To be embarrassed to be British?

I've just seen on the news that the 29 Brexit Party MEPs all turned their backs (quite literally) during the European anthem in yesterday's opening session to the European Parliament.

Regardless of Pro-Brexit / Anti-Brexit debates, this is deeply deeply inappropriate, insanely undiplomatic and will have done nothing other than make the UK look ridiculous, childish and plain rude.

I'm ashamed to be represented by these people and the way things are going, ashamed to be a part of a country that is behaving like this.
Everyone else in Europe must think we are dirt.

I read on twitter today "I'm not ashamed to be British, but I'm ashamed that they are" which summed it up for me

KennDodd · 03/07/2019 22:16

I agree. It's not just the Brexit party though, it's all the hate filled people who vote for them as well.

Dragongirl10 · 03/07/2019 22:16

yep, most embarrasing

AhhhHereItGoes · 03/07/2019 22:17

It's the British being annoyed they are no longer the centre of attention conquering other countries and feeling their great see above past means they should be valued above all else.

We are the bully who pushed a kid in front of a car, pulled them out at last minute and expects to be congratulated and admired until end times.

The Brexit Party as a whole has no clue what it wants except to divide the country and discriminate. I myself like PPs see a lot of parallels with the Nazis. As Farage has had ties to neonazis (apparantly) then that is a quite frightening thought.

kmammamalto · 03/07/2019 22:17

Agree it's an embarrassment. And I can't believe the similarity to the Nazi picture.
We were on holiday recently in Denmark and a restaurant had an IPA called Brexit. All of the Danes thought it was hilarious and were asking us if we had tried it! At this stage, being for it against brexit is a non point, but the shambles it has turned into is a complete embarrassment.

StoneofDestiny · 03/07/2019 22:18

Yes, and soon we'll have Johnson making a tit of himself every day

Yes - big pal of Farage that he is.

Orangeballon · 03/07/2019 22:18

I am never ashamed to be Scottish.

KennDodd · 03/07/2019 22:18

I do have a couple of friends who voted Leave who also hate Farage him for the nasty racist he is. Most leavers I know love him though.

AgentCooper · 03/07/2019 22:20

YANBU. They’re pathetic. Who do these idiots think they are? The whole of Europe must be laughing at Britain.

TheRedBarrows · 03/07/2019 22:20

NorthernParent “To say it makes you ashamed is hyperbole”
Her feelings are her own.
And I’m not sure you fully understand the term.

These MEPs are there as representatives. They had no right to behave in such a rude pathetic childish way on the UK taxpayer’s ticket.

They are making giant arses of themselves so I feel less personally ashamed.

But our political class is an international laughing stock. All of them, at the moment. Embarrassing. But far worse: terrifying.

Allhailthesun · 03/07/2019 22:24

Bet you wouldn’t be embarrassed if it was something you agreed with though? Maybe Remainers turning their backs on a No Deal Parliament. Turning their backs on Trump at a climate change conference.

They were turning their backs against the music which is the EU “ national” anthem. The EU is supposed to be a co operative of states not a state in its own right.

truthisarevolutionaryact · 03/07/2019 22:24

Agreed OP. Shameful behaviour - as are the Lib Dems with their childish tee shirts.

Such dismal politicians everywhere Sad

PreseaCombatir · 03/07/2019 22:26

why would you be ashamed?
Did you do it?
Would you expect a Muslim to be ashamed because of the London Bridge attacks?
Don’t understand this mentality at all

Jsmith99 · 03/07/2019 22:28

YANBU.

I am embarrassed to be British too, and I have been since 24 June 2016. A few days after the referendum, I had to go to Munich on a business trip. At the conference I spoke with colleagues from all over Europe, and there was only one topic of conversation. People were stunned by the result, and found it incomprehensible. They looked to me for an explanation, but they were asking the wrong person.

I want us to go back to being the proud, open, inclusive, welcoming, forward-looking country which hosted the London Olympics (was it really seven years ago?), instead of the nasty, petty, divided little country of which I am now so deeply ashamed.

KennDodd · 03/07/2019 22:29

Completely agree re Lib Dems as well. If they wanted to wear slogan tshirts maybe '63% of the electorate didn't vote for Brexit' would have been better. No swear words.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 03/07/2019 22:32

Bet you wouldn’t be embarrassed if it was something you agreed with though

Bet i would

Ohnotanothernamechange · 03/07/2019 22:39

Everything about the Brexit party is cuntish and stupid. Their logo looks like it was knocked up by a 15 year old on photoshop for an art project.

ragged · 03/07/2019 22:42

I'm not ashamed, embarrassed, mortified or upset (by LibDem T-Shirts or at BxP turning backs).

I'm pissed off at BxP MEPs taking any salary when not doing the job, or for threatening to behave like vandals. Grrrr.

lakemountain · 03/07/2019 22:50

Everyone else in Europe must think we are dirt. why would people in Russia care genuine question btw

dangrenade · 03/07/2019 22:59

We voted for them so what do you expect? Suck it up as you may be in the majority on this forum but in the minority at the voting booths. The European Council are full of overpaid buffoons that are out of touch with reality so for me it was just another act in what is already a circus.

HellYeah90s · 03/07/2019 23:02

Although yes British politics have a lot to answer for, it is depressing all round. But the Brexit party has made it 100% worse..

NameChange9854 · 03/07/2019 23:03

Absolutely embarrassed. Luckily I've emigrated post-vote so hopefully I can get myself a shiny new citizenship before long...just need to work on changing my accent Grin

Figmentofmyimagination · 03/07/2019 23:04

They have been giving interviews justifying their decision to turn their backs ....to breitbart news....

Figmentofmyimagination · 03/07/2019 23:06

We should be more ashamed of the tw*ts who voted to put the brexit party in the European Parliament.

CellularBlanket · 03/07/2019 23:11

I agree OP . I too was ashamed. I work all over Europe and closely with people from EU member countries and I could barely show my face. Such a lack of respect. And I couldn't justify it or explain it. Horrible.
