To be embarrassed to be British?

I've just seen on the news that the 29 Brexit Party MEPs all turned their backs (quite literally) during the European anthem in yesterday's opening session to the European Parliament.

Regardless of Pro-Brexit / Anti-Brexit debates, this is deeply deeply inappropriate, insanely undiplomatic and will have done nothing other than make the UK look ridiculous, childish and plain rude.

I'm ashamed to be represented by these people and the way things are going, ashamed to be a part of a country that is behaving like this.
Everyone else in Europe must think we are dirt.

Yep it's so embarrassing.

ilovesooty · 03/07/2019 21:34

I've felt ashamed to be British for a long time now.

LauderSyme · 03/07/2019 21:34

I had the exact same reaction OP. These people are representing us on the world stage.

Kittypillar · 03/07/2019 21:37

Yep. Constantly. And just when I think I couldn't feel any more embarrassed, it always seems to get worse. It's like this country is on f*ing glue at the moment...

ReasonablyIntelligent · 03/07/2019 21:42

The idiot Brexit Party are the ones 'behaving like this'. Not the national government or the country as a whole.

Do you get embarrassed by everything every political party ever does?

They are representing the country at European Parliament - so their behaviour is very very key to how we as the UK are seen

I think it's deliberate - if we piss the EU off enough they'll tell us to piss off on 31st October. I wouldn't have expected them to do anything else - after all they were voted in as a protest vote and to make Brexit happen. I reckon those who did vote for them will be cheering from the rafters.

pigsDOfly · 03/07/2019 21:51

Agree, it's an appallingly discourteous way to behave, not to mention incredibly childish.

Yes, of course they're representing us to the rest of Europe. The rest of Europe must look at these people and conclude that the British are a nation of uncouth louts.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 03/07/2019 21:54

I wasn’t ashamed

Bloody embarrassed though!!

HellYeah90s · 03/07/2019 21:55

I have just renewed my British passport much to my disgrace. But I need it for work.

So depressing. I use to be so proud of my British heritage (I am only half British).

I am so ashamed, I am dual nationality, its got to the point where I use my other passport and my kids do too if we are travelling outside of Europe. Poor DH has to lump it with his British passport Grin

RubberTreePlant · 03/07/2019 21:56

I think the whole of Europe are perfectly well aware that the UK are split on this issue.

Hopoindown31 · 03/07/2019 21:58

Farage and his crypto-fascist chums letting the mask slip a bit by emulating the nazi party again.

We get the politicians we deserve. These jokers wouldn't be there in such numbers if so many people hadn't voted for them.

Lifecraft · 03/07/2019 22:00

I'm not embarrassed to be British, just embarrassed that they are British.

Bezalelle · 03/07/2019 22:01

The similarity with that Nazi picture is terrifying.

howrudeforme · 03/07/2019 22:01

@timeforakinderworld

Our rep abroad? You kidding? Possibly politically, but not as tourists.

I was pretending not to be british abroad decades back 🤨

RubberTreePlant · 03/07/2019 22:01

@Lifecraft Grin

bingbongnoise · 03/07/2019 22:01

The brexit people facing backwards AND the lib-dems with their offensive t-shirts were ALL an embarrassment.

I am not ashamed to be British though. I have done nothing wrong.

hadthesnip2 · 03/07/2019 22:03

The EU call it their anthem. Its a bit of classical music by Mozart & doesn't belong to an autocratic bureaucracy. I'm with the Brexit party on this one.

FrancisofAss · 03/07/2019 22:05

Totally agree OP. Brexit party shamed us all.

The Lib Dem’s T-shirts were crap. If they had just said stop Brexit then fine but a swear word on the back degraded their message.

As a country with no leader, utterly divided and represented by these fools we look a complete and utter joke at the moment. I can’t imagine how we are going to restore our standing in the world.

At least there’s still Trump making an absolute tit of himself every day in the US so we’re not the only ones Hmm.

Poloshot · 03/07/2019 22:09

I applaud them. Dry your eyes handwringer

Isatis · 03/07/2019 22:10

I’d be more impressed if they refused to draw their MEP salaries and expenses. However, like the UKIP representatives before them, members of the Brexit party are at the front of the queue when it comes to getting their snouts in the trough.

MyLovelyLadyFlumps · 03/07/2019 22:10

hadthesnip it’s Beethoven.

RubberTreePlant · 03/07/2019 22:10

Brexit party shamed us all.

Speak for your bloody self Hmm

Most of the first two-decades-and-a-bit of my life were taken up with the evil Thatcher regime (an actual government). Then there was Blair's illegal war. Then the coalition and Tory poor-bashing branded 'austerity'.

I'd have spent more than three quarters of my life self-flagellating if the nasty actions of politicians i don't support 'shamed' me.

What a peculiar and soggy-brained notion.

Isatis · 03/07/2019 22:11

Beethoven, hadthesnip.

pigsDOfly · 03/07/2019 22:11

Yes, and soon we'll have Johnson making a tit of himself every day.
