Boots body shaming advert?

MouthFullofGum · 05/07/2019 19:50

So two curvy girls take off their sarongs and feel confident walking into the sea - Great.

But why do they have to walk by obviously thinner women who are made to look judgmental and unconfident in themselves?

I thought body confidence was about saying all shapes and sizes should be embraced? Not uplifting one to shame the other.

I like it. And the Tu one. It’s about time. It seems there’s no pleasing some people.

Writersblock2 · 05/07/2019 20:49

I’m fed up of all of this bollocks tbh. What we need is NO focus on bodies at all. Just people doing their thing. It’s the unhealthy obsession society has with our physicality that has got us into this mess - just shifting the focus to a different body type does bugger all.

PissOffPeppa · 05/07/2019 20:50

I much prefer the Sainsbury’s (I think) one. Just shows a whole load of women, different sizes and shapes, looking comfortable in their own skin. None of this pitting one size against another bollocks.

No horrible screeching either, unlike the godawful Boots noise.

that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 · 05/07/2019 20:50

ahem.. it's an advert about being confident, where on earth do you get body shaming in there?!?

There's no attack against the slimmer ladies, no attack against the more curvier ones and they laugh about unattainable model picture.

Of all the adverts to be offended against, that's not one of them.

jaseyraex · 05/07/2019 20:52

I think it's the fact that they are two perfectly average sized women that makes it annoying. Yes, they're curvy. But not a stretch mark, bit of cellulite, or couple of stomach rolls on them. They're curvy in the "right places" as such.

I like the Simply Be advert. It actually has women of all shapes and sizes with imperfections.

Justanotherlurker · 05/07/2019 20:54

They don’t look that big to me. Just average.

Part of the reason why we have an obesity epidemic and why Cancer UK are pushing out adverts that are also considered "fat shaming"

Marilynmansonsthermos · 05/07/2019 20:56

It's an annoying awful ad but I can't see the body shaming in it..

I was going to say that!

Sunshine93 · 05/07/2019 20:57

But I think that's the point.

I also took the "no-one looks like that" to be referring more to the perfectly shiny glowing skin, her perfect hair and made up face the way the bikini model stands etc (because she has been airbrushed) rather than her size. It would be ridiculous to say no-one is the size of the model because obviously there are women that slim and slimmer women.

It's saying women on the beach are all shapes and sizes with no or some make up and quite likely imperfect hair etc. That's how I take it anyway. It's not about being skinny or curvy or fat it's about being imperfect, which all non airbrushed women are.

I don't think they should have had slimmer women on the sunbeds looking at them though.

Juells · 05/07/2019 20:58

God that Boots ad song is dreadful, an assault on the ears.

Those women look perfectly normal, with good figures. The ad is insulting as it's implying that you'd need to stoke up your confidence to bare all that shameful flesh Hmm

Isthebigwomanhere · 05/07/2019 21:01

Can't stand that advert.
Who the hell throws their sarong off and then starts dancing in the sea.!

Foxglove18 · 05/07/2019 21:03

I just can’t stand the cringe inducing song Envy

sounds about right, what's so insulting about that?
Have a read through the diet threads if you must.

Thewalker75 · 05/07/2019 21:09

But it's the look on the slim woman's face on the sun lounger all disapproving as they strutt their stuff into the sea which gets me. Surely she should be smiling and joining them with a load of other women? It's all just a bit bitchy.

And yes, agree about the whole 'you can't possibly go on the beach without chucking a load of boots products on you first'.

Part of the reason why we have an obesity epidemic and why Cancer UK are pushing out adverts that are also considered "fat shaming"

Diabetes is one of the fastest growing and most potentially devastating conditions. The number of people diagnosed with diabetes has more than doubled over the last 10 years. That means around 700 are newly diagnosed every day. This crisis shows no signs of slowing.

Whilst Type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented, a major risk factor for developing Type 2 diabetes is being overweight or obese. We know that if we were able to reduce obesity levels we could reduce the numbers of people with Type 2 diabetes in the future. With almost two in every three people in the UK overweight or obese, there are now 12.3 million people at an increased risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

Reducing the number of people in the UK who are overweight or obese would reduce the number of people developing Type 2 diabetes in the future

From the Diabetes UK website.

All the moving the goal posts , "Vanity Sizing" and pandering round names to not say the words Obese /Fat.

As a nation we are getting fatter . And we will reap what we sow ..

Allyg1185 · 05/07/2019 21:12

Does anyone dance like that in the sea?? ( missing the point )

that25cUKHeatwaveof2019 · 05/07/2019 21:12

'you can't possibly go on the beach without chucking a load of boots products on you first'.

as it's an ad' for Boots, not sure why that's so shocking Grin

Do you think those women are obese then?

dancingcamper · 05/07/2019 21:15

Exactly, and why adverts for big business aren't a good place for anyone to look for advice.

LauderSyme · 05/07/2019 21:18

Just watched it. I feel patronised.

CraicMammy · 05/07/2019 21:20

Thighs coming out?! 🤮

In fairness I’m glad they’ve represented women as we really are, disco dancing in waves and ignoring the side eye, zuzzhing my hair every two minutes and giggling!!

All too often women these days are portrayed as having responsibilities, families, and a silly old desire to be regarded as more than ornamental; I really feel in the advert that Boots understands me as a women and how I truly want to be seen.

Thanks Boots

PS my advantage card’s in the post you patronising idiots

BinkyBaa · 05/07/2019 21:21

I agree with sadkoala. The women chosen for the advert sort of defeat the point.

I'd say I'm quite a bit skinnier than them, but I've got a stomach that sticks out, cellulite, stretch marks and so on.

With their flat stomachs and perfect skin they've airbrushed out the things we all get, regardless of size.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 05/07/2019 21:24

Stupid advert. I'd like to see an identical one but with men instead. Never gonna happen is it?

userxx · 05/07/2019 21:29

I was thinking of totally the wrong advert. Nope, don't like this at all.

megletthesecond · 05/07/2019 21:31

I always hate these types of adverts.
Everyone , no matter their size, has flawless skin in them. No one has excess hair, pimples, scars and regretted tattoos.
