Reimbursed order but I’ve found it. Wrong to keep money?

I received notification that a package had been delivered. It hadn’t and I had proof (they’d taken a picture of a different front door to mine!).

I rang shop (a big international online trailer if that makes a difference) and they are refunding me the order (£175).

However yesterday evening, set out for little stroll and a few doors down - there’s my parcel!

Would you ring to update of keep? I know what the right thing to do is. I know what I would urge my children to do. I know this. But there is this slither of me that wants to keep the money.

I’m almost certain I’ll ring to update. Almost

Let us know what they say when you do

That's a bit presumptuous.

Darkcloudsandsunnydays · 30/06/2019 09:29

I notify them when this happens to me. Likewise I get a refund on a non delivery. This is how it works.

You are a thief looking for other thieves to back you up.

Myusernameisunique · 30/06/2019 09:32

I would just keep it and not say anything. But maybe I'm just a horrible person or a lot more honest than some other mumsnetters .

ilovesocks · 30/06/2019 09:32

I'd tell them. Even if I thought about keeping it I'd feel too guilty actually doing it.

midsomermurderess · 30/06/2019 09:33

It's theft.

poorbuthappy · 30/06/2019 09:33

I had a brand new iPhone 6 delivered to me the day they were released by EE. My neighbour signed for it not checking the name on the parcel.
It was not for me it was for a previous resident who we bought the house from 6 years previously.

It took 4 weeks, 2 specific trips to an EE shop and 8 phone calls to sort it out because they couldn't believe that they'd messed up. And they wanted me to pay return postage and insurance!
People were telling me to sell it on eBay.

It can massively inconvenience you!

SuperSara · 30/06/2019 09:35

Of course you should tell them!

I'm truly staggered at the number of people on here who think it's fine to just keep the item and the refund and say nothing.

The driver has made a mistake and you're taking advantage of it in an appalling way which will cost her/him money or potentially the job. The fact that the company may say it's not worth pursuing with the delivery co' to find out where it went doesn't mean no one's bothered. It means they will claim what they can from the delivery co, rather than investigate further, and the delivery co' will take their loss up with the (poorly paid) driver.

If you went into a shop to buy something and the cashier unwittingly gave you several £20 notes as change instead of £5 notes, would you keep that too, knowing the cashier would be in deep shit for it?

Itssosunny · 30/06/2019 09:38

Of course you should tell the seller. They have been very kind to issue an immediate refund. The delivery person will probably be paying for it from his/her wages.

endofthelinefinally · 30/06/2019 09:39

Of course you should tell them.
The delivery person could have their wages docked or even lose their job.

minesasaugagesupper · 30/06/2019 09:45

If you keep it and don't tell them then you are a thief. It is that simple.

SunsetBunny · 30/06/2019 09:46

If this had happened to me, I’m sure I would have recognised that the door in the picture was on the same street. Surely it would have looked familiar enough for you to think that it would be worth checking with neighbours?

Pinkyyy · 30/06/2019 09:47

The delivery person could have their wages docked or even lose their job.

Wouldn't that be a shame. Considering how much effort they put into making sure that doesn't happen.

Chickenwing · 30/06/2019 09:52

Similar thing happened to me with amazon, I told them and they let me keep the refund as a good will gesture.

nokidshere · 30/06/2019 09:53

On the couple of occasions when I've had dual or missing deliveries which have later turned up, I've always been told to keep it when I rang to inform them. Apparently the cost of collecting and processing it isn't worth it in most cases.

But I would never just keep it and not tell them. I don't think that makes me a martyr.

HopelessLayout · 30/06/2019 09:54

I would tell them. I recently found out that it’s the delivery driver who loses out as they have to pay it out of their wages!

How difficult is it to check that you're at the correct address before leaving a parcel on a doorstep?

Although I'd probably tell them, part of me thinks the delivery driver should find another occupation if he is that incompetent.

Overmaars · 30/06/2019 09:56

@Fiydwi you can not compare John Lewis, Amazon and Tesco. Tesco makes billions of pounds in profits which goes to shareholders. Amazon dodges paying tax in the UK, treats staff awfully and makes billions. John Lewis only makes millions, which is nothing in the retail market and makes them vulnerable in a tough year, and gives a large proportion of its profits back to its staff.

Anyway, keeping stuff you've been inadvertently given is theft OP. They will probably let you keep it anyway, but at least your conscience would be clear.

FamilyOfAliens · 30/06/2019 10:00

It’s not about whose fault it is. It’s about how honest you are, OP.

I agree with JacquesHammer on this:

Lack of honesty is a revolting trait.

Overmaars · 30/06/2019 10:01

HopelessLayout it's difficult because they have so little time to find the right address, park, ring the doorbell, read the 'instructions if they are out' notice, possibly leave with neighbour etc. These people deliver tens of packages a day, not just five or six. Would you like your wages docked if you made an occasional mistake when under huge pressure? Whatever you say, I bet you wouldn't.

Freshstart40 · 30/06/2019 10:02

Similar happened to me, I told the company and because of my honestly they allowed me to keep the package and refund. Was a much smaller amount than yours though.

Would you enjoy using what you ordered knowing you hadn't paid for it? I ask as I considered for a moment not telling the company but realised every time I wore the item I'd feel bad!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 30/06/2019 10:02

I don't agree with the concept of karma but I do agree with bingbong about the 'balance being restored'. It always does seem to be that way - particularly with money and restitution.

Relationships not at all.

... that 'karma's a bitch' trope makes me cringe every time I see it spouted out here though.

yulet · 30/06/2019 10:03

It amazes me that someone would even ask. Just let them know.

Nanny0gg · 30/06/2019 10:03

Do you know the pressure they're under to deliver for absolute shit wages? It's no wonder mistakes happen.

PotsOfJoy · 30/06/2019 10:05

Tell them, 100%.

Itssosunny · 30/06/2019 10:05

yulet

It amazes me that someone would even ask

I wanted to say the same. And it doesn't how big the company is.

Pinkyyy · 30/06/2019 10:06

I'm afraid that's not my problem @Nanny0gg. Many people's jobs are stressful but that's no excuse to do them poorly.

Waitresses are not very well paid, would you be okay if they just plonked your food somewhere and sent you to go and look for it?
