To want to tell you about ice cream?

I've only just discovered that beaver anal secretions are used to flavour vanilla, strawberry and raspberry sweet treats like ice cream. Anything labelled as 'natural flavourings' could mean castoreum. Vom...

Have bought the posh stuff with vanilla in now!

Thanks for that!

BullBullBull · 17/07/2019 16:42

That’s what makes it taste nice. Surely you knew that...

How do you know this doesn't have it in it too?

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 17/07/2019 16:48

@NorthEndGal

you can’t just drop that there and not say where you can buy this glorious confection.

OddHoleySocks · 17/07/2019 16:51

Except in Britain it's vegetarian so not the case

But they can extract it by 'milking', they don't have to kill the animal, so it might just qualify as vegetarian? If eggs and dairy are vegetarian then I can't see why this wouldn't be... Even though it feels more wrong, but that's just because we have grown up with cows being milked as normal.

There’s a reason why the Metro is a free newspaper and
it has everything to do with the quality of their journalism.

SecretNutellaFix · 17/07/2019 16:53

The chances of anyone in the UK being exposed to castoreum is incredibly low given that the annual worldwide consumption of the substance is 300 lb.

I'll take my chances and still enjoy ice cream.

NorthEndGal · 17/07/2019 16:54

@exWifebeginsat40 it's a local ice cream flavour here in Nova Scotia, made by Scottsburn
Absolutely amazing stuff

Absolutely. My homemade ice cream is delicious. I save money by using my husband’s anal secretions which are nearly as tasty as a beaver’s.

CalamBalam · 17/07/2019 16:57

Lot more expensive (and hazardous) to milk a beaver's anal gland than to use synthetic flavourings. In fact it may well become the next trend in artisan ice-cream production, 'ice-cream made with real beaver secretions.'

I like actual beaver anus on my ice cream. It’s also quite good for holding my ice cream cone steady.

isitwhatitis · 17/07/2019 17:13

OP you'll get frozen out of the thread if you persist with this nonsense.

merrymouse · 17/07/2019 17:14

www.snopes.com/fact-check/castoreum/

Seems unlikely that much castoreum reaches the UK, particularly enough to flavour ice cream.

Rachelover40 · 17/07/2019 17:17

Just goes to show that there is a use for everything.

I expect the beavers' anal secretions are sterilised - hopefully not while they are still on the beavers.

I've made ice cream in the past and sometimes flavoured it with cooked fruit. I wonder if my anal secretions would enhance the recipe? Not those of my husband of course, his definitely wouldn't.

PenguinWings · 17/07/2019 17:18

There's no way that it's cheaper to raise and milk Beavers than it is to synthesize vanilla flavour or even grow vanilla pods.

I didn't expect to be typing that today.

OhDear2200 · 17/07/2019 17:24

Is it to early to say ‘classics’?

DuckbilledSplatterPuff · 17/07/2019 17:32

And I thought news about Donald Trump was depressing. This post could be a good dietry aid though.

@WarmestRegards

Dog arse milk is definitely how they make (B)um and Raisin flavour - the official worst ice cream ever 🤢

fourquenelles · 17/07/2019 17:46

Do you ever wonder who the first person to milk a beaver's arse was and why they decided to do it? Confused

Abra1de · 17/07/2019 17:52

*If you’re worried about anal secretions why on earth are you eating dairy?! There’s much worse than that ‘

Says who?

CalamBalam · 17/07/2019 17:55

I think musk used in high end perfumes comes from the anal gland of a deer. There's been a lot of poking around in animal's bottoms in the name of smells and flavours!

Elementalillusions · 17/07/2019 18:02

If you're happy to eat something containing milk, what's the problem with beaver secretions?

100% this.

Why is one animal secretion any different to another?
