They aren't known as the LibDims for nothing

ItsGoingTibiaK · 27/06/2019 11:31

@Fibbke

I think it shows an absolute lack of interest in anything that isnt Westminster. Crap.

I'm interested in lots of things. Football isn't one of them. I had literally never heard of The Lionesses, never mind know who their captain is. Does that make me crap?

Do you have a list of everything that a politician should know to demonstrate sufficient outside-Westminster interest?

Northernparent68 · 27/06/2019 11:35

As has been said some people do nt like football, and some football fans do nt like women’s football.

If you read a newspaper every day you would know!

Maybe I am just better informed about the news than our politicians 🤔

I'd prefer it to certain politicians who claim they support Aston Villa when it's painfully obvious they don't even watch football.

Halloumimuffin · 27/06/2019 11:42

If you read a newspaper every day you would know!

I've watched all their matches and I didn't even know.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 27/06/2019 11:44

If I read a newspaper and there was a football article I would simply skip it.

lazylinguist · 27/06/2019 11:47

Nope. It shows a lack of interest in one thing that isn't Westminster crap.

I have no interest in football per se. I'm absolutely delighted, however, that the women's game and women's sport in general is getting so much more attention and publicity. I've even glanced through a few articles about the Women's World Cup. However, I couldn't tell you the name of the English captain if you paid me!

I'm as unimpressed as anyone else by Boris et al, but tere are a gazillion things that are important to all kinds of people. Politicians can't be expected to know details about all of them.

SimonJT · 27/06/2019 11:47

I’ve watched most of the matches, I don’t know many of the players names, as a football fan i’m interested in the game, not lone individuals.

Magi84 · 27/06/2019 11:49

I don't believe everything I read in the newspaper

Fibbke · 27/06/2019 11:51

They don't tend to try and trick people over the name if the England captain Grin

And Jo is Scottish so why would she be taking interest in the english team?. I couldn't tell you who the captain of any Scottish or English sports teams are. Male or female. Not interested in sport, only know that there's a world cup going on at the moment as it's been mentioned on the main news.

On the flip side, Jo Swinson is the parent of two small boys and is totally up to speed with all issues affecting parents.

Isn't that more important than knowing who the captain of a team is?

araiwa · 27/06/2019 11:53

I couldnt name a single English player

Ive watched highlights of every game so far

The only players name i recognised was the brazilian Martha

MyOpinionIsValid · 27/06/2019 11:54

TBH, a load of sweaty women chasing a pigs bladder round my telly isn't right up there on my radar of important things

MyOpinionIsValid · 27/06/2019 11:55

slumps in abject misery

FFS it'll be Wimbedon with all that grunting and puffing for the next fortnight

ConfusedandContrary · 27/06/2019 12:02

YABVU. I cannot bear Jo Swinson but I fail to see the importance of her knowing who the captain of a football team is. I don't think that it tells you anything about her.

PettyContractor · 27/06/2019 12:04

Do you read ever word in a newspaper, right down to the advertising? (Advertisements would be more interesting than football, sometimes.)

Even before the internet, I don't think anyone did that. (Maybe someone in solitary confinement for years at a time, who was given one newspaper a month...)

ConfusedandContrary · 27/06/2019 12:06

Personally speaking, I don't read a newspaper but I read a number of news sites every day and I skip any stories on sports unless they are related to a wider issue.

AtmosClock · 27/06/2019 12:07

I'm sorry but it is a ridiculous requirement. They're not running for captain of the local pub quiz team

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 27/06/2019 12:10

I don’t know the names of the captains of any sports teams, male or female. I may not be qualified to lead a political party. But won’t be on account of this.

PuppyMonkey · 27/06/2019 12:11

If they ever did really need to know this, they could always google.

I read newspapers and don’t know this one.

SquishySquirmy · 27/06/2019 12:20

Politicians don't have to be interested in football to be good at their job.
I don't mind if the Lib dem leader doesn't know who the captain of the lionesses is.

Is this the new version of the cringy "pint of milk" question?

I DO expect the lib dem leader to know what a woman is, but that's a whole other issue...

MissDollyMix · 27/06/2019 12:25

I don't know who the captain of the Lionesses is. I didn't even know what the Lionesses were until I read this thread. I wouldn't be able to name a single England footballer on the men's team either. I follow current affairs but I have no interest whatsoever in football. I zone out when it comes to that. I don't expect Jo Swinson to either or in fact any other man standing in a leadership contest. Why are you holding Jo Swinson up to account? Does Ed Davey know?

jameswong · 27/06/2019 12:32

Jo Swinson was my MP for years and she was brilliant. Hope she becomes leader.

ConfusedandContrary · 27/06/2019 12:33

She's my MP now and I bloody well hope that she doesn't.
