Washing knickers and tea towels together

Who REALLY separates their undies from towels in the wash Hmm am I and everyone I know grubby ?! I feel this is a waste of water, electricity, time and money!

www.facebook.com/ThisMorning/videos/397975490837957?s=524614358&v=e&sfns=mo

(Video is Lynsey on This Morning telling us we should make sure our bras are clipped together and separate them from towels before we wash) I wanna know how she has the time.

So I've watched the video...she makes the point that you shouldn't wash pants and tea towels together because of the "poo particles" getting transferred to your tea towels, and in turn your mugs etc...

So now I'm just sat here thinking, is it really that common for a fully grown woman to routinely have poo on their knickers?!

I don't own any tea towels so at least I don't have to worrry about it!

ParadiseLaundry · 16/07/2019 16:48

I do find it grim to wash them together. I cringe when I see my neighbour hang her tea towels on the line with her underwear.

I have a box in the utility room cupboard which I put dirty (dry) tea towels into and then wash them all together on a 60 wash. I have one for microfibre cloths too as they can't be washed using fabric conditioner.

chesterfuckingdraws · 16/07/2019 16:48

I know it's totally irrational but I'd never wash underwear with tea towels.
I fully understand that the whole point of a washing machine is that the things you put in come out clean but I just can't bring myself to mix the washing to that level!
Towels get washed on a boil wash as does bedding. Work uniforms get washed separately from non uniform clothes as does gym clothes and I can't bring myself to wash ANYTHING with DH super sweaty gym stuff and everything else gets split, light, dark, colours.

PawPawNoodle · 16/07/2019 16:49

Definitely different washes in the Noodle household. Towels go in at 60 with no fabric conditioner (affects their absorbency). Knickers go in with normal 30 wash and bathe in the silky delights of a bit of Lenor.

Hmm, I wash poo filled nappies in my machine!

Why are these hypothetical poo particles worse on tea towels than say, the sleeves of your clothe or the collars of shirts that get pulled over your head. Bizarre.

Rachelover40 · 16/07/2019 16:50

As long as the water is hot I don't see that it matters if you wash knickers and tea towels together.

I probably do wash them together sometimes but never thought about it;
I separate my wash into whites (or things nearly white, eg cream or very pale), lights, darks, hot wash, not so hot wash. At the moment I'm washing hand and bath towels and a couple of bath mats on 60deg. A pair of knickers is in there with them (but I accept towels are not the same as tea towels).

bengalcat · 16/07/2019 16:50

Tea towels , towels , dogs towel , underwear , mixing of colours - all gets periodically shoved in together in our house .

CremeEggThief · 16/07/2019 16:52

Towels
Bedding
Cleaning cloths/mop head/ bath mat
Whites
Everything else

StillCoughingandLaughing · 16/07/2019 16:53

I've never washed tea towels with knickers, but purely because I tend to do a towel wash and would have a full machine with that. Maybe I’m dirty for washing tea towels with bath towels!

Celebelly · 16/07/2019 16:54

Our washing machine must be full of poo particles as I wash nappies in it.

I don't have the time or inclination to unnecessarily faff about with separating stuff. It all gets chucked in together.

BishopofBathandWells · 16/07/2019 16:57

Towels and tea towels go together. 100% of my underwear is black or navy blue so that goes on a dark wash with jeans etc. I don't think it's an ick thing on my part, just a grouping thing IYSWIM?

SmartPlay · 16/07/2019 16:58

I usually wash them separately, but not because I find it gross or anything (like many people said: it all comes out clean anyway), but because I normally wash my towels at 60° and clothes at 40°.

Alsohuman · 16/07/2019 16:59

Tea towels and knickers together? I’m a self confessed slattern but no, couldn’t do it.

Pinkcat231 · 16/07/2019 16:59

I’d love to know if anyone’s actually tested a washed tea towel for ‘poo particles’ after washing with underwear Hmm and if your underwear isn’t clean when it comes out, do you then have to clean your machine before washing anymore towels?!

SleepingStandingUp · 16/07/2019 17:00

Tea towels generally in with other towels but will go in with general wash if only a few and not too dirty, otherwise it's simply cos thry go on a hotter setting.

By this logic should we wash each person's knickers seperatly so no one gets cross contamination of poo?

Lweji · 16/07/2019 17:01

I put all the white cotton items together. Whatever they are.

I don't have many white knickers, though. So, most of them are washed with other clothes.

Clipping bras together is a good idea and worth it if you have expensive bras. An even better idea is to wash them by hand.

Lweji · 16/07/2019 17:02

What is a poo particle?

MyHeadIsBursting · 16/07/2019 17:02

Undies, socks and all towels go in together at 60 and then straight into the tumble dryer. Clothes separated by lights/darks and washed at 30 and dried either on the whirlybird my pulley.

Bwekfusth · 16/07/2019 17:02

Saw this on facefuck this morning, I have been spreading shit particles all over my tea towels for years. None of us are dead.

Megan2018 · 16/07/2019 17:03

We have huge towels so a towel load is enough on its own.

Every week I have:
2 loads of superking bedding
1 load of towels (bath and kitchen)
1 load of ecloths and mop heads used for all the cleaning jobs
1 load of pet related items
2-3 loads of clothes

i do them all on different days though - its not a deliberate thing to split them by type, it's just the way it works. The tea towels go in with the towels or ecloths depending.

Heatherjayne1972 · 16/07/2019 17:03

I’m a sorter
Pants and socks on a hot wash
Whites at 30
Darks at 30
Towels tea towels and flannels on a hot wash

Everything else at 30

Doesnt take long to sort with a system

ravenmum · 16/07/2019 17:03

Well if you wash your towels and your knickers separately, but in the same machine, then surely you'd also run the same imaginary risk of transferring particles, wouldn't you? Or do you have to do some sort of boil wash on empty in between?

ginghamtablecloths · 16/07/2019 17:03

I wash bras and pants in a launder-net bag (bras fastened to prevent damage, then undone to dry) and paired socks go in a smaller separate bag. All added in a load with the rest - t-shirts, dresses, etc.

When I wash the bedding (fortnightly) I add towels, flannels and tea towels.

It hasn't killed me yet.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 16/07/2019 17:05

Tes towels and dish cloths get s separate hot wash when the bucket is full. Other stuff get colour separated. Some stuff gets a delicate wash.

I'm shocked at the slack laundry ways...

Shodan · 16/07/2019 17:05

Tea towels get chucked on the floor in front of the machine and go in with whatever wash is next on and think themselves lucky.

But then I haven't had visible poo particles on my knickers since I was old enough to wipe my own butt, so don't worry about that. Pus I bath or shower my nether regions every day.

But I guess if you can't wipe your bum properly and/or are a stranger to the cleansing power of a nice shower, then you should probably separate your smalls from your tea towels.
