To believe this is racist?

Bought a teapot on ebay, arrived with an old break very obvious so asked to return. After several abusive emails this was the last one I received after seller had to refund me.

You know what?
Keep the junk as you describe it. I don’t want it back. In my views it’s been contaminated with Englishness. I’m only selling things because I’m leaving this hate filled country, anyway.
My experience with you was another interesting example why this stupid country should not be part of a civilised community of countries. Never do business with the English. Too right, I’m afraid to say.
Enjoy a nice English tea time on me.
I can’t wait to go back to my home country.

People will only say something if they can get away with it. There are no consequences for being racist (defined upthread as racist) towards English people, especially if they are white. People laugh it off, don't do anything about it.

I'm pretty chilled out about most stuff. However, having lived in 4 other countries I have been exposed to racism as a white and English person. Its not acceptable to me. Anyone who talks to me like that online or face to face is going to get ripped a new arsehole.

SagAloojah · 11/07/2019 14:25

Just pisses me off. If I sent this with English replaced with some other country I would be hauled into court!

No you wouldn’t. 🙄

Aquiver · 11/07/2019 14:25

Weird response, but did you describe the item as "junk"? That is quite inflammatory.

MyKingdomForACaramel · 11/07/2019 14:31

I assume they were selling their old teapot to cast away the terrible “Britishness” of it.

Not racism and tbh I would imagine that someone selling an old teapot with a crack in it and then sending business messages is likely to be somewhat unwell

DoneLikeAKipper · 11/07/2019 14:57

People laugh it off, don't do anything about it.

Gosh, I wonder why people wouldn’t take a ‘racist’ verbal attack against a white English person seriously. Poor people, so oppressed, we should make others more aware of this issue. Maybe a ‘white English history month’ or something, really educate and talk about this issue.

RosesAndRaindrops · 11/07/2019 15:05

There's a difference between being racist towards a white person though, as in we don't have any oppression for example, surely you can see that Tibetan?
I mean if someone called me white trash or whatever, it'd be more like a joke and an "Ooookay" moment lol.
It wouldn't be hurled at you in an abuse manner day in day out as an insult, would it....

Aj63 · 11/07/2019 15:14

Clearly a racial slur
I personally am mortally offended that all English people are being abused.
If the ebay seller has experienced bigotry that is hateful but why visit that on the 0P and rest of nation?

ineedtostopbeingsolazy · 11/07/2019 15:24

You don't need to ask a seller if you can return things. Open a return case upload the photos, download the label they pay for if it's faulty/NAD and send it back.
If someone is being abusive report them. You don't need to get into dialogue with people.
I know that's not your question but thought I'd mention it.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 11/07/2019 15:48

I would sent their tea pot back to them anyway.

Patte · 11/07/2019 17:19

According to this article (admittedly old) you can indeed be prosecuted for racism towards the English, or the Welsh. www.google.co.uk/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2013/may/05/david-mitchell-racism-insults-wales

LordScamperdale · 11/07/2019 17:28

BertrandRussell · 11/07/2019 17:38

“English isn't a race

What’s your problem?

DoneLikeAKipper · 11/07/2019 19:16

@LordScamperdale are you ok hun, is this brand new information for you or something Grin.

IncandescentShadow · 11/07/2019 19:35

English isn't a race. Hth

For the love of god, the Equality Act doesn't distinguish between race and nationality. How on earth do you think that would work?

Here is the civil definition of the protected characteristic of race from the Equalities Commission:

"Refers to the protected characteristic of race. It refers to a group of people defined by their race, colour, and nationality (including citizenship) ethnic or national origins."

Here is the definition from the Crime and Disorder Act 1988:

"In this section “racial group” means a group of persons defined by reference to race, colour, nationality (including citizenship) or ethnic or national origins."

Yes, OP, it is racist, and possibly also an aggravated offence.

popehilarious · 11/07/2019 23:10

So... English is a race?

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 11/07/2019 23:17

If English isn't a race, is American, African, Chinese, Pakistani, Russian, Japanese?

If someone said,
"I hate doing business with those cheap Chinese people"
Would that be racist?

BAYouTFall · 11/07/2019 23:21

What’s black got to do with this ? I thought the seller was talking about English people and not skin colour.

Rolls eyes

BAYouTFall · 11/07/2019 23:22

How does the seller know your ‘white ‘trash’?

powershowerforanhour · 11/07/2019 23:25

I'd be tempted to email 'em back in Welsh.

bingbongnoise · 11/07/2019 23:26

@Bottletopsx Let's see a printscreen of this alleged conversation then..........

popehilarious · 11/07/2019 23:28

"nationality (including citizenship) ethnic"
If that really is one definition then I can't really parse it. I'm sure someone cleverer than me will be able to tell me what it means though!

Interesting that one definition says "race, colour AND nationality ethnic" etc , implying a combination of factors forming the definition; and the other says "race, colour, nationality OR ethnic/national origins" implying only one factor is sufficient to define as 'race'.

donquixotedelamancha · 12/07/2019 00:14

English isn't a race

Nothing is a race. Race theory has no validity, so race really only exists in the context of 'what groups do dickheads pick on?'

IncandescentShadow · 12/07/2019 00:25

So... English is a race?

No. English is a nationality. Nationality is defined as falling within one of the protected characteristics.

Interesting that one definition says "race, colour AND nationality ethnic" etc , implying a combination of factors forming the definition; and the other says "race, colour, nationality OR ethnic/national origins" implying only one factor is sufficient to define as 'race'.

Because the definition I gave is from a description of the definition in the Equality Act, and the second is taken directly from the legislation.

Why on earth doesn't anyone look up the actual definitions in the legislation if they don't understand this? Easily found on the internet.

Civil definition, from the Equality Act-

www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2010/15/section/9

Note the part at the top which says "race is defined as colour; nationality; ethnic or national origins".

Criminal - www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1998/37/part/II/crossheading/raciallyaggravated-offences-england-and-wales

I really have never come across so many people that don't understand this. Do you really imagine that French people are a different "race" from British and therefore can be discriminated against, or that French people and British people are the same race and that French people can't be discriminated against in Britain? How would that work? Do you imagine that the courts are full of professors of eugenics? Where is the logic?

There have been cases where English people have been racially harassed in the UK. Please don't ask me to look them up, I can't bear any more of this!

ImABeanBanana · 12/07/2019 00:39

#GammonComeInAllShapesAndSizes

Grin That's hilarious!

No, I don't think it's racist. This is someone slightly unhinged.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 12/07/2019 00:49

My first thought wasn’t racist but batshit...

However, as a fellow Welsh person I do understand that being called English can be quite harrowing (I suggest rewatching this year’s 6 nations match to recover Wink)
