About periods and holidays

Since turning 40 my cycle has changed a bit and ia anything from 23 days to 30. My periods are 'normal' last about a week with heavy/uncomfortable first 2 days tailing off. I cant use tampons or take norethisterone.
So my aibu, I have 3 weeks off work to go on holiday, because of my cycle I wanted to hold of booking until I had my last period so I could judge when best to go (for a week) to avoid having it while away in a hot country. We are looking for villas and my dh has thrown a wobbly saying that we have missed out on all the best villas leaving it until the last minute, apparantly noone else is ruled by their periods the way I am and I should just manageHmm thoughts??

I don't know if some posters just refuse to accept that not everyone is the same, or haven't got the mental ability to comprehend the concept.

Why can't you use tampons? You could surely use them when going in pool or sea, if not at other times.
EVEN IF the OP could use tampons, what makes you think they allow you to in the pool? Tampons do not stop heavy bleeding.

However people do go on holiday when they are having a period and manage quite well.
how do you know? You have made a survey have you? Can't you understand that "having a period" is not the same for everybody?

I am always amazed at how some posters, usually women, haven't got the slightest clue but a strong opinion.

Go in the pill temporarily and take it without a break? or get a mirena? tbh yes I do think you are unreasonable, you can't run your life around your periods.

Every holiday I book coincides with my period. Intensely frustrating because of the PMT on the lead up and the potential flooding, bloating etc whilst we are away. I do my best to plan around it but never seems to work out...

Drum2018 · 08/07/2019 16:56

@brummiesue I completely understand you and would be the same. Last year I took primulot but was left with the feeling of being due, sore boobs for and extra fortnight, horrible period after I came off it. So I wouldn't rush to take it again. This year we haven't booked as yet but both my dates and dd's dates will be factored in. She gets faint and sick so wouldn't be much fun being away. As for your Dh, tell him until he grows a uterus he doesn't get an opinion on your periods! Would he prefer a week of no sex while on holiday?

I get heavy periods and the doctor has suggested a mirena coil, it makes them much lighter and can even stop them altogether. Is that an option?
With regards to your holiday booking, you should be able to find something as long as you're not too fussy about where you go. If you have your heart set on a particular resort you may have problems (esp if it's in school holidays) so I can see where he is coming from. Your flights will be very expensive too.

My periods are unpredictable and cause me about 36 hours a cycle where I can barely stand up straight. We absolutely do our best to work holidays around my cycle.

Thanks, nobreakfromme, I forgot the op has had a prolapse which puts a different complexion on it. Sorry op.

I don't have periods any more. Yay! However I used to have floods, they lasted a long time, were quite dreadful and never regular so I was glad when they all came to an end. They settled down and were less heavy for the last couple of years though and I actually felt 'normal' for the first time.

When I was on the pill before DC periods were fine but they aren't proper periods anyway. I did take the pill 'back to back' a couple of times.

My biggest worry when going on holiday was being in the car for a long time. I felt as though I needed to wear a baby's disposable nappy and have a puppy training pad on the seat.

My cousin had floods but she had fibroids and when they were dealt with she was OK. I had nothing wrong with me, bah.

Looking back I wish I had gone back on the pill for a short while before going on holiday. Hindsight and all that.

I hope the op finds a solution to this problem if only for her holiday but it would be nice if she found something permanent. So many have bad periods and are expected to just get on with it. Life is not fair in many respects.

I book our holidays over a year out.

If not risk a good deal/location for a few days of tampons.

Please go to the doctors and see if mini pill might be an option. I'm on the pill and have been for years and really don't want to come off it simply for the convenience it gives to be able to run packs back to back if there is a holiday or event when i would be due. I get that not everyone can take hormonal contraception, or indeed wants to put something artificial into their system but for me, the inconvenience of a period at the 'wrong' time is worse so its a choice I make. And I don't even have particularly heavy or painful periods but you still feel a bit grotty and can't relax as much as you want. Have a chat with your GP, different pills have different levels of hormones in them and one might be suitable for you, even just in the short term.
