AIBU to be sitting, at 35 weeks pregnant, sobbing on my sofa instead of going to a mums to be coffee morning as my newly stained flooring looks so terrible I can't stand to look at it

I had some wooden flooring put in our newly built front extension which I planned to be an entry space with coat rack and shoe baskets etc.
I chose oak flooring and bought a child and environment friendly lightest possible wood stain. I've tried to include a picture showing the resulting the stain after being applied yesterday along with sample colours and a piece of wood showing how it was originally - it's supposed to be the 'American' colour in the sample picture.

Every time I look at it I want to cry. It looks so awful it sickens me and I hate it. I don't even want to go in there, which is ridiculous as it's our front entry to the house I was supposed to go to a coffee morning with some other mums shortly, but I know I will just get upset and look a mess if I try and go out.

I'm going to go and have the second coffee I was saving to have when I went out along with some chocolate in a poor attempt to try and feel slightly better

Half of my house is like that, so I genuinely love it.

YANBU to let yourself cry if you feel like it in the privacy of your house.
Once you have had a good cry, see how things can be improved. Who stained the wood? Did they use the right product?
Can wood be sanded and re-stained?

YANBU to be upset because you had something else in mind.

RunningFeisty · 10/07/2019 13:37

YABU to be drinking so much coffee, unless its decaf
YABU about the floor aswell.

Knittedfairies · 10/07/2019 13:52

It looks fine to me; warm and welcoming.

Dec2019mumtobe · 10/07/2019 13:52

@RunningFeisty why is she being unreasonable about the coffee? NHS says two cups of instant coffee per day are fine in pregnancy.

It’s absolutely gorgeous, I would pin that on Pinterest immediately. It’s the batshit hormones & you’re probably over tired.

notangelinajolie · 10/07/2019 13:59

I'm going against the majority opinion on here but I have good reason. It is the same colour as my floor and I hate mine too. It could be worse though - I had the whole of my downstairs done, kitchen, hall - the lot. I have tried to like it but all I see is a sea of yellow Sad

If you can change it without it being too much faff then I would give it a go. I'm stuck with mine as DP and the rest of the jolie household like it and he flat out refuses to change it.

Good luck Flowers

historysock · 10/07/2019 14:12

I love it OP. It's Much Nicer than the lighter one and will wear better.
Plus it's just the hallway.... shut the door and you won't see it....

I will send you pictures of our raggedy old carpet on the stairs if you like-can't afford to change it (plus I fear it's the only thing keeping our very old stairs up!). That makes me cry and I'm not even pregnant Grin.

Once the baby is here you won't be worried about your floor anyway, I promise Smile

BeetrootBonanza · 10/07/2019 14:16

For those fussing about coffee, I have at most two cups a day and often less, as someone else has pointed out this is fine according to the NHS as long as a daily caffeine limit of 200mg is followed. I have checked all food and drink recommendations and limited coffee is a small pleasure I am not giving up when so many other foods and drink restrictions (which I have carefully followed) are advised. I don’t want this to devolve in to disagreement so no more comments about coffee please.

For my disaster of a floor - apologies to anyone who likes theirs dark, I do when it fits with the rest of the decor but it wasn’t planned for the room or rest of the house to have any flooring this dark, hence the disappointment!
I sent an email to the manufacturer and they had their technical manager call me a bit earlier. They explained the type of finish (oil), obviously that a test sample should have been done first (lesson very much learned!!) and that it should hopefully be able to be sanded back to bare wood and then re-finished. Fingers crossed it is doable and can eventually turn out like I’d hoped!

it is beautiful, but upsetting if it is not what you want and you are disappointed.

good luck with getting it like you want.

Trumpleton · 10/07/2019 14:58

Due to a fault with a sample we got the wrong colour tiles in our bathroom and I hated it!! Could barely look when going in there, just reminded of my mistake and what a waste of money and eugh! Other ppl think it's nice. 3 years later I don't really care but hope you get your floor changed! It's upsetting when you've planned something and it turns out wrong!

