To think my toddler vomits in the morning due to hunger?

Does anyone have any experience of this?

I’m almost certain my three year old ‘has’ this. It has happened a few times now.

I don’t know how to link. It is an article about low blood sugar in toddlers causing morning vomiting.

Does your toddler vomit every morning? Does it happen spontaneously? Any other symptoms?
See your GP.

user1471592953 · 02/07/2019 20:00

Hi - no, not every morning. It tends to be after an evening of eating less than usual. I guess I need to watch and wait to see whether it happens again. Will definitely see the GP if it continues. Was just wondering if anyone else had had the same experience.

I realise this will be utterly useless to you but my dog does the same for the same reason. Grin

It stopped when I increased her food after an energetic day at doggy daycare.

EatingBreadAndHoney · 02/07/2019 20:11

I vomit/retch if I get too hungry so it's not impossible.

BillywilliamV · 02/07/2019 20:12

See your GP, whatever this is it’s not normal!

Youwantshoesinashoeshop · 02/07/2019 20:14

My child does this sometimes too and has since he was about 3 or 4. He doesnt cope well with low blood sugar at all.

If it is very regular then I think GP to check for anything more malign. But yes possible.

BillywigSting · 02/07/2019 20:17

I get very very nauseous if I'm very hungry too so I can definitely see this being thing, I think a trip to the gp is in order though to rule out anything more sinister

netflixlove · 02/07/2019 20:17

My dog did this also, I think it's quite likely as I also feel really sick if I'm hungry.

Celebelly · 02/07/2019 20:17

My dog did this as a puppy! Grin

Notmyideamovingon · 02/07/2019 20:18

There's a campaign to raise awareness of regular morning vomiting as a symptom of a brain tumour. Headsmart. It's of course rare but wortha gp visit?

I would take to your doctor and ask for a referral for a glucose and ketone reading to be done at morning fasts. There's a condition called ketotic hypoglycaemia and the ketones cause nausea and vomiting if the blood sugars are too low for the body. It's an accelerated fasting condition and in mild cases rectified by eating on waking. If possible make sure your LO doesn't go to bed on an empty stomach or little food.

PM me if you'd like more information.

My 6yo is occasionally sick in the mornings if she hasn’t eaten well the night before. I also feel awful if my blood sugar is low so I’ve always just assumed it’s hereditary. It’s a pain in the neck every time because she then can’t go into school!

TowerRavenSeven · 02/07/2019 20:22

Yes definitely, this happened with my son but he was 10! He would vomit consistently every morning for about 4 days. I did research because he clearly wasn’t ill. I started giving him a small healthy snack right before bed and it never happened after that.

Butchyrestingface · 02/07/2019 20:25

I am not a toddler but I have had non diabetic hypoglycaemia since the age of 14. When my blood sugar levels hit the squids, I vomit and get an upset stomach.

PeterRabbitt · 02/07/2019 20:27

My 5 year old DS has done this since he was young. Had a particularly nasty sickness bug when he was about 18 months old and went from eating everything to practically nothing overnight. Even now he'll turn his nose up and three or four different options for tea and go to bed hungry by choice. Nearly always wakes up with awful stomache and vomits what little water he's held onto overnight. GP confirmed it was nothing to worry about currently and to come back if any of the circumstances change around his morning vomit.

purplecorkheart · 02/07/2019 20:33

Strange question but does he get sick before or after he brushes his teeth. The only reason I ask is because brushing my back teeth makes me gag and of I have eaten I will vomit and of not will puke up stomach acid. If anyone has tips I would be grateful.

ZigZagIntoTheBlue · 02/07/2019 20:44

I used to do this - then got diagnosed with crohn's disease. I still feel nauseous if I get hungry even though I'm in remission now. Worth keeping an eye on, keep a food diary and see if there are changes in frequency etc.

LizzieMacQueen · 02/07/2019 21:16

My dog bile-vomits if her stomach is empty and I feel nauseous too if I haven't eaten something plain-ish before bed the night before. I've had my gall bladder removed and assumed it was down to a build up of acid.

user1471592953 · 02/07/2019 22:05

Thanks for the replies, everyone. @Kanga83 I have PMed you.

I can also feel very nauseous if I don’t eat first thing in the morning but I have never vomited.

DC has no other symptoms - just mentions tummy ache and hunger.

The vomiting isn’t quite spontaneous in that we have given water and/or a very little food and vomiting happens after that. There is nothing in it except what has just been taken in.

@Butchyrestingface omg I think I have this too. WAY worse in pregnancy.

I've had GTT and the readings have never been above 4, often below 3. Does that sound similar to you? I've never had it investigated as GPs have just shrugged and said it's not a big deal as I'm rarely I'll with it (cs I snack constantly!)

CountryGirl1234 · 02/07/2019 22:09

Is your little one shakey after?
I used to throw up if I over heated, my body struggles to regulate temperature sometimes, but I’d go white and shakey afterwards for a while. Also if I’d have alcohol or eaten very little the night before.

Godsbricks48 · 02/07/2019 22:14

I don't want to worry parents but last year my friends 5 yr old died. Its turns out she had a twisted bowel. She was being sick before going to the toilet. If i didn't pass this info on & it happened to someone elses child i would be so upset. Also the hospital had discharged her.
