to be a little perturbed to have discovered that my next door neighbour is a Creationist?

DH overheard our next door neighbour having a row with his wife in the back garden yesterday. He was insisting - belligerently - that the Earth is 6000 years old, Stephen Hawking was an idiot and the moon landing was faked. His wife was cackling and saying things like "but it's basic GCSE physics!".

For the avoidance of dripfeed: he's a dour, ill-mannered git who bellows at his kids all weekend and lets his dog shit on our drive.

OK. What harm is his Creationism going to do you? I'd be more worried by the dog shit on the drive.

PorpoisefullyObtuse · 25/06/2019 23:01

My lovely colleague is too. Her thoughts on the dinosaurs involve cavemen and a worldwide conspiracy. Not sure how they organised the logistics.

Pollaidh · 25/06/2019 23:04

Can I suggest you take to wearing a pasta strainer on your head at all times. If he asks why, you're a member of the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster.

Pollaidh · 25/06/2019 23:05

Um, that's a real thing by the way. Look it up!

Aquamarine1029 · 25/06/2019 23:07

Avoid and ignore. Problem solved.

Greensleeves · 25/06/2019 23:08

My ds1 went through a pastafarian phase Pollaidh!

Clearly his Creationism poses no threat to our safety womaninthedark. But I've never met one before, so I'm a little taken aback. Mostly I'm just poking fun, because a) his views are completely loopy, and b) I don't like the cunt

If you’d found this out about your husband, you’d be right to be concerned. Your next door neighbour? Not sure why you’d give a toss.

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 25/06/2019 23:11

I’d be fascinated op

I don’t think I could remain married to a creationist. I’d lose all respect for them.

newtlover · 25/06/2019 23:13

mmm, I met one once but this was on a bus in Kenya and I reasoned to myself that the person had not had the benefit of David Attenborough documentaries. I assume this guy was educated in this country so there is no excuse. However I think your best course of action is to avoid the subject which should be quite easy, I have never discussed evolution with my neighbours.

Didntwanttochangemyname · 26/06/2019 08:06

I've got a mum-friend who is one, her kids wear clothes with dinosaurs on them, and I often giggle at the irony. She is nice and the kids get on, but I don't credit her with great intelligence.

Barbarafromblackpool · 26/06/2019 08:10

I worked with one once. He insisted the earth used to spin more quickly and that was why dinosaurs were big. So he did think dinosaurs were real, but had died out more recently. Thought fossils being really old were a hoax.

CigarsofthePharoahs · 26/06/2019 08:10

I've met a few. If you say "Genesis chapter one is an allegory" they actually explode.
Problem solved.

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 26/06/2019 08:10

That could be fun!

LiveFatsDieYoGnu · 26/06/2019 08:27

I knew someone who was studying archaeology and anthropology who was a young earth creationist. I never worked that one out.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 26/06/2019 08:31

Did you tape the row and try and sell it to a newspaper Grin (completely misses the point of the thread)

Nighttimenope · 26/06/2019 08:33

I’m a creationist. I don’t recognise myself in any of these caricatures funnily enough Hmm

Sindragosan · 26/06/2019 08:34

There are many creationists up and down the country, some will be lovely, some arseholes, same as any other group. As long as they aren't harming anyone, who cares?

isabellerossignol · 26/06/2019 08:37

I know loads of creationists, probably hundreds. I just smile and nod and inwardly roll me eyes, or engage in debate of they want to discuss it. Most of them are lovely, some aren't.

MyOpinionIsValid · 26/06/2019 08:38

Nice to see tolerance is alive and well.

UnconsideredTrifles · 26/06/2019 08:40

I'm a creationist, but in a God-made-it-via-science way. I don't think the moon landings were faked.

I promise I'm not a threat to my neighbours!

Littlecaf · 26/06/2019 08:40

My usual response is “oh right....cuppa tea?” Ignore.

TheRedBarrows · 26/06/2019 08:41

They’ve been married long enough to have kids and are only just having this conversation ?

It isn’t catching as far as I know but just to be sure I wouldn’t stand too near the fence in case you get caught up in The Rapture.

EyeDrops · 26/06/2019 08:43

I'd be more perturbed that he's a twat that a creationist.

I'm a creationist. I'm also intelligent and don't deny the existence of dinosaurs. I think the world and the things in it have evolved and changed since God created it, but still believe that he did. And I'd never put down or belittle people who believe things different to me!

(What the moon landings have to do with anything, I don't know...)

SilverySurfer · 26/06/2019 09:31

I worked with someone like this. When I asked her about fossils she said 'God put them there' but could not come up with an explanation as to why. Hmm

isabellerossignol · 26/06/2019 09:39

The explanation that I have received regarding fossils and dinosaurs is that it is to test faith. If you believe in them then your faith isn't strong enough and you're not really a Christian. Apparently.
