Reimbursed order but I’ve found it. Wrong to keep money?

I received notification that a package had been delivered. It hadn’t and I had proof (they’d taken a picture of a different front door to mine!).

I rang shop (a big international online trailer if that makes a difference) and they are refunding me the order (£175).

However yesterday evening, set out for little stroll and a few doors down - there’s my parcel!

Would you ring to update of keep? I know what the right thing to do is. I know what I would urge my children to do. I know this. But there is this slither of me that wants to keep the money.

I’m almost certain I’ll ring to update. Almost

OP posts:
PlatoAteMySnozcumber · 30/06/2019 21:27

A poster asked why it matters whether someone has money or not as theft is theft so I merely responded to that point. I agree it certainly doesn’t sound like the OP is experiencing exceptional hardship on the basis of the information she provided.

gubbsywubbsy · 30/06/2019 22:13

Fair enough... 😊

Notthetoothfairy · 30/06/2019 22:56

Once I was given the wrong amount of toy shop gift vouchers (it was pure chance that I even checked them as they were divided into envelopes for birthday party gifts). I didn’t get a thank you for pointing out the mistake when I phoned and just paid for the excess vouchers by card. I would have felt too guilty if I hadn’t done.

DarlingNikita · 01/07/2019 17:25

Weird update! Why would they have no idea?

EastCoastDamsel · 01/07/2019 17:38

You know it's wrong to keep both and not inform them...

bmteal · 01/07/2019 17:59

Dishonesty cannot be taken back.!
Notify the company would be the honest thing to do.!!!

MirandaGoshawk · 01/07/2019 18:04

You know the right thing to do, so do it. Tell them the parcel has turned up.

How do you bring up your children - "Be honest, except when you don't feel like it"?

You have the parcel so the money is not yours to keep. Full stop.

SoupDragon · 01/07/2019 18:06

She has told them!

Read the whole thread.

MirandaGoshawk · 01/07/2019 18:07

Sorry just seen update. Good!

Cockadoodledooo · 01/07/2019 18:08

The other day, the waiter in Frankie & Benny's cocked up ds's pudding order (as in the one that arrived wasn't what he ordered). Waitress apologised profusely, brought the correct one a matter of minutes later and insisted we keep the wrong one also at no extra charge (which was actually great as I hadn't ordered any pud Grin).
Anyway, my point is that even though it was their cock up, and it was a few quid at best, there's no way I'd have kept it without their permission. So absolutely OP I'd have to let them know I had actually received it and let them decide what happened next. And as for the drivel upthread about it only being rich people who have a conscience (paraphrasing massively) all I can say is it's bollocks. I've been on a combination of sick pay and massively reduced hours most of this year so I'm hardly what you'd call minted.

BummyKnocker · 01/07/2019 18:10

I'd be tempted too but I would tell them. Every time I have tried to benefit from this kind of mistake, something else goes wrong in my life, EVERY TIME.

TenAndFive · 01/07/2019 18:11

I would tell them.

MonstranceClock · 01/07/2019 18:15

I wouldn't tell them!

Pudz · 01/07/2019 18:19

Hi OP, are you the people whose parcels we keep getting? The postman keeps delivering parcels to us, the people have the same surname, house number, and partial name of road! I've hand delivered stuff back to them but the postman came knocking for an expensive looking item yesterday to take it back! It'd be amazing if it was you guys 😁

BrendasUmbrella · 01/07/2019 18:22

Well, you tried. And they sound incompetent, so if the refund does come through don't worry about it.

jarhead123 · 01/07/2019 18:25

I'd keep the item & the money

f0stercarer · 01/07/2019 18:26

keeping the money isnt theft. Taking the parcel is. As soon as you accepted the refund you have no claim to the goods. You have stolen the goods from outside another door. If you have taken the goods you just need to pay for them. It really is very simple.

MollyMinniesMum · 01/07/2019 18:26

Honesty is the best policy, it’ll bite you in the ass

Fresta · 01/07/2019 18:26

Well, if it was tax evading, well known big company I would definitely keep and consider it my share of what they owe!

MonstranceClock · 01/07/2019 18:31

I must live in a very scummy area because I have never in my life met anyone as moral as the people on here.

Pinkyyy · 01/07/2019 18:48

I wouldn't worry @MonstranceClock most of them are lying to sound good and moral to strangers on the internet.

SoupDragon · 01/07/2019 18:50

most of them are lying to sound good and moral to strangers on the internet.

Stop talking nonsense.

JacquesHammer · 01/07/2019 18:50

most of them are lying

Irony overload

MrJollyLivesNextDoor · 01/07/2019 18:51

Hopefully the person you spoke to most recently was wrong and you'll get a refund anyway. Win win 😀

Pinkyyy · 01/07/2019 18:57

I'd love to know why people say keeping it would be lying. What lie are you telling?
