That makes you a bit of an idiot then.

Nobody's an idiot. We just all have different ideas as to what constitutes 'important'.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 28/06/2019 11:15

This is the first time that I've heard this nickname too. Does anyone know if it's a new marketing gimmick?

I've been following them across the world for over 15 years. I've always known them as The Lionesses. The name has started to get touted around much more of late though.

Me and my friend were the only two travelling England supporters at one time. Now it's massive Smile

Come on England; make me proud Smile

ShatnersWig · 28/06/2019 11:17

@NiceLegs No, I'll stick with someone who thinks knowing the name of the captain of a football team is something that "really matters" in a politician is a bit of an idiot.

We don't employ politicians to know the names of a captain of a football team. We employ them to run the country. I don't watch football, I enjoy tennis, but I don't think it "really matters" if a LibDem MP doesn't know who won the doubles final at Queens last week.

The80sweregreat · 28/06/2019 11:21

I'm glad they are doing well.
I hope they win the whole thing.

NiceLegsShameAboutTheFace · 28/06/2019 11:23

Women's football isn't gripping

Oh is really is! As is the cricket too Smile

thecatsthecats · 28/06/2019 11:38

I like that the women's football is less focused on idolising players or valorizing individuals. They're a team, and one that is behaving as a team, and performing as one. The crowds seem far less boorish - I've realised how much nicer it is to watch football without the horrible background shouting you get in mens' matches!

I feel similarly about tennis, except that I like that it's about individuals, not nationalities. I couldn't give a fig about supporting a country, seeing elite athletes one on one out thinking and out playing each other is great.

Andy Murray really pissed me off in his early days, because he played massively to the home crowd (and wasted a huge amount of energy in celebrating then lost!). Made it into a nasty, nationalistic arena instead of being about enjoying top athletes doing their thing!

Birdie6 · 28/06/2019 11:48

I think it shows an absolute lack of interest in anything that isnt Westminster. Crap

But that is what they are elected for. Anything else they know about is a personal preference or it's something to do with their job, ie running the country. I don't personally care about footballers and I couldn't care less if my elected leaders know little about them. .

Fair enough. I'm not in the business of calling other people 'idiots'. But, then again .... I am not you Smile

Numbersaremything · 28/06/2019 12:39

thecats the fans seem to be more like a rugby crowd really. Slightly more grown up & fun!

trackingmedown · 28/06/2019 12:46

I didn’t know despite reading one digital broadsheet newspaper every day and a couple of traditional papers as well. I couldn’t tell you the name of the male England captain either. I would say it’s because my mind is on higher things but the truth is I have zero interest in sport of any sort.

ShatnersWig · 28/06/2019 13:03

Dear NiceLegs

Didn't actually call anyone an idiot, though. Merely a bit of one.

Yours pedantically,
ShatnersWig OBE, JCB, KFC

Indeed you didn't. But, there again, I never accused you of having done so. I merely advised that I wasn't in the business of calling other people idiots Blush

Yours in pedantry,
NiceLegs, TWAT

That's Tuesdays, Wednesdays And Thursdays. It's a great working pattern.

Fuck! Should I even be in the office today? Shock

pointythings · 28/06/2019 13:10

Who cares? It's football. It isn't their job to know sports trivia.

ShatnersWig · 28/06/2019 13:21

Dear NiceLegs TWAT

I love you. You share my sense of daftness. Will you marry me?

Yours,

I love you. You share my sense of daftness. Will you marry me?

YES. Because you sound like fun. And .... I've never had a proposal before Blush

Frantically emails friends and colleagues to tell them to go buy a hat Grin

Fibbke · 28/06/2019 15:29

Aw. I feel like I've brought you together with my controversial sports trivia/politics musing ❤

This is bonkers. I have no idea. I don’t like football. I don’t care about football. And I don’t care what Jo Swinson knows about football either.

NeverTwerkNaked · 28/06/2019 16:39

Why should they have to be interested in football. I had no idea what the lionesses are let alone any names. I couldn't tell you any male footballers either for that matter

zweifler1 · 28/06/2019 17:20

I get that people are annoyed that women's football isn't as popular as it should be but the worst way to get people to love things is to hector and snipe about it.

Let people discover how great it is rather than getting people's backs up with this obviously nonsensical faux outrage.

dreichuplands · 28/06/2019 17:25

If it makes you feel better OP this isn't about women's football I have no idea about the captains of any major UK sporting teams.
I also have no issue with other people enjoying sports I just don't want this rather random enjoyment to be used to judge politicians.

BackforGood · 28/06/2019 18:13

It is the weirdest criteria to judge politician on that I have come across in a long, long time.

Fibbke · 28/06/2019 18:17

Well clearly itv don't agree as they chose it as a question!

OP posts:
tomtom1999xx · 28/06/2019 18:20

I didn’t even know who the lionesses were let alone the captain.

Yabu.

WindsweptEgret · 29/06/2019 08:06

I knew there was a women's team but thought they were just the England team? Lionesses makes me think of the Lioness clubs, like the Lions clubs, the community organisation.
