To wear tampons only?

Rowennaravenclaw · 29/06/2019 17:38

I lived in fear of TSS as a teen. I was religious about wearing a pad for at least 8 hours a day and never wore tampons at night.

At some point, probably in my early 20s, I stopped thinking about it and put convenience first. Now tampons is all I ever use, one after the other, as I hate the feeling of pads.

Obviously it’s a risk, but how unusual am I in this?
Has anyone ever had TSS from a tampon?

And before everyone tells me to get a mooncup, I do plan on trying one soon.

You're fine to wear tampons continuously whilst you have your period as long as you change them frequently. You don't have to have a break with towels.

”Obviously it’s a risk“

Is it?!! Confused

Utini · 29/06/2019 17:44

I've used tampons only for about 20 years, I thought that was normal, as long as they're not left in for more than 8 hours.

Rowennaravenclaw · 29/06/2019 17:44

NHS webpage says you should alternate tampons and pads to reduce risk of TSS.
And I'm sure that the leaflets in the boxes used to say to have at least 8 hours without a tampon per day? I don't know if they still recommend that, I haven't read the leaflets for years.

I don't wear tampons to bed, as I dont want the risk of TSS.

Allyg1185 · 29/06/2019 17:48

Tampons is all I've ever used since I was about 14 I'm now 33. Can't stand pads!

JustDanceAddict · 29/06/2019 17:50

I never use pads, I keep a tampon in for 8 hrs at night. Have done for 30 years. I hate the feeling of pads and excepting post-party I haven’t used them since I was 18.
If you are worried you can use a mooncup but I never got on with one.

iolaus · 29/06/2019 17:51

I've actually known someone have one in for a stupid length of time (we are not talking hours or days) Noone could believe she didn't get TSS

However I wouldn't recommend it - she was extremely lucky

JustDanceAddict · 29/06/2019 17:51

*post-partum

ShinyMe · 29/06/2019 17:52

I used nothing but tampons from the age of about 14 til I got my mooncup at... 36? 37? They're fine, just change them regularly.

stucknoue · 29/06/2019 18:00

I use them alone. Just change as soon as you wake

Passthecherrycoke · 29/06/2019 18:01

It’s completely Normal to do that. TSS is very rare

ethelfleda · 29/06/2019 18:03

I used them regularly until I got my mooncup.
I find my mooncup much better than tampons, tbh. I can’t believe I didn’t get one sooner!

YouJustDoYou · 29/06/2019 18:03

Tss is rare, just change them regularly.

OralBElectricToothbrush · 29/06/2019 18:05

Before I switched to a mooncup, all I ever used was tampons, from my very first period. YANBU.

eurochick · 29/06/2019 18:08

I only used tampons for most of my menstruating years. Swapped to a moon up for a few years. The only time a mooncup a leaks for me is overnight so I've always worn tampons there. No issues.

Waveysnail · 29/06/2019 18:10

Virtually never used pads, always wore tampons, now use mooncup

DixieFlatline · 29/06/2019 18:10

NHS webpage says you should alternate tampons and pads to reduce risk of TSS.

I've just had a look and it says it is something which can reduce the risk of developing TSS. Which is obvious, really. But it doesn't say you should or must do it.

MustardScreams · 29/06/2019 18:19

The only time I’ve ever used pads is after I gave birth, and I hated using them then! Never had any issues, even when (TMI) I put a tampon in drunk at the end of my period and totally forgot about it until 2 days later 🤢 I was absolutely fine, did pong though.

supersop60 · 29/06/2019 18:21

I wore tampons all through my periods until I was 40. After DC I used pads because tampons never felt as comfortable as they had before.

firstimemamma · 29/06/2019 18:22

At school I was taught that tampons all the way is fine as long as you use just a pad at least once in a 24-hour period.

Beebeezed · 29/06/2019 18:22

I kid you not, a friend of mine had a tampon in for weeks. Weeks. She —drunkenly— thought that she took a tampon out, so put a new one in and so had TWO tampons in. Weeks later, she started to feel —and smell— weird down there and had a feel... and realised. Blush

Anyway, not much point to that story with regards to the thread just wanted to share Grin

Pinkfinkle · 29/06/2019 18:23

TSS is rare but if you sleep for longer than 8 hours I’d wear a pad to bed personally.

I really hate tampons. I’ve had four DC but I still can’t get to grips with inserting them right, it always hurts.

lazymare · 29/06/2019 20:49

Haven't used pads ever and I'm 45. Except mat pads after babies/

Lemonadedrinker99 · 29/06/2019 21:01

Towels are gross- like wearing a nappy. Tampons all the way for me.
