Reimbursed order but I’ve found it. Wrong to keep money?

Amibeingdaft81 · 30/06/2019 06:15

I received notification that a package had been delivered. It hadn’t and I had proof (they’d taken a picture of a different front door to mine!).

I rang shop (a big international online trailer if that makes a difference) and they are refunding me the order (£175).

However yesterday evening, set out for little stroll and a few doors down - there’s my parcel!

Would you ring to update of keep? I know what the right thing to do is. I know what I would urge my children to do. I know this. But there is this slither of me that wants to keep the money.

I’m almost certain I’ll ring to update. Almost

OP "Should I steal?"
Some MN's "Yes"
The justification being used by some people here is astonishing and if you are honest you are a martyrHmm
You should be bloody ashamed of yourselves.

MajesticWhine · 30/06/2019 08:53

Tell them. You should get some compensation for it not being delivered. It's tempting but definitely tell them. I agree with what someone said earlier. Honesty makes the world a better place. It doesn't matter which company it is and very Confused at anyone who thinks it does.

m0therofdragons · 30/06/2019 08:54

We had amazon deliver 2dvd players so we called and told them as we'd only ordered one. They told us to keep the extra one.

LondonJax · 30/06/2019 08:55

Ring the company and explain. As some people have said this will go back to the delivery driver.

I run a small business. If my items go missing I get compensated by my courier company. I don't swallow the loss - the nondelivery wasn't my fault so why should I. I can't imagine the likes of Amazon, Tesco, Zara's or whoever taking the hit on a £175 item. That would be down to the delivery firm. And many of their drivers are contracted.

Apart from anything else I wouldn't be able to sleep at night knowing I was a thief.

WonkoTheSane42 · 30/06/2019 08:59

Tell them otherwise the delivery driver could lose his job.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 30/06/2019 09:01

OP, think how you would feel if the driver has his salary reduced by £175 to make up for this loss. You must be honest.

scubadive · 30/06/2019 09:03

Of course you should, it’s a genuine delivery error. It’s theft and also if people do this prices will go up,

Pinkyyy · 30/06/2019 09:04

Perhaps if the driver delivered the parcel properly he wouldn't have to pay for it. He clearly doesn't care about losing the money enough to check he's done got the right house, so why should the OP?

Fernie6491 · 30/06/2019 09:05

@ounce
And it's sliver, not slither. I don't normally point out mistakes in a post because people get all arsey, but 'sliver' is on the critically endangered list and I'm fighting keep it in the language
Thank you - from a fellow pedant!

JustOneShadeOfGrey · 30/06/2019 09:05

I can’t believe the responses here condoning stealing! How can any of you say “keep it”? Would you not punish your children for stealing?

Theft is theft, whether it’s £1 or £1,000,000.

Youngandfree · 30/06/2019 09:06

Similar thing happened to me and a company sent me a refund, it had been 3 weeks and the items never showed up. I rang and cancelled and they refunded me...literally the next day the package arrived!!!i rang them to tell them and they left me have it for free. But I wouldn’t have felt comfortable not calling!!

hazandduck · 30/06/2019 09:06

I still don’t get people defending the delivery driver...they delivered it to the wrong door! So should be reprimanded at the least!

NoSauce · 30/06/2019 09:08

I can’t believe you’re even thinking of not saying anything.

Whose house was the parcel left at? The company will probably be in touch with them to ask what they’ve done with it.

Beamur · 30/06/2019 09:09

I would tell them.
Anything else is theft.

NoSauce · 30/06/2019 09:09

It doesn’t matter that it was delivered to the wrong door. The OP has the parcel.

Karwomannghia · 30/06/2019 09:10

Tell them. You might still get it for free as compensation for it being left at the wrong place. It’s lucky that you did find it.

EdWinchester · 30/06/2019 09:11

I’d tell them. No pleasure to be had in dishonesty.

BrokenWing · 30/06/2019 09:11

I would call them and tell them I found it. I know they would never find out, but my integrity is worth more that £175.

Integrity once lost is hard to recover, even if noone else ever knew about your theft how could you tell your children not to steal without knowing you are a hypocrite, how could you comment on a local crime when you are a petty criminal?

Tell them otherwise the delivery driver could lose his job.

The delivery driver will still be in trouble as he still left at the wrong door, but that is not a reason not to call.

Sportsnight · 30/06/2019 09:12

I had this, the only difference being that I found it months later In the front garden. It had been tucked so well into the hedge that it was only uncovered when we trimmed it. I didn’t let the company know, but, the parcel was ruined by repeated rain and the contents had to go in the bin.

nuttynutjob · 30/06/2019 09:16

bingbongnoise

I lost a wallet around 12 years ago with inside my driving license and £250 rent money.
I cried for days and genuinely was stressed out on how I will pay my rent as I was poorly paid as a carer.

My only saving grace was I was paid weekly so I worked 60 hours for two weeks.

wowfudge · 30/06/2019 09:17

Tell them. Keeping it and getting a refund is theft. I'm wondering why they haven't offered to send another of whatever it is though?

Slither is the verb which describes how a snake, for example, moves. A sliver is a small, narrow piece of something cut off a larger piece, e.g. cake or cheese.

lotusbell · 30/06/2019 09:21

I once bought a tshirt from a small independent company and they sent the wrong one. Not only did she then send me the correct one, she'd me to keep the wrong one but that was their error, not a delivery company. Amazon used to be quite good at reimbursing or telling you to keep the item. I once ordered 2 books and the delivery guy left a card to say the parcel was with a neighbour except it was an empty house across the road with no sign of life! Turns out he'd written the wrong house number down, which hadn't occurred me. That neighbour turned up days later with my books, by which point I'd contacted Amazon and they'd resent the order. They told me to keep the extra ordered which was then sold on ebay. I'd get in touch, I'm too honest!

LemonTreeLemon · 30/06/2019 09:24

Another vote here to tell them.

Let us know what they say when you do.

phoenixrosehere · 30/06/2019 09:25

Something similar happened with my in-laws except it was a miscommunication between them and the company sent a second pram. Instead of simply telling the company, they gave the almost £500 pram to my husband. Didn’t find out til months later that they did this and I was not impressed nor thought it was funny and was actually a bit hurt.

Ring them up. Who knows, they may let you keep it or give a voucher. At least, you wouldn’t have it on your conscious.

Meyoumeanmeh · 30/06/2019 09:26

I would tell them, I was recently overpaid for an insurance claim so I phoned and told them. It would have been nice if they had said I could keep it for being honest but £300 is a lot of money.
The woman on the phone was gobsmacked that I had phoned to tell them.

A sliver is a small, narrow piece of something cut off a larger piece, e.g. cake or cheese. second post this week that sliver has been mentioned, it isn’t a word I hear often these days
