(s) couldn't find anything wrong, X-rays were clear and teeth & gums were healthy.
she eventually suggested that I may be clenching and grinding in my sleep, and fitted something on my bottom teeth (sort of 'built' something on my bottom back molars)
Literally from that moment, I was pain free. THAt was 10 years ago, and they only very occasionally ache now.

It's worth suggesting to your dentist, if she has outruled everything else

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 18/07/2019 17:26

Sensodine toothpaste and gargle with warm salt water. I've got a painful tooth too, also nothing wrong with it.

Ps l have regular sinus massages and take ibruprofen for the pain.

Haybo26 · 18/07/2019 17:36

If it is the very early stages of an infection, it might not have shown up on the xray. However, bacteria multiply very quickly so I'd bet my wages that it would show up on another xray now that a bit of time has passed. (Speaking from experience).

Lawnmowingsucks · 18/07/2019 17:37

Neuralgia or sinuses
