Reimbursed order but I’ve found it. Wrong to keep money?

I received notification that a package had been delivered. It hadn’t and I had proof (they’d taken a picture of a different front door to mine!).

I rang shop (a big international online trailer if that makes a difference) and they are refunding me the order (£175).

However yesterday evening, set out for little stroll and a few doors down - there’s my parcel!

Would you ring to update of keep? I know what the right thing to do is. I know what I would urge my children to do. I know this. But there is this slither of me that wants to keep the money.

I’m almost certain I’ll ring to update. Almost

She's already phoned and told them!

I'm in a similar position, Hermes say they have delivered a parcel when they haven't and the company (Zara) just say "Package has been delivered" It's so frustrating! I know they didn't deliver the parcel as I have cameras and nothing was delivered that day. However, if I found the parcel, I would tell them

I had two sets of flat pack bedroom furniture delivered last year. I only ordered one. I didn’t realise until I had started unpacking the boxes to build the furniture and it became apparent that there were far too many pieces. Turned out that one of the mirrors was damaged in one set so was fortunately able to use the one from the other set without having to wait for a replacement. I rang the store and explained and the extras were collected the next day.

Hmm I can see it both ways. Not sure if I would have said anything. I’m very meticulous about checking receipts, refunds and change etc. You wouldn’t believe how many mistakes retailers make in their favour! Lots of people don’t check and end up out of pocket! So it works both ways!
I once had a £600 outdoor sofa for free even though I tried to do the right thing. They told me to dispose of it how I wanted. Confused

Cindefuckingrella · 03/07/2019 07:11

I also recently had £400 of gap clothes thrown over my side gate with no notification. Found them 2 days later after the heaviest rain of the year. Soaking boxes, bugs crawling around. Luckily clothes were ok. But a mess to sort out for me. But I did. They offered to replace the order but there was no time. Definitely works both ways!

LadyRannaldini · 03/07/2019 07:52

I would be inclined to tell them, in the future there may be a genuine need to claim for something more expensive and if your history has one claim already they may refuse.
Isn't there a law about taking a pecuniary advantage that covers this?

MadameFireweed · 03/07/2019 13:50

Slither. Grin

I reported it and told the company how sh* Hermes are - they sent me the wrong delivery photo of someone else's parcel, dumped at my workplace at an unmanned part of a random building. I agreed to repay the money to the smallish company.

Amibeingdaft81 · 05/07/2019 12:02

I hardly dare update! Grin

So after I tend to advise I did have the package and they said that no record I would be reimbursed anyway - I thought the matter was closed and my conscience clear.

Checked account this morning - they’ve reimbursed me!

What did I do? Ring a third time and be transferred here there and everywhere so I could pay back?
Nope!

I’ve booked a fab looking boat day trip for the children and I on our summer holiday that i thought was too expensive.

We will have a blast and no guilt. I tried. They failed. I win!

I would definitely have rung them - as you did, @Amibeingdaft81 - I think that is the honest and decent thing to do. I don't know if I would ring again - I probably would, just because I would feel bad if I didn't - but I can understand why you aren't going to ring again.

ChilliAndRiceIsVeryNice · 05/07/2019 12:45

You’ve definitely done your bit OP, you know you’ve done the decent thing and it’s not your job to chase around trying to get the company to function correctly so enjoy your trip :)

Threefaries · 05/07/2019 13:00

Amibeingdaft81, that’s a lovely update. You will enjoy the extra money guilt free.

I once had a large clothing order not turn up. Knocked on some neighbouring doors without any luck. Phoned the company and was reimbursed. A few weeks later the guy who’s garden backs onto the side of our property knocked at the door. He’d found the parcel behind some shrubs in his garden. I contacted the company and they told me to keep the goods.

browzingss · 05/07/2019 13:07

Whilst I understand your position, the order isn’t your property to keep anymore.

You’re going to have to worry about if they chase this up in the future as presumably they have evidence that they sent a refund for the order and confirmation (from you) that you since received the order.

Gth1234 · 05/07/2019 13:21

Keep a record of the phone call you made. You tried, I doubt they will bother further. Most companies have to work on "get it right first time". If they get it wrong, they rarely have time to go back and fix it, even if they realise - especially big companies.

VerbenaGirl · 13/07/2019 13:16

I'd just feel awful every time I used the goods!
