AIBU to think Kate and Meghan could look just as good at half the price

This is neither a Kate nor a Meghan bashing thread.

I'm just wondering if they need to spend quite so much money on clothes or, as they are both gorgeous, could they spend much less and still look fab.

The dress Meghan wore to meet the baseball players is said to have cost £800 and it didn't seem all that to me - couldn't she have got something for, say, £250.

And before anyone asks, yes - I do have more important things to worry about but i just fancy a chat.

Here's Meghan's £800 dress by Stella McCartney

I think that the point of that, though, is that they are supporting British designers - those photos will be shown around the world.

HollowTalk · 30/06/2019 13:32

I doubt they pay for the clothes they wear.

StillCoughingandLaughing · 30/06/2019 13:34

To be honest I don’t think they could win whatever they did. If they buy high-end designer, they’re throwing away public money. If they buy cheaper or re-wear clothes, they’re not making the effort when they’re representing the company.

MeganRapinoe · 30/06/2019 13:36

Kate does - and apparently she won't accept discounts or gifts. Don't know about Meghan. Prince Charles used to pick up the tab for Kate's clothes except for overseas trips when the Foreign Office pays. Again, don't know about Meghan.

Yeah because Stella McCartney needs the cash and exposure!

I don't really care tbh. They both look lovely.

araiwa · 30/06/2019 13:59

This is neither a Kate nor a Meghan bashing thread.

Sure. I wish people would give it a rest tbh

ElspethFlashman · 30/06/2019 14:03

You know who supports British designers more? Beatrice and Eugenie. They almost always wear British and they really try to wear emerging smaller designers. Half the time you've never heard of the designer of their shoes or their hats. Some small business.

I wish it was like that across the board. Givenchy really don't need the exposure.

feelingverylazytoday · 30/06/2019 14:11

I agree with you actually OP. Though didn't Meghan wear a navy dress from M&S once?
Anyway, not personally directed to these 2 women, I think it's just as possible to look good in an outfit from the highstreet as a designer outfit. I think these 2 ladies would look fantastic in cheaper outfits, they both have very slim figures and wear their clothes well.

Seahorseshoe · 30/06/2019 14:14

I agree with you op. And I don't think they'd ever be criticised for rewearing or buying cheaper - I think most folk would see that as a positive.

If they are wearing expensive British designers, that sits easier with me than non-British designers.

Feelbad1 · 30/06/2019 14:15

so, where is Kate's expensive dress then ?

Yabbers · 30/06/2019 14:20

I’m sure a lot of people who have money could spend a lot less of it.

I could eat by just buying everything at LIDL or for a reduced price at the supermarket. In could buy all my clothes at a charity shop.

But, I don’t want to and I don’t see why anyone else should. Don’t forget Meghan is independently wealthy. Nobody questioned her choice of designer clothes when she was an actor. Why now?

Marilynmansonsthermos · 30/06/2019 14:22

I don't believe they pay for any of their outfits they wear at publicised events, they are obviously sent freebies to promote British brands. Agree that dress looks nothing special for £800 though.

Blitheringheights · 30/06/2019 14:29

I think kate did used to wear a lot of high street stuff, the day after her wedding didn’t she appear in a Zara dress? And has def had a topshop one.

The U.K. clothing high street is really suffering right now, they certainly good give various stores a shot in the arm by hearing their clothes. They certainly don’t have to but they could.

Blitheringheights · 30/06/2019 14:30

I thought the royal protocol has always been that they DON’T accept freebies?

EarlGreyOfTwinings · 30/06/2019 14:30

Why should they spend less if they can afford it? Go to most designer shops, the fabric, the cut, the service even really is something else.

Most designers must be dying to dress Kate - she is so tall and slim, she has the perfect body type for them. I am a big fan of Meghan, not saying that there's anything wrong with her at all, but Kate is just taller.

It also ensure they have exclusivity on a cut, or on a colour and don't end up wearing the same outfit as someone else. It happens, but it is very rare.

The probably spend a lot more on their body (face, and hair) that they do on clothes anyway. Most of us would too if we could afford it!

Blitheringheights · 30/06/2019 14:30

Sorry, should say certainly COULD not good.

SemperIdem · 30/06/2019 14:30

They could but don’t need to, so don’t. As already pointed out, Meghan is independent wealthy anyway.

MeganRapinoe · 30/06/2019 14:31

so, where is Kate's expensive dress then?

She has masses of them- try googling.

I linked to Meghan's because it was in the paper today and I thought it didn't look any special for the price.

The problem with the York princesses wearing British is that they nearly always look awful in their choice of clothes.

EarlGreyOfTwinings · 30/06/2019 14:31

Kate has been seen in high street clothes, same for Meghan, but not really for official visits (as little as I know, she might)

ElspethFlashman · 30/06/2019 14:31

Kates last dress cost about £450.

Her Ascot outfit was a blouse and skirt by a Lebanese designer. Total cost about $5000. Excluding the hat of course.

Prior to that was a Catherine Walker (price on application only).

Prior to that was a Casasola that cost $1050.

Prior to that was a day in country casuals with a £275 jacket.

Before that was Trooping the Colour and a new Alexander McQueen (price on application only)

Before that another Catherine Walker (price on application only)

And also another full length custom Alexander McQueen for the Trump dinner (price on application, loadsamoney)

That was JUST June.

Tinkety · 30/06/2019 14:32

Princess Anne has been pictured through the years wearing the same outfits that she first wore some 25 - 30 years previously so maybe they pay the extra money for (in theory) better quality in the hope that it lasts?

Both Duchesses are relatively new to their roles so maybe the cost of their outfits will be worth it if they are able to wear them multiple times over the next 30 years like Anne.

SandyY2K · 30/06/2019 14:33

If it's not a bashing thread, why mention their names?

Your comment could apply to anyone who wears designer clothes.... they could look just as good for less, but they chose to wear the clothes they do because they want to.

EarlGreyOfTwinings · 30/06/2019 14:35

Your comment could apply to anyone who wears designer clothes.

but most people who do are not funded by the tax payer. So I get the point.

Mamadothehump · 30/06/2019 14:38

So because they are attractive, they shouldn't wear expensive clothes? Would it be ok if they were considered unattractive?? What a bizarre question! They should wear whatever the hell they want!!!
