AIBU to be sitting, at 35 weeks pregnant, sobbing on my sofa instead of going to a mums to be coffee morning as my newly stained flooring looks so terrible I can't stand to look at it

I had some wooden flooring put in our newly built front extension which I planned to be an entry space with coat rack and shoe baskets etc.
I chose oak flooring and bought a child and environment friendly lightest possible wood stain. I've tried to include a picture showing the resulting the stain after being applied yesterday along with sample colours and a piece of wood showing how it was originally - it's supposed to be the 'American' colour in the sample picture.

Every time I look at it I want to cry. It looks so awful it sickens me and I hate it. I don't even want to go in there, which is ridiculous as it's our front entry to the house I was supposed to go to a coffee morning with some other mums shortly, but I know I will just get upset and look a mess if I try and go out.

I'm going to go and have the second coffee I was saving to have when I went out along with some chocolate in a poor attempt to try and feel slightly better

I know it’s not what you wanted but I think the colour is beautiful OP! And if it was only done yesterday then I promise you it will lighten up, it really will, fluorescent and UV light will fade it.
Do something to cheer yourself up Flowers

Singlenotsingle · 10/07/2019 10:47

Who laid the flooring? They haven't been very careful in selecting which boards to put next to each other, have they? My bathroom floor looks like that. Sad

LoisLanyard · 10/07/2019 10:49

For what it is worth I think it looks lovely. It will fade slightly in time, and mellow. And with darker coloured wood, it will hide the inevitable marks and stains that kids create far better than a lighter floor.

BertrandRussell · 10/07/2019 10:50

Did whoever did it use the right stain?
I think it looks nice, by the way. And you will get used to it!

BlackInk · 10/07/2019 10:50

I think the colour looks fine, but if you hate it it looks like a small area so you could strip the varnish back off and do it again in a lighter colour. I think it will look much better when the gap in the doorway and underneath the doormat have been tidied up - what are you planning there?

Sassypants82 · 10/07/2019 10:53

I love it! Contrasts beautifully with the units. Sorry you're upset.

Nesssie · 10/07/2019 10:53

Its a shock because its so different. Its not horrible at all, its just a big change from what you had and what you expected.

Have you contacted the person that did it?

2littleninjas · 10/07/2019 10:56

I think it looks lovely

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 10/07/2019 10:59

I don't think it looks horrible, just different to how you were imagining it. I think it will lighten over time, and it is much better for it to be stained than not.

Are you having a set-in piece of doormat? We have one and it's absolutely brilliant, so if you are, good choice!

At 35 weeks pregnant I don't think you can really be unreasonable, but you probably are feeling a bit tired and hormonal on top of how you'd usually feel. Flowers

MRex · 10/07/2019 11:00

Leave it a few weeks to see if you want to live with it because it does look ok. If not, DH dripped turps up our newly lacquered flooring and it took the lacquer off, I expect it would do the same to yours so you could have it cleaned off and redone. I'm presuming it's lacquer not oil as it's an entry hall? I admit that I prefer our lighter version, I can look up the name of the lacquer we used if you want.

Anyway, nothing you can do right now so you may as well go for that coffee!

BrienneofTarthILoveYou · 10/07/2019 11:01

It's lovely Op but I would have reacted like you have when pregnant. In a day or so you'll feel differently and likely will really like it in a few weeks.

Meangirls36 · 10/07/2019 11:01

Honestly that's the best bit! Also hormones! Eat something amazing and have a nap then do it again. With some trash comfort telly

drinkygin · 10/07/2019 11:02

Sorry but yes YABU. This is such a first world problem. If you hate it that much change it.

Blahblahblahnanana · 10/07/2019 11:04

It looks really nice and classy, the lighter colour tends to go yellowish in time and look dirty.

Spudlet · 10/07/2019 11:06

Ah yes, I remember getting hysterical over a bath panel when I was pregnant. DH says it is the only time he has ever see me completely and utterly irrational...

Leave it a little while and see how you feel about it - ideally wait until your baby is here and your hormones have settled down before making any firm decisions. Pregnant ladies are not in a good place for flooring decisions [casts baleful look at kitchen floor, chosen when I was pregnant...]

Peridot1 · 10/07/2019 11:07

I really like the colour. It’s a lovely warm honey colour. BUT it doesn’t look like what you picked. That could be for a few reasons. Happened to some neighbours of ours with big solid wooden gates. Went much much darker than expected. We got gates made from the same guy and they used a different stain for ours which went the colour it was supposed to.

With yours I really like the contrast against the white. But if you don’t like it tell whoever did it. Show them the sample again.

It will fade. Our wooden floor has faded around a mat and it’s very obvious when we move the mat.

ChocChocButtons · 10/07/2019 11:09

I think it looks really nice. I know it’s bloody frustrating tho when you want something a certain colour etc and it doesn’t look exactly as you imagined it.

Summertimeatthebeach · 10/07/2019 11:10

At 35 weeks pregnant me and ds nearly died.
Hormonal op?
It's a floor...
And a lovely one at that!!
Shove a few choccies down and get yourself out of the house....

trackingmedown · 10/07/2019 11:23

We have an American Oak floor and it is exactly that colour. I love it and it wears well as it doesn’t show the odd mark or scratch that inevitably come with family life. It also has the advantage of camouflaging dirt well so doesn’t need washing too often.

Have another coffee and a Kit Kat and hopefully you’ll get used to it soon.

formerbabe · 10/07/2019 11:26

I prefer that colour of flooring to the lighter stuff. It's more contemporary.

Bookworm4 · 10/07/2019 11:26

It’s somewhere to hang coats and dump shoes definitely not worth crying over. You’ll soon have a baby to keep you busy and a wee floor will be the last of your concerns.

Coralfish · 10/07/2019 11:28

Obviously not what you wanted, but I think it looks lovely. Any chance you'll get used to it?

Goawayquickly · 10/07/2019 11:29

Honestly that colour is much nicer, darker wood floors look way classier than light, it’s lovely. But yeah, when I was pregnant I could get upset over all sorts of things, I nearly became hysterical over the ‘wrong’ biscuits one time.

Opossooom · 10/07/2019 11:29

Oh OP I love it! Did you DIY? Or did a company do it? If so complain if it’s yourself can it not be sanded down and redone?

JemSynergy · 10/07/2019 11:32

I like it. I actually prefer dark wood. Although usually wood darkens in time - mine has.
