Sorry, shameful aibu post for traffic. But just got home from yet another horrendous camping weekend.

Our last 3 camping trips have been ruined by god awful campsites and locations.

I'm very close to giving up on this whole camping malarkey, but DH and DS would hate me. And we can't afford 'proper' holidays anyway so it would just mean no holidays if I refused to do it anymore.

Are there any campers on MN who can share with me their favourite UK campsites, and what they like about it?

Glanllyn, Bala.
Lovely lakeside location, family friendly, good clean facilities, super base to explore the rest of Snowdonia.

Mammajay · 14/07/2019 17:11

Sandy Balls, new forest area

dreichhighlands · 14/07/2019 17:13

What kind of campsite and locations are you looking for OP?

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 14/07/2019 17:13

Where have you been? What don’t you like about them? Very hard to suggest things when you don’t say what you’re looking for.

We go to a very busy and popular place but love the simplicity of it and the views make up for the extra noise and queues for things.

Shel Island Wales

ShinyMe · 14/07/2019 17:14

What was it that was so wrong with the ones you didn't like? That helps us know what you're looking for.

I really want to go here:

Shell* really lovely, huge, sandy beaches, don’t have to camp near other people, can have fires and there is a restaurant/bar for rainy days etc on site

PookieK · 14/07/2019 17:16

Fforest Fields in Builth Wells is a gorgeous campsite. Sparkling clean facilities, walks in all directions, loads of space so never feels crowded even when busy and a lake for the kids to swim in. Proper back to basics nature and an abundance of red kites overhead. Lovely shop there with pastries and cold beer/wine as well. I’m not a very seasoned camper but I do love it there. 😁

Let us know the problem op. My gs's have just returned from camping somewhere in the main Lakes area, whilst beautiful, was very basic, overcrowded and noisy, my idea of hell. They absolutely loved it and and want to return.

The western lakes have some lovely ones Eskdale etc but bear in mind it is very rainy up there with limited shops etc. Or even Ulpha, really beautiful, but again remote. Avoids the main Lake District crowds.

Finfintytint · 14/07/2019 17:18

Yes yes to Shell Island, Fforest Fields and also Blackrock Sands.

Drpeppered · 14/07/2019 17:23

Waterside house campsite in Ullswater Lake District. Absolutely stunning location, right on the lake

lyralalala · 14/07/2019 17:29

For busy facilities for the kids (haven park) Perran Sands in Cornwall.

For a silent getaway Glenmore on the shore of Loch Morlich in the highlands

Madvixen · 14/07/2019 17:34

Gorsebank in Dumfries and Galloway
The Hideaway at Baxby Manor in North Yorkshire

Can you afford ferry or Eurotunnel We go to a nice site just near Calais & it's an extra £100 for ferry.

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 14/07/2019 17:38

I’m currently completely blissed out at Loch Ness Shores near Inverness

Celebelly · 14/07/2019 17:40

Loch Ness Shores is lovely, such an amazing location. Can be bad for midgies at certain times of year though. DP got eaten alive when we were there!

"converse* can you name the site near Calais? Looking for something within an hour or two of Calais for just me and one dc for a few nights.... thank you.

We went here for many years with young kids - we ended up with several of our friends and their kids joining us for a few years too. So much to do and the campsite is lovely. The cost of the country park is included (you enter through a back entrance anyway) and you can go in there when it is shut to the public.

ScrambledToe · 14/07/2019 17:45

What don’t you like?

I love camping but hate people! Grin

I know some very basic, cheap and quiet sites but they’re becoming harder to find!

Wild camping is the best!

Fridaysgirl · 14/07/2019 17:45

Yep Three Cliffs Bay
