Boots body shaming advert?

MouthFullofGum · 05/07/2019 19:50

So two curvy girls take off their sarongs and feel confident walking into the sea - Great.

But why do they have to walk by obviously thinner women who are made to look judgmental and unconfident in themselves?

I thought body confidence was about saying all shapes and sizes should be embraced? Not uplifting one to shame the other.

I’ve re-read the thread.
Where is the body shaming? Unless you’re counting people pointing out the health risks of being obese?

Alsohuman · 06/07/2019 11:46

I’m out of here. No serious debate whatsoever, just “I’m riiiiiight, you’re wrooooong”. And where did I say I felt bad about myself? I’m very happy in my skin, despite your best efforts.

PurpleDaisies · 06/07/2019 11:48

I’m out of here. No serious debate whatsoever, just “I’m riiiiiight, you’re wrong”

Translation: I couldn’t find any body shaming to back up my argument so I’m throwing my toys out of the pram and going home.

What's more to debate? I disagree with you, have explained why, and you are the one who shriek "fat shaming" when anyone disagrees.
I leave you to it.

Boneshere · 06/07/2019 12:43

I dislike the singing.
I don't like how the slimmer women look at "normal" women.
I don't like how the "normal" women look at the slimmer women.
I hate the singing. Needs mentioning twice, it's very grating on the sensory abilities.

The women in this advert should just be all going on their jollys together instead of making comparisons.

Boinky · 06/07/2019 12:49

Stating being overweight is wrong means fat-shaming?

Peculiar use of the word 'wrong'.

cuppycakey · 06/07/2019 13:02

I really hate the spiteful looks the woman on the beach is giving the "curvy" women as they run past into the sea.

No need to include that - very poor show.

Sunshine93 · 06/07/2019 13:05

Getting a bit frustrating reading "skinny women" and "normal women" as if they are Antonyms.

I say that as someone who is size 14 so not "skinny" but the word "normal" to decsribe women my sort of size implies abnormality if you are a size 8 which is offensive.

QueenoftheBiscuitTin · 06/07/2019 13:07

It was poorly done and whatever message they were aiming for hasn't translated well.

Boneshere · 06/07/2019 13:33

I don't know how else to describe from the directors point of view. The way the actresses said "no one looks like that" is implying that thinner women are not normal if no one looks that way, and that they are.

Alsohuman · 06/07/2019 13:35

Surely the “no one looks like that” alludes to the glossiness and groomed look of the poster woman, not her size.

Riceandthings · 06/07/2019 13:37

Bag'o shite.

Boinky · 06/07/2019 13:41

Yes it's 'no one wears all that makeup and jewellery and poses like that on the beach'. Because it seems as though Boots have (carefully I presume) chosen a model for that shot who isn't model thin herself.

brotown · 06/07/2019 13:44

I wouldn’t have said it’s anything about body shape/size.
The women look great and feel confident after using all the Boots products. The rest of the beach are looking at them approvingly

BogglesGoggles · 06/07/2019 13:46

It’s quite hypocritical though isn’t it? You can be confident about you ‘imperfect’ body so long as you buy all this crap from us...

Boinky · 06/07/2019 13:47

There's always a catch with capitalism!

coral13 · 06/07/2019 13:50

It annoys me as a skinny person as it starts with "no one looks like that"

Well they do!

Boinky · 06/07/2019 13:52

jaysus

Seeleyboo · 06/07/2019 13:52

Christ. Hardly curvy. No stretch marks or wobbles. Hate any advert that body shames anyone or gives their idealistic thin or curvy person. Most women don't look like that. The average woman is way larger and wobblier. With cellulite and mottled skin or uber red from the sun. Or maybe that's just me. Grin

HelenaDove · 06/07/2019 14:09

Being a slim and attractive woman is in no way shape or form a prepubescent girl ideal

Youve given yourself away here @that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 Because looks are what you are concerned about Youve used the word attractive So who do you think women owe attractiveness too Men or other women.

Feminist my backside

HelenaDove · 06/07/2019 14:16

I really hate the spiteful looks the woman on the beach is giving the "curvy" women as they run past into the sea

So there is no body shaming on this thread despite someone slipping up and using the word attractive yet we can read the mind of the woman on the sun lounger

I thought the look was more wistful. Like she wishes she had their confidence to just run into the sea

That was not a spiteful look.

MN is full of hypocrites who are all my body my choice
Until it comes to weight or mooncups that is

cuppycakey · 06/07/2019 14:32

Helena I totally accept you thought the look was wistful. I believe you.

It's a shame you appear to be unable to accept that other posters thought the look was spiteful.

Do you often have problems understanding that people have different interpretations of things to yourself?

HelenaDove · 06/07/2019 14:39

And i totally accept you thought the look was spiteful.

what the heck did you think we were talking about until now?

Gth1234 · 06/07/2019 19:20

if its the advert I'm thinking off, the two women look very attractive, and could hardly have body issues.
