To want to tell you about ice cream?

I've only just discovered that beaver anal secretions are used to flavour vanilla, strawberry and raspberry sweet treats like ice cream. Anything labelled as 'natural flavourings' could mean castoreum. Vom...

Have bought the posh stuff with vanilla in now!

CBA to click.

How do they milk the beavers?

lmusic87 · 17/07/2019 16:04

Won't put me off my Kelly's Cornish Grin

SummerHouse · 17/07/2019 16:07

I always ask for extra anal secretion sprinkles on mine. Smile

Ithinkmycatisevil · 17/07/2019 16:11

I like my ice cream with extra anal secretions.

YANBU. It’s the best bit.

SummerHouse · 17/07/2019 16:11

Their contribution to the food industry now accounts for a tiny fraction of natural vanilla flavouring and tends to be limited to luxury foods and beverages.

From the article - ‘Their contribution to the food industry now accounts for a tiny fraction of natural vanilla flavouring and tends to be limited to luxury foods and beverages.’

So you have deliberately bought the beaver flavoured ice cream? Confused

Cockw0mble · 17/07/2019 16:18

If you're happy to eat something containing milk, what's the problem with beaver secretions?

Badcat666 · 17/07/2019 16:19

Its just click bait bollocks.

Its seriously pricey stuff (about $70 a pound and even more for the humanely secreted stuff) and you can't produce it in the EU so I very much doubt its in our posh ice cream.

More than likely its in US products (or India/ China etc) as their food standards are WAY lower than ours (plus I doubt the "premium" ice cream makers would add that in their products, like UK pet food producers don't use horse meat as they know there would be a backlash from consumers)

Lifecraft · 17/07/2019 16:20

Our ice cream man was found dead in his van, covered in strawberry sauce and chopped nuts.

The police say he topped himself.

SunshineCake · 17/07/2019 16:21

Don't be ridiculous.

TescoValueUserName · 17/07/2019 16:22

What I want to know is who the hell decided to lick a beavers arsehole in order to find out that it tasted like vanilla?!

MustardScreams · 17/07/2019 16:23

If you’re worried about anal secretions why on earth are you eating dairy?! There’s much worse than that in milk.

Nothingsuitsmelikeasuit · 17/07/2019 16:24

Beaver secretions are probably the least of your problems when you think about where food starts, how it’s processed, packed, transported, stored, stocked, other shoppers, rats in the warehouse, god knows what else and that’s before we look at restaurants/takeaways/fast food places. Ignorance is bliss.

stucknoue · 17/07/2019 16:24

Except in Britain it's vegetarian so not the case

Branleuse · 17/07/2019 16:30

i like the crushed beetle ones

Interesting, just read up on Castoreum in Wikipedia.
Neat trivia, note it’s mainly used in schnapps.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 17/07/2019 16:33

How do beaver bums taste like vanilla and who discovered this (and how/why/were they arrested)?

ContactLight · 17/07/2019 16:34

What I want to know is... how did they discover that beaver anal secretions were a delicacy in the first place?

StormTreader · 17/07/2019 16:35

"Anything labelled as 'natural flavourings' could mean castoreum. Vom..."

Well, yes. It could also mean its got raspberry flavouring in it from raspberries rather than purely from lab chemicals. Or any other kind of flavouring derived from anything narural.

Going from "natural flavouring" to "definitely contains beavers" seems like rather a big jump.

Sportsnight · 17/07/2019 16:36

Someone definitely has questions to answer there.

CaptainMyCaptain · 17/07/2019 16:36

I doubt if there are enough beavers around to maintain the ice cream industry.

NorthEndGal · 17/07/2019 16:39

I'm eating a bowl of Moon Mist right now, some good!
It's banana,grape and bubblegum icecream!
