To stay in a hotel without booking?

My husband is away with work in Manchester from yesterday to Thursday, I had planned on travelling tomorrow to stay with him and then come home together on Thursday.

I’m really worried about staying in the hotel he’s at with our baby as the hotel is only booked for him. Will the hotel say anything? I have looked for other hotels locally and can’t find anything that we can afford, especially once we say we have a baby with us 🙄.

Am I right to be worried or will the hotel staff not care?

You really need to check. Hopefully your husband already has checked and has told the hotel people you are going to join him. However please don't travel unless you are sure.

Doidontimmm · 01/07/2019 20:22

Is it a room only rate? If so no problem but please ask him to tell the hotel for insurance & fire purposes.

If they charge per person YABU yes!

Countrylifeornot · 01/07/2019 20:22

If it's a great big Hilton type place they probably won't even notice.
Obviously you wouldn't be on the guest register though if there were an emergency etc.
Have you a travel cot?

ps1991 · 01/07/2019 20:22

I know he hasn’t and isn’t planning on telling the hotel. His work are paying for the hotel so we don’t want it to get back to his company that I am joining him.

Phone and check. I stayed with my DH when he was away for work once and the hotel said as long as I paid for my breakfast separately it wasn't a problem.

Gatoadigrado · 01/07/2019 20:22

Why not just book it?

Screamanger · 01/07/2019 20:23

I have done this with my DH several times. He never mentions me and it’s never been a problem.

Gatoadigrado · 01/07/2019 20:24

Ah right I get you now... you want to stay there without paying. Very unreasonable, for the safety issues mentioned above apart from anything else

TheTrollFairy · 01/07/2019 20:24

I wouldn’t stay in somewhere I hadn’t booked. If the hotel notice, they’ll add the additional charge (if there is one) to the card which booked the room which means it’ll get back to his work

ps1991 · 01/07/2019 20:24

Yes we have a travel cot and we’re planning on using it. We don’t want to mention it and then they say that it’s extra money when realistically my baby and I won’t be taking up any more resources/rooms etc than my husband on his own. But now I’m worried if there is an emergency etc. 😭

Depends if its per room or per person. If its per person then surely all you have to do is speak to someone once at hotel and pay difference?

hammeringinmyhead · 01/07/2019 20:24

I've done it and not told the hotel. Not with a baby and no breakfast included!

MrsGrannyWeatherwax · 01/07/2019 20:25

Just depends if it’s a room rate or per person rate, Google the hotel to check

sussexman · 01/07/2019 20:25

I'd want to phone the hotel and see if (for example) a cot can be added to the room at no charge. I can't see hotel staff worrying about an extra person in the room . I can see them being worried about a baby staying in a non-babysafe room. Rightly.

ps1991 · 01/07/2019 20:25

There isn’t any breakfast included, it is just the room. on the website it says it is price per room.

Mouikey · 01/07/2019 20:26

Did this recently. Phone and check, you may have to pay an additional person supplement or for breakfast. But you shouldn’t need to pay for baby (even if they provide a travel cot for you)

Doidontimmm · 01/07/2019 20:27

Double the water/kettle boiling/teabags/loo rolls/guests next door being woken by a “non existent baby”, towels..... nope totally free!!!

Kerberos · 01/07/2019 20:27

Personally I would just do it. Chance of an emergency are so slim as to be negligible. What will you do whilst he's working though?

Gatoadigrado · 01/07/2019 20:29

If no breakfast included then it’ll either be no charge or a bit of a supplement for an extra adult. I can’t imagine a baby being an issue. But you really ought to tell them, just in case of fire alarm going off etc
Cannot believe you think it’s ok on the hotel management to smuggle a baby in rather than just have the decency to inform them and (possibly) have to pay the extra person supplement. Imagine if there was a fire/ bomb threat or something? However unlikely that might be it’s really not right to piss around with staff who have to manage such situations

ps1991 · 01/07/2019 20:29

I have plans while he’s working to see friends/explore Manchester and Liverpool, I’ll have the car so I won’t be in the hotel

Pipandmum · 01/07/2019 20:30

Well it’s morally wrong. You know it is because you are planning to sneak in (with baby and travel cot...?).
I wouldn’t dream of doing this, it doesn’t matter if it’s s huge chain or a small boutique hotel. You phone and say you will be joining and is there a charge. It’s either yes and you pay up or don’t go, or no then go. Will his company really care if you are joining him?

codenameduchess · 01/07/2019 20:31

What would the repercussions be if your husbands employer found out? They could quite easily take disciplinary action for him turning a business trip they have paid for into a family holiday.

The hotel may also charge per person, or have put him in a single room. What if there isn't space for a travel cot?

lyralalala · 01/07/2019 20:32

Look at the hotel website - if it’s price per room then it’s fine. If it’s price per person then it’s cheeky.

As long as you are not overloading the room with people the safety thing isnt a big issue. The fire brigade don’t work through a list in an emergency so they’ll not find one person in room 204 and stop looking. They search methodically.

lyralalala · 01/07/2019 20:34

Your bigger issue is his work. Do they have a policy?

Where DH works it’s a case of “if it doesn’t cost us then we don’t care” but other places may have different policies.

I know one company that don’t allow the expense of a room to be claimed if it’s shared with non employees

FredaFox · 01/07/2019 20:35

Agree to phone and check
The room will only be insured for 1 guest, if there's a fire they would only look for one body, declare it, the cost is likely to be minimal as pps have said
