Byebyefriend · 28/06/2019 10:31

What?

MyOpinionIsValid · 28/06/2019 10:31

I was quite surprised there werent threads about it yesterday when the news broke.

It is beyond unreasonable

Vilanelle · 28/06/2019 10:36

And the fact the shooter got off scott free

SerenDippitty · 28/06/2019 10:37

And the shooter will not be charged with anything.

Metalhead · 28/06/2019 10:37

Words fail me

Wheresthebeach · 28/06/2019 10:37

OMG - and I thought nothing more could shock me. Words fail me.

MarieIVanArkleStinks · 28/06/2019 10:39

The 'developed' world.

You could have fooled me.

Stressedout10 · 28/06/2019 10:41

I'm speechless. 😱
This is just so wrong 🤬
Only a man could think of this 😣

SerendipityJane · 28/06/2019 10:41

Whenever people blather on about "the law" and how "criminals don't deserve human rights" it's worth remembering cases like this which show that "the law" is simply what the government (or state in this case) says it is.

No more.
No less.

I'm not an anarchist ... but I'm also not going to blindly do something (or not do something) just because it's "the law".

Ironically it was in the US that I saw a bumper sticker:

The people that hid Anne Frank were breaking the law
The people that killed her were obeying it

LenoVentura · 28/06/2019 10:41

I couldn't comprehend this story when I read it yesterday. I thought I was being thick and not reading it properly, but no. It's utterly utterly terrifying. There is no way I would go there and I'm past menopause. I can't imagine what it must be like for the women who live there and see this sort of thing happening.

Isatis · 28/06/2019 10:43

I was quite surprised there werent threads about it yesterday when the news broke.

There are at least two other threads on this on MN.

HippyTrails · 28/06/2019 10:45

I believe it's something to do with the fact that the pregnant woman attacked the other person thus causing the other person to shoot in self defense.

It is wtf though

Nesssie · 28/06/2019 10:49

Its OTT but I kinda agree she should be charged with child endangerment/neglect or something though as apparently she attacked first and the other woman acted in self defence.

So she is technically responsible for her babies death.

Ounce · 28/06/2019 10:51

Think this through. Go on, really try to think this through...

Nesssie · 28/06/2019 10:53

I'm not sure the exact charge they could/should use, but in a State where they consider the rights of the unborn child, causing an action whereby the baby is killed, I understand why they would be considering this.

If someone else kills a pregnant mother, and the baby dies, they get charged for the murder of the child.

Jaffacakeobsessed · 28/06/2019 10:56

This is horrifying - as are the implications.

PopWentTheWeasel · 28/06/2019 10:58

Is the US didn't routinely have guns, this would just have been a punch up between two women over a man, and everyone would have walked away with a bit of dented pride. Because she exacerbated it, and the other woman had a gun, we are now in this ridiculous situation.

How far will they go to protect unborn babies from their mothers' actions?

Zilla1 · 28/06/2019 11:00

Stand your ground has had some odd consequences.

Quartz2208 · 28/06/2019 11:01

The US is hot on the concept of acting in self defence (look at how they act in burglarly cases etc). Coupled with the idea of someone dying as a result of a felony that is where it comes from. The right to bear arms is strong

The major difference is here we would not consider the fetus to be alive unless it was born and had a breath (there is case law on it when men deliberately do it). That is where the anti abortion comes into play when do you consider a baby to be alive.

SerendipityJane · 28/06/2019 11:03

I wonder when this will hit the UK ? Since we're already going backwards anyway with womens rights, I imagine a lot of things will end up on the baggage train from the past.

IIRC Jeremy Hunt is already talking about reducing the time limit for terminations ?

Combine this news, with the running thread on how poor women don't deserve any children, and we may as well relabel our new blue passports: UK: Gilead theme park

On the plus side, there will be a lot of jobs building gallows and washing the blood off the walls.

NurseButtercup · 28/06/2019 11:03

Confused

Being charged with aggravated assault against the other women - I'd agree with that.

Being charged with manslaughter because the other person purposely aimed a gun and shot at her pregnant stomach which killed her unborn child? No no no that's twisted logic.

The person that held & aimed and discharged the deadly weapon should be held accountable for the death of the unborn child and charged with manslaughter.
