www.bbc.co.uk/news/video_and_audio/headlines/48800075/transgender-skater-fighting-to-compete?ocid=socialflow_facebook&ns_mchannel=social&ns_campaign=bbcnews&ns_source=facebook&fbclid=IwAR3SHOZZproHs8lkaYi9tz5VcKPnE9xQRt7AR8m8rRPu5lPTJkp1m1808Os

It's an 11 year old (born male) ice skater. There's a little video where to me she looks female.

I daren't put this on the feminism board, but AIBU to think that in 20 years time we will look back in shame at how we have treated transgendered individuals?

I just put myself in those shoes for 5 hours. What on earth would I think? How much hate would I feel? How fucked up/strange/weird would I feel?

I have a very uneasy feeling in my soul about the vociferous opposition to transgenderism on MN currently. It doesn't sit comfortably with me.

I came across this story just now and it's typical of I suppose what the feminist MNers want transgender people to face. I.e. that they can't...

Should she compete as a girl? Or AIBU?

There's no way that I could compete against a 6' female.
Should that 6' female be banned from competing against me as she has an unfair biological advantage?

What kind of argument is that?

Across-the-board, men are approximately 10% faster, stronger and more powerful than women.

In any given competition, men will consistently outperform women. It's got nothing to do with outliers of height. Your six foot woman will be running against a six-foot man.

The strongest female swimmer will be swimming against the strongest male swimmer. And will always be beaten.

Men, as a class, will consistently beat women as a class. Which is why we segregate by sex, not clothes preference.

MrsMiggins37 · 04/07/2019 15:38

Who can honestly look at this and tell those women that this is fair and they have to suck it up?

AIBU to think that this child should be allowed to compete as a girl? Transgender topic.
Thump · 04/07/2019 15:39

I agree - we need to accommodate transgender individuals in some way that doesn't deny them their identity.

SoupDragon · 04/07/2019 15:42

if you can't tell the difference between a 5' woman and a 6' woman, you have a problem.

I can though. I'm also able to tell that there would be few sports where they would be competing against each other. Unlike a transgender woman.

Datun · 04/07/2019 15:43

I agree - we need to accommodate transgender individuals in some way that doesn't deny them their identity.

They identify as a different gender, but they want the rights of the different sex. It's incompatible with fairness.

No one is invalidating their gender identity. They are just saying it doesn't translate to a different sex.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 04/07/2019 15:43

I can as well

Its a foot

(Is there a smug emoji? I feel i need one at this point)

JacquesHammer · 04/07/2019 15:43

I agree - we need to accommodate transgender individuals in some way that doesn't deny them their identity

So they have two options. Compete with their biological sex OR set up their own competitions.

SoupDragon · 04/07/2019 15:43

Nope. Girls outperform boys on all subjects including sciences at GCSE:

So - surely that means boys are at a disadvantage then? Again - why not segregate the sexes in that case?

Segregate them how?

EdtheBear · 04/07/2019 15:44

So are you trying to say 6ft woman should happily compete against 7ft bloke?

Thump · 04/07/2019 15:45

But if to all intents and purposes you are of the female gender, why shouldn't they have the rights of other females?

EdtheBear · 04/07/2019 15:45

Yes different builds and shapes suit different sports but that doesn't mean women should compete against men.

Thump · 04/07/2019 15:46

50% of uni places for males, 50% for females.

OldCrone · 04/07/2019 15:46

I agree - we need to accommodate transgender individuals in some way that doesn't deny them their identity.

What do you mean by their identity? Their identity as a transgender person?

SoupDragon · 04/07/2019 15:46

But if to all intents and purposes you are of the female gender, why shouldn't they have the rights of other females?

Because they are a different sex.

Thump · 04/07/2019 15:48

Or the third option @JacquesHammer Compete in the gender they identify as...

RedDogsBeg · 04/07/2019 15:48

What do you mean all intents and purposes?

SoupDragon · 04/07/2019 15:48

50% of uni places for males, 50% for females.

How do you see that working if very few males apply for a course? Only allow the same number of females on so the course is under subscribed?

Datun · 04/07/2019 15:48

But if to all intents and purposes you are of the female gender, why shouldn't they have the rights of other females?

Because 'gender' isn't criteria for the rights that women need. Women need rights based on their biological sex.

Women don't need rights based on whether they are masculine or feminine. They need rights based on whether or not they are female.

That's why sex is a protected characteristic under the equality act. Largely so women are not relentlessly disadvantaged due to their sex. Unfortunately, it doesn't eliminate sexism. But it tries.

Thump · 04/07/2019 15:48

Because they are a different sex

And?

RedDogsBeg · 04/07/2019 15:49

No, compete in the category for your biological sex.

SoupDragon · 04/07/2019 15:50

Compete in the gender they identify as...

Sport of segregated by sex, not gender. So XX play as women, XY play men. Perhaps that is what they should do for the hard of thinking. Rename sports by chromosomes. (Intersex causes a whole other issue of course)

SoupDragon · 04/07/2019 15:51

Because they are a different sex

And?

Bless. You're trying really hard aren't you?

Datun · 04/07/2019 15:51

Thump

Please define how you can use 'gender' as a criteria on which to base rights.

Datun · 04/07/2019 15:51

You could start with defining gender.

RedDogsBeg · 04/07/2019 15:51

Because they are a different sex

And?

Sex matters.
