To think that for medical reasons it is important that transgender people are correctly sexed

Saw this doctor on This Morning being called a bigot by Piers Morgan

Religious views aside, I think he raises an important point.

I've seen several cases recently where transgender people have been incorrectly identified by medical staff leading to their death/serious injury or the death of a baby.

Surely the solution is to retain their correct sex on medical records, birth certificate etc with a TG marker.

So AIBU to think that for medical reasons alone it is important that transgender people are correctly sexed?

A very little respect. (Shon, not Erasure themselves)

Prawnofthepatriarchy

But the OP isn't talking about changing rooms, toilets or the DWP.

It's talking about recording sex on medical records so why are you bringing everything else into it?

@decomposing

It's all facets of the same issue...
Where would be an acceptable place to draw the line?

SlocombePooter · 12/07/2019 17:55

One thing that occurred to me just now.

In our area there is such pressure on GP appointments that telephone and email consultations are being brought in. In these circumstances, I would imagine there is more room for the GP to be unaware that a person is not the sex they claim, so mistakes are more feasible than if the patient presents in person. Therefore it is even more sensible to record sex on the medical records.

xD

Do people think a med pro will look at a naked human and not identify that they have had gender confirming surgery? Especially if that involved a masectomy?! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

yeah... no...

If someone is bleeding out of their genitals, you rule out pregnancy. If someone has severe abdominal pain, you USS to see what you can see. Or xray. Or scan. Honestly.

We go to university and stuff! And read lots of books. And watch Bizarre ER

Do you think someone who KNOWS they have the capacity to conceive and has engaged in intercoursewhich couldlead to pregnancy shows up at A+E and denies that they have this anatomy despite fearing for their health?

drspouse · 12/07/2019 21:02

They don't deny it, but they obscure it by saying they are a transman, or just that they are trans, which is what happened in the stillbirth case.
Or they are unconscious.

Antecedent · 12/07/2019 22:04

That's shitty doctering. If someone says they are a trans man then as a doctor you should know that means "could still have uterus" and therefore "might be pregnant". If someone is uncocious, you ASSUME NOTHING and CHECK EVERYTHING. I didn't even learn that in uni, I learnt that on Holby City or one of those shows.