LittleLongDog · 10/07/2019 15:08

@Singlenotsingle I’m confused - what do you mean?

0blio · 10/07/2019 15:19

I dont know what @Singlenotsingle means either, the floor looks fine to me. I don't have any wood floors in my house though.
OP, I think the colour is gorgeous - wood is a natural material and it will never look exactly as the sample. But as you're upset by it hope you get it sorted to your liking or grow to love it.

Topseyt · 10/07/2019 15:19

I like it, personally. You don't though and that's what matters. It can be sanded down and tried again.

I well remember those pregnancy hormones though. When I was expecting DD3 many years ago DH took it into his head to paint the garden shed pink ( for reasons best known to himself). I took one look at it and burst into tears. I was even more distraught when I saw that the cat had brushed against it and also plodded through the paint tray, so I had a nearly pink cat too, when he was supposed to be a ginger tabby.

I look back on it and laugh now, but it really seemed like a dreadful disaster at the time.

altiara · 10/07/2019 15:27

I think it looks a lovely colour.
Hope you went to your coffee morning so at least had some time away from it.

Nettleskeins · 10/07/2019 15:31

It is very nice. I once had some creamy glazed brick shaped tiles put in the kitchen which were slightly crazed with a band of red tiles running through (meant to be that way). I took against them completely. I even discussed with Dh whether we should take them out as they were "so wrong" with the style of the kitchen. It is now my favourite favourite part of the kitchen. I think it is just when something is New it feels very very alien.

To cheer you up, I had our pine floor restained a cherry colour (cherry wood rather than red I mean) so a warm wood colour. Several years ago. I said to the builder it wasn't what I meant at all. I HATED it when it was down. Now I don't notice it except to admire it..at the time I wished it was the colour you had done yours..!

Ticklemeelmo · 10/07/2019 15:45

I like the colour actually, floor just looks a bit badly laid- from the photo at least

Avigeth · 10/07/2019 15:46

It looks lovely now and it will look even better when the colour fades away. Most stains look much darker for the first couple of days anyway. Cheer up and maybe pretend it's not there for a day or two Wink

Sashkin · 10/07/2019 17:35

If it’s literally just been done YABU because it will change as it cures - ours looked bright orange when it was first done, and cured to a lovely dark brown (which is what we wanted).

Give it a month or two, and if you still hate it get it resanded when DC is six months old or so, and you can take him out of the house for the day.

Read the comments on here OP it will make you feel better.

drizzleinbrizzle · 10/07/2019 18:39

When I was 6 months pregnant I remember sobbing for hours because I could not find a suitable blind for the downstairs loo. The baby would not even be going in there for a couple of years but I felt I could not bring my baby home to the house without the blinds sorted. It was utterly bonkers but I think hormones when you are pregnant just cannot be reasoned with! YABU but YANBU at the same time!

MinistryOfTragic · 10/07/2019 19:39

I think it looks lovely too OP. I'm sure your hormones aren't helping you at the moment. I cried over the pigeons at the train station having toes missing when I was as pregnant as you. Take a breath, get your chocolate and I'm sure it won't be long until you're feeling a bit better. Flowers

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 10/07/2019 19:45

Not helpful op but I think it’s looks lovely! But if you hate it needs to change. Is it worth leaving it for a few weeks to see if it grows on you?

abitfedup · 10/07/2019 19:53

@BeetrootBonanza

It's lovely and it will grow on you. Smile

Wasywasydoodah · 10/07/2019 19:55

I had a meltdown over how my DH chopped cherry tomatoes wrong when I was pregnant. Seems bonkers now...

Howmuchisthatdoggie · 10/07/2019 20:19

Its a floor get some perspective. I'm 35 weeks my husband just got made redundant and our landlord just gave us two months notice to find somewhere else to live. Pull your head out of your ass and give it a wobble
