AIBU to be sitting, at 35 weeks pregnant, sobbing on my sofa instead of going to a mums to be coffee morning as my newly stained flooring looks so terrible I can't stand to look at it

I had some wooden flooring put in our newly built front extension which I planned to be an entry space with coat rack and shoe baskets etc.
I chose oak flooring and bought a child and environment friendly lightest possible wood stain. I've tried to include a picture showing the resulting the stain after being applied yesterday along with sample colours and a piece of wood showing how it was originally - it's supposed to be the 'American' colour in the sample picture.

Every time I look at it I want to cry. It looks so awful it sickens me and I hate it. I don't even want to go in there, which is ridiculous as it's our front entry to the house I was supposed to go to a coffee morning with some other mums shortly, but I know I will just get upset and look a mess if I try and go out.

I'm going to go and have the second coffee I was saving to have when I went out along with some chocolate in a poor attempt to try and feel slightly better

Oh no. It's really too dark isn't it. When was it finished and did you give feedback to the work people?
I feel you! I'm 25 weeks and we are redecorating and I feel so strongly about dark wood flooring. My husband likes it and it's causing issues! I hope what other pps have said is right and it will fade over time!

JamieVardysHavingAParty · 10/07/2019 11:39

As an objective third party, it looks lovely.

However, yanbu to be upset: you're 35 weeks pregnant and it's not what you wanted it to look like.

Give it a week or so and see how you feel then.

maeb · 10/07/2019 11:42

Okay, it looks lovely but American Oak is lighter than that. We have furniture and flooring in AO and it's light*.

Who applied the varnish, what do they think? You call the manufacturer and ask for their advice. There's a chance it could lighten as it cures, or that the container has been mislabelled...

But more importantly please don't be upset. As long as you and your baby are well then everything is peachy! Floors can be sanded, or left till next year. Flowers

Waveysnail · 10/07/2019 11:44

Oak goes quite dark even with a clear varnish/stain. I love it op

MatildaTheCat · 10/07/2019 11:46

The flooring does look pretty much like the sample you show in the middle picture tbh.

I would make a deal with yourself. Live with it for a defined period, say six months and then if you still hate it look at getting it sanded and redone with a clear or lighter finish. I would be surprised if you did want to by then but it doesn’t have to be left that way if it’s truly wrong.

I have almost always had doubts about major changes and frequently ended up loving them.

Have coffee and she’d a tear with your friends and then laugh about creating a storm in a teacup. Smile

YANBU as you are hormonal and disappointed.

However YABU saying this is horrible as I actually think it looks really nice!!

I'd try and spend some time away from the floor. Maybe go sit in the garden and read a light-hearted book. Then you might feel better.

noonarna · 10/07/2019 11:52

It's a beautiful, timeless colour. I'd be crying over the UPVC door!

Pascha · 10/07/2019 11:56

It's beautiful so yabu but you're also 34 weeks pregnant which makes you right whatever the question is so go ahead and cry. Its fine.

listsandbudgets · 10/07/2019 11:58

OP its lovely. Weve got a similar colour in our hall. I wouldn't want it lighter as it would show every last blasted stain and shoe mark.

I know it's not quite what you expected but it does look really nice.

Sorry you're feeling rubbish. Make sure you've eaten then go out for a bit of fresh air.

GrabbyGertie · 10/07/2019 12:00

I think it’s a nice colour too. I prefer it to the lighter colour.

missbattenburg · 10/07/2019 12:03

It's a lovely colour and much more practical for an entry way than something lighter. I also don't think it's a million miles away from the before/after sample picture.

I second the suggestion to live with it for a little while and then see how you feel. Almost everything can be undone and redone if you really hate it.

p.s. not much use for this time but next time remember to sample a stain on a spare bit of flooring or somewhere small and easily hidden. Just in case :)

HopelessLayout · 10/07/2019 12:06

I love this colour. I have light oak flooring and it's turned yellowish over time. I'd much prefer the colour you have.

Nicklebox · 10/07/2019 12:17

I agree with the other posters as well, it looks lovely and i would love it in my own home.

Dec2019mumtobe · 10/07/2019 12:18

What all that lot ^ said

Jemima232 · 10/07/2019 12:18

We had new flooring in our bathroom a year ago and I chose it and hated it from the off.

I was so glad that a leak from a pipe ruined it and we were able to claim on the house insurance and get new flooring.

Needless to say I love the new flooring. However, it doesn't match the paint I thought I'd chosen so carefully.

Yes - a first-world problem - but I fully understand your misery.

SabineUndine · 10/07/2019 12:20

It looks lovely very like mine tbh but you're probably feeling tired and fragile at the moment.

Dec2019mumtobe · 10/07/2019 12:21

Also, our front room (in a rented house) used to have oak flooring stained in the exact same colour.

Never looked dirty. I rarely cleaned it!

By contrast, the floor by the front door was a really light laminate type thing... and it permanently looked filthy.

Forensicpsych · 10/07/2019 12:23

It’s so much nicer than the lighter colour!! Confused

Dowser · 10/07/2019 12:25

I have a very unclassy light floor 🤔 that I love and I think yours looks lovely too. Don’t sweat it for now.
Take yourself out and relax for a while.
It can be fixed

Derbee · 10/07/2019 12:29

Sorry OP, I think it looks really lovely! So I’d say YABU, but also understand you’re very pregnant...

However, a mums to be coffee morning, and catch up with your friends is much more important than sitting at home crying about a minor first world problem. Get some perspective on it - go out and have a nice time, and see how you feel as you walk back in in a couple of hours

Oblomov19 · 10/07/2019 12:31

I think it looks awful. Sorry. But like a pp, I don't think the floor was initially laid very well. Could you talk to whoever did both?
Your'll get used to it!

Bluetrews25 · 10/07/2019 12:58

I like the colour.
Yes, you are at the mercy of your hormones right now and it is making you more upset than you need to be.
Get out, see your friends, tell them about it, and you might - if you are lucky! - have a laugh about it, or at least you have the opportunity to think about something else.
Even if you still detest it in 6 months, it's only the porch floor, FGS, and will be barely visible for all the family clutter on it.

Ceebs85 · 10/07/2019 13:02

So much nicer than the sample!!

itsabongthing · 10/07/2019 13:05

@noonarna
I'd be crying over the UPVC door

Grin

Don’t give her something else to cry about!!

AyBeeCee10 · 10/07/2019 13:16

I would cry too. It looks like smudges of dirt randomly. Can they not redo it as they didnt seem to place the flow of the pieces together. I had this done recently but they provided imagines of exactly what it would look like.
