Oven chips

noenergy · 27/06/2019 20:47

Recently got rid of my deep fat fryer so would like recommendations of the best oven chips, I like my chips to be chunky and have never really been keen on oven chips especially ones that seem to be quite heavily coated.

Nothing that's covered in beef dripping as they need to be veggie friendly.

Lidl do some really nice posh chunky ones, ive forgotten ehat theyre called but its their posh range in a black bag.

BobbyBrewstersMagicTorch · 27/06/2019 20:49

You could just cut up potatoes into chunky chips, spray with oil, sprinkle with salt and bake in the oven.

Much cheaper, and much nicer.

lljkk · 27/06/2019 20:50

Just buy each sort in Sainsbury's until you find one you like?
We probably have low standards coz we like the supermarket own.

What kind of oil did you use in your deep fat fryer, may I ask?

TheChineseChicken · 27/06/2019 20:50

We always make our own. You can get a cutter that makes crinkle cut ones, which are even better

ParrotsForLife · 27/06/2019 20:51

Ooh home made potato wedges sprinkled with Chinese 5 spice are food of the gods!!

Clawdy · 27/06/2019 20:52

McCains Triple Cooked Gastro Chips are delicious, best I've tasted.

SkydivingKittyCat · 27/06/2019 20:52

McCain chunky chips are the chip of choice in our house

StoorieHoose · 27/06/2019 20:52

McCain's Home Fries

Or gastro chips but they give off a lot of fat so have to be out on a tray with side but they are delicious

Baritriwsahys · 27/06/2019 20:53

I buy fresh over chips. More expensive that frozen but much nicer.

hedgehoglurker · 27/06/2019 20:53

Aunt Bessie crinkles are my favourite oven chips. (Although a little extra oil often makes the others reasonable.)

SushiForAmateurs · 27/06/2019 20:54

Home made are the best.

Alternatively, I think it's a trial and error thing, OP.

VioletDaisies · 27/06/2019 20:54

Aldi homestyle, they are the only ones that cook properly in our oven without burning on the outside before the inside is done.

70sWitch · 27/06/2019 20:55

Albert Bartlett rooster chips. Best oven chips I've found and they do chunky chips

Divgirl2 · 27/06/2019 20:55

Just make wedges from potatoes. Oven chips all have a slight taste of disappointment.

HeronLanyon · 27/06/2019 20:55

Waitrose essential french cut. Lovely if you like thin fries.

sneakypinky · 27/06/2019 20:56

You need an air fryer in your life.

AppleKatie · 27/06/2019 20:56

Sainsburys taste the difference cooked hotter and longer than the packet suggests.

FamilyOfAliens · 27/06/2019 20:56

What’s your AIBU?

Chip potatoes then put in a freezer bag. Toss in olive oil with a little salt. Spread on baking parchment on an oven tray and cook for about 35 minutes on about 220 degrees. Perfect!

noenergy · 27/06/2019 20:59

I know I shouldn't be using AIBU.
Just looking for quick suggestions.

Was thinking of investing In an air fryer.

I used to use vegetable oil in my chip pan for the poster that was asking.

Really don't want to have to work my way through loads of different ones before I find ones I like.

My air fryer makes lovely wedges from fresh potatoes! Still to master the humble chip though.

MissConductUS · 27/06/2019 21:01

These are my favorites but you probably can't get them:

www.alexiafoods.com/

After reading this thread I think I'm going to have to try homemade. Russets are the potato of choice for chips, at least here.

lljkk · 27/06/2019 21:04

Thanks. I didn't know ordinary veg oil worked in a fryer.
Veg-oil fried chips when you buy take-away, always means hydrogenated oils. Which I never want. So I actively seek out the lard-fried ones.

BuzzShitbagBobbly · 27/06/2019 21:04

Whatever you buy, a little sprinkling of salt and pepper and some paprika always makes them tastier. Look for anything with "home fries" as a description as they generally have some type of coating on.

(I would have said the gastro chips as well but they're drippping so no good for you Sad)

Itwontrainallthetime · 27/06/2019 21:04

We have been searching for years for nice frozen chips.

Home made are nice, cut up a potato and sprinkle some oil on them they do take a while to cook though and probably even longer if you wanted thick ones.
I have read that you can boil for a few mins first and then oven cook them, but too much of a faff for me after peeling and cutting the potatoes.
I once cut them too thin and with too much oil they were like roast potatoes nice but not very healthy.

The closest one I've found to fried chips are McCain's Gastro Chips they are gorgeous. Bit pricey for a small bag but worth it.

Others are McCain's crinkle home fries big bag ,but I find sometimes they don't taste the same as other times I've had them.
