I read an online newspaper every day and know nothing about football because I have hidden the sports section. It made me very happy when I discovered I could do that.

AquaPris · 27/06/2019 18:36

I didn't know that was their name?

AquaPris · 27/06/2019 18:37

And I WORK at the newspaper and I still didn't know that. They're just referred to as the Women's England team

Norma27 · 27/06/2019 18:40

My friend’s sister is one of the lionesses, but I still don’t know the names of any of the others.
Not really a political necessity but nice if they do know I suppose.

derxa · 27/06/2019 18:41

I'm interested in football but I'm Scottish and sick of this 'Lionesses' thing being shoved down my throat by the BBC. I might vote Lib Dem. I want to know what Jo Swinson has to say about politics.

DaisiesAreOurSilver · 27/06/2019 18:43

YABU to think that sport matters.

Fibbke · 27/06/2019 19:02

GrinGrin what newspaper?

2009 called, they want their method of receiving news back please

Well clearly it's quite an effective method as I know something about the current news that noone else on this thread seems to know 👌

You are right OP, the old ways are the best. I bet if you read the news printed on stone tablets each day you'd be able to name the whole team.

Have a big, shiny medal. No-one else cares. Plus of course, they probably also know plenty of things you don't know. In the knowledge stakes, I'm not sure that knowing a footballer's name is anything to be particularly proud of.

Fibbke · 27/06/2019 19:15

I do read it on my ipad rather than papyrus if that helps. I find most current affairs, including sport, very interesting.

OP posts:
Lockheart · 27/06/2019 19:16

Sports isn't really news though is it.

I'd bet she probably can't name the nation's favourite poem or the longest motorway in Britain either.

The horror.

Fibbke · 27/06/2019 19:23

Sports isn't really news though is it

Confused
OP posts:
QuizzlyBear · 27/06/2019 19:25

I'd rather they know about the political state of the country really...

Lockheart · 27/06/2019 19:26

It's not @Fibbke. That's why it has its own section on the programmes and in papers. News AND sport (AND weather AND markets etc etc which also aren't news).

It's not news INCLUDING sport.

GottaGetUp · 27/06/2019 19:33

Ahhh, a classic of the genre.

Yes, YABU
No I’m not!

Wifeynomore · 27/06/2019 19:36

I read a newspaper everyday and I have never heard of the Lionesses. I have no interest in sports.

Imagine that OP, a world where what is interesting to you, isn't interesting to someone else....

Floralnomad · 27/06/2019 19:37

I read the sports news ( online) everyday , still couldn’t name anybody in the England ladies team , and would struggle with naming more than one or two in the men’s team . There are other sports and a World Cup actually being held in this country at the moment .

derxa · 27/06/2019 19:54

I've been listening to the build up on R5L but I still can't remember the captain's name. Lucy Bronze is playing and Phil neville is the manager.
Unfortunately they're not memorable people in the team.

derxa · 27/06/2019 19:57

a World Cup actually being held in this country at the moment I listened to the whole of the Pakistan New Zealand match on radio yesterday. It was gripping. Women's football isn't gripping.

NameChange9854 · 27/06/2019 20:27

You're being ridiculous.

I couldn't give two hoots how interested in sport a party leader is for a start. Even beyond that, Women's football is still niche and I wouldnt expect most British sports fans to know who the England Women's team's captain is (nor, as a football fan, do I think the role of captain is very important; I couldn't tell you the current captain of any of the home nations teams, men's or women's).

Honestly, it about as important as knowing the goings-on in Love Island. Get some perspective.

CherryPavlova · 27/06/2019 20:29

No never heard of them and dislike all things football. Not knowing would be a bonus for me; I’d far rather they understood the financial deficit most NHS trust are dealing with.

Magi84 · 27/06/2019 22:02

Right just accidentally seen the closing parts of coverage of the "lionesses" football match (mind you still don't know the captain's name) so obviously not fit to be proposed as leader of some political part!!

OddHoleySocks · 27/06/2019 22:10

Sports is a very specific subset of news, that not everyone is going to spend their time on.

I think that politicians have more important things to concern themselves with than the capain of sports teams from a different country, tbh. Looks like most of mumsnet agree on this one too.

RedRedBluee · 27/06/2019 22:11

Why on Earth is football relevant to politics??
It’s not.
