Sorry, shameful aibu post for traffic. But just got home from yet another horrendous camping weekend.

Our last 3 camping trips have been ruined by god awful campsites and locations.

I'm very close to giving up on this whole camping malarkey, but DH and DS would hate me. And we can't afford 'proper' holidays anyway so it would just mean no holidays if I refused to do it anymore.

Are there any campers on MN who can share with me their favourite UK campsites, and what they like about it?

naming = booking

AnyFucker
Send DH and DS without you
Have a lovely peaceful few days at home by yourself

Love your idea, and have already pitched it to DH. But he got all hurt and upset that I wouldn't want to spend quality family time together.

Damn my heart strings!

River Dart Country Park is great. We’ve been every year for decades and always had an amazing time.

Other places we’ve camped in Devon have been Crealy and Woodlands. Both nice sites but massive, packed in and always some prick that thinks it’s fine to play music until early morning. Never managed more than one night at either due to none of us being able to sleep.

I’m a wimp though and never drive more than an hour away from home in case it’s too awful.

Masons campsite in North Yorkshire. We've not been for a few years but it was a real favourite.

Its on a river with rope swing. There are a couple of nice pubs in walking distance. It's close to Bolton Abbey for river stepping stones and a steam railway and also Skipton which has a Castle and Market.

whiteroseredrose · 14/07/2019 20:37

Eskdale campsite in the Lake District. Really nice shower block, walks right from the campsite and again a nice pub and a steam train. (a bit of a theme here!)

TheoryOfADeadman · 14/07/2019 20:40

If you have kids I'd recommend Blue Skies Campsite in Wells-Next-to-the-Sea.
If you don't have kids (adult only site) and enjoy the countryside/walking I'd recommend Greenway Touring and Glamping site in Shropshire.

AnyFucker · 14/07/2019 20:50

Fuck the heart strings. Camping is shit.

WellGoshDarnIt · 14/07/2019 20:50

Dorset! We go every year for a weekend with friends and the kids absolutely love it. Head for the area around Corfe Castle - lots of good sites around there. We are staying at Woodyhyde for the second year - quite busy but nice and clean. Tons to do locally - beaches, walking, explore the castle, pop into Bournemouth, go to Dorset water park. Lots of nice pubs. Oh, and the steam train runs along the back of the site, and you can catch it to go into Swanage. Last couple of years there's been loads of entertainment there in the evenings. Oh, and crabbing at Sandbanks!

There are some great suggestions on here- have been to many.

I would also suggest River Dart with the age of your DS it would be perfect. It's quite a big site, but we stayed twice and never had a problem with noise, although I would choose a pitch wisely here. I's expensive in comparison with other sites and quickly booked up, I am sure I booked November for one of the last electric pitches in May half term. There's a lot to see around the area.

We have also stayed at Cotswold View in Charlbury- farm, playground and skittles on site, cafe and a good base for attractions such as Oxford, Blenheim palace, Warwick castle etc.

Duinrell in The Netherlands- free theme park on site (and water park, if you book early you get free access to that as well). Well placed for day trips out- again expensive but very much worth it. Can be a bit noisy.

The Quiet site is good, a bit of a dog leg to get to places to visit. Bathrooms were good, they even had baths!

The Hideaway has fantastic bathrooms and a good vibe, it's near York and Pickering, Scarborough, Knaresborough, Harrogate etc.

We stayed at Upwood Park near Haworth this year, that has a playground and football field, and pub on site. Bathrooms were excellent. It has quite a few seasonal caravans. Quite a bit to do in the area.

FForest fields is lovely, but there is no playground (which I prefer), but if your DS likes riding a bike, swimming or canoeing in a lake, and exploring then it is ace- if he makes friends easily he should be able to there. There's not as much to do in the immediate area, but if you're happy to travel about an hour there are more attractions.

Second (or third?) vote for Eskdale campsite. Lovely shower block, good for the kids, lots of interesting things to do close by.

Doje · 14/07/2019 20:57

And an AMAZING drying room! (which we used a lot...)

BathshebaKnickerStickers · 14/07/2019 20:59

I also adore the Camping and Caravan Club site at Folkestone. It’s beautiful.

Also the Camping and Caravan Club site at Kingsbury Water Park in the midlands is a favourite of ours

converseandjeans · 14/07/2019 22:03

River Dart & Woodlands are both great with lots to do.
Duinrell in Holland is amazing but obviously further afield.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 14/07/2019 22:09

We love Duinrell too - been twice now. Fantastic place that the kids absolutely loved but I wouldn't take my tent as the camping area seemed very noisy. We were in Eurocamo accommodation in a quieter section of the park and we could here the campers partying into the early hours!

zebrapig · 14/07/2019 22:18

All my favourites have been mentioned!

Gwithian Farm
Fforest Fields
Glanllyn in Bala
Shell Island
Kingsbury Water Park - can hear the motorway but worth it as there's loads to do

Masons is on my to visit list as well as Fron Farm.

Bonkersblond · 14/07/2019 22:29

I was coming on here to say Dorset and recommend Woodyhyde but WellGoshDarnit beat me to it.

imnewherethisisme · 14/07/2019 22:31

Burnbake campsite by corfe is lovely. It's a turn up & pitch one so you do run the risk of it being busy & not having space so depends when you're going.
It's a pretty basic campsite with very nice clean facilities & fire pit hire. Lots of lovely walks & things to do in the area. Dorset water park is close and they have a mud trail there as well, Swanage with the railway & steam train, adventure sports & water sports are right next to the campsite.
We had a great time a few weeks ago and would definitely go back!

Amazing place

chockaholic72 · 14/07/2019 23:04

beaconfarmicecream.co.uk/camping/

We stayed here a couple of weeks ago. Great views of the Abbey, and only a couple of miles outside Whitby. Great pub with delicious food at the end of the lane, and the farm makes the most incredible ice cream.

PoppingOneOutIn2020 · 14/07/2019 23:07

Water mouth campsite in ilfracombe. It has amazing views of the sea and a little private beach. Just had all new renovated toilet blocks and is such a lively place with a lovely atmosphere. Close to the town and not farm from woolacombe for woolacombe beach x

aibutohavethisusername · 15/07/2019 01:21

I’d also recommend Cotswolds View.

Our favourite is Hendra Holiday Park in Cornwall.

Someone mentioned Sandy Balls but they don’t do camping there any more.
