Boots body shaming advert?

MouthFullofGum · 05/07/2019 19:50

So two curvy girls take off their sarongs and feel confident walking into the sea - Great.

But why do they have to walk by obviously thinner women who are made to look judgmental and unconfident in themselves?

I thought body confidence was about saying all shapes and sizes should be embraced? Not uplifting one to shame the other.

I've not seen the advert. But, from the way you've described it, YANBU.

b0bb1n · 05/07/2019 19:53

I hate that advert

Thewalker75 · 05/07/2019 19:54

I agree, its replacing one form of shaming for another.

Same with that Meghan traynor song 'all about that base' where she talks about skinny bitches.

Likethebattle · 05/07/2019 19:54

The curvy girls aren’t even that big, have no cellulite etc.

For anyone who actually wants to see the advert

Yeah they are curvy with no cellulite and a flat stomach

I quite like that advert. I didn't notice the thinner women looking judgmental, one of the women seems to give them a "good for you" look.

WeeDangerousSpike · 05/07/2019 19:59

I think they look the same as the woman on the poster they look at and say 'no one looks like that' Confused

HollyBollyBooBoo · 05/07/2019 20:01

God if they're curvy I'm doomed! I hadn't clocked they were supposed to be bigger than others?

laurG · 05/07/2019 20:03

It is a bit patronising. A step in the right direction but just sort of highlights the fact ‘normal’ isn’t good enough.

CherryPlum · 05/07/2019 20:03

I hate that advert

Shimy · 05/07/2019 20:03

Surely the whole premise of the advert is to show that traditionally, only thin people could be confident enough to strip at the beach, whilst curvy women hid under a sarong. Now curvy women are done with that rubbish and strutting their stuff at the beach much to the consternation of thinner women around. This is true depiction? They’re not saying thin women shouldn’t strut their stuff at the beach, just that the beach is for both thin and curvies. Love the advert.

OralBElectricToothbrush · 05/07/2019 20:06

My DD is naturally thin and muscular. Why is that 'nobody looks like that'? She does! But yy, the 'curvy' woman aren't even big and have no cellulite, spider veins, etc.

SwedishEdith · 05/07/2019 20:08

God, I hate it! The dancing - there's no actual music in the sea.

Sadie789 · 05/07/2019 20:09

Can’t stand that advert! “Nobody looks like that...” well, actually, thousands upon thousands of women do look like that! Lots of women are slim, lots are gorgeous, nature blessed them and they shouldn’t be made to feel bad about it.

At the same time the so-called “real women” in the ad are not really that representative of what they are targeting (overweight women) because they have perfectly proportioned bodies, they’re tall, and have flat stomachs!! The day they put someone like me in an ad (short, very apple shaped, blotchy, moley skin, c section shelf) then I might say well done advertisers.

Until then it’s just more patronising crap.

alltoomuchrightnow · 05/07/2019 20:11

Essie nail varnish on a beach! Yeh right... chips after one hour in normal circumstance! (misses point entirely)
Annoying ad though. And they aren't big at all

huggybear · 05/07/2019 20:11

But the vast majority of women in the UK do not look like models on posters, and often the models themselves don't look like that either. I agree though we shouldn't put down people who are beautifully slim.

huggybear · 05/07/2019 20:12

May favourite bit is the Welsh singing though.

alltoomuchrightnow · 05/07/2019 20:13

who does their hair BEFORE entering the sea?!!

malificent7 · 05/07/2019 20:14

Tbh when im abroad i am too hot to care what my body looks like anyway...i let it all hang out and any shame about fat disappears.

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 05/07/2019 20:14

just watched it

skybluee · 05/07/2019 20:15

Ugh what a weird advert.
Grating.

JoxerGoesToStuttgart · 05/07/2019 20:17

Surely the whole premise of the advert is to show that traditionally, only thin people could be confident enough to strip at the beach

Except countless women, much larger than those two in the ad, do every single summer. Go to any beach in the U.K. on a hot day and you will see all shapes and sizes in swimming suits and bikinis. That’s why this ad pisses me off, it implies larger women should feel hesitant before taking off their top layer at then beach when the reality is, they aren’t. So why are boots trying to plant the seed that they should be?

Much better they just do an ad with all their products and women of different shapes and sizes using them. Without actually making ten add about their shape or size!

sadkoala · 05/07/2019 20:21

I have more of an issue with lots of ads using "bigger/curvy" women that actually look slim and flawless.
I'd love to look like that but even though I'm a similar size my post DC body can't compare.

I'd love to see a size 12/14 with a bit of a mum tum, stretch marks and cellulite rather than someone who looks airbrushed.

NCforthis2019 · 05/07/2019 20:24

Yeah I agree - it’s a shit advert. Seems you can’t say anything about bigger girls without getting accused left right and centre but happy to shame skinnier girls - all bets are off there right. 🤷🏻‍♀️
