Rich people = same car

To wonder why all the loaded people at my kids’ school drive the same car - Range Rover/ Land Rover? Surely there are more choices to spend money on?? They are like sheep!

Some cars are better than other cars for the purposes people in the same situation need them for. So is it really such a stretch to understand why loads of the same demographic have the same car?

Manclife1 · 26/06/2019 10:12

@BirthdayDreamer

Um no. The inconvenience of taking it into the garage? Unreliability? Constantly getting it fixed?

Are you talking about Buying new Range Rover?Grin

Rich people = same car
Morgan12 · 26/06/2019 10:18

Range rovers are totally naff round my way now. Every second person seems to have one. People I know for a fact are definitely not rich. I imagine they just want to put a pic on Instagram of them holding their Starbucks pumpkin latte across the steering wheel.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 26/06/2019 10:19

I don't care what car people buy as long as they learn to drive it. I live in an area with lots of narrow terraced streets, with cars parked up and down each side as there's little off road parking. I am sick of reversing my Fiesta 100 yards down the street because some idiot in a Range Rover can't manoeuvre it properly into a perfectly decent passing place. With unlimited cash I'd far rather a BMW 1 series or an A-class.

Cyclades1 · 26/06/2019 10:21

It is quite hilarious that people are rushing to discredit those who drive one as not being "really" rich, tacky, classless, new money etc. isn't it the car of choice for your monarchy?

I imagine Lizzie would be mightily offended to be described as such Grin

HeronLanyon · 26/06/2019 10:25

I’ve always assumed range rovers are aspirational - have not ever thought they were nice cars or a sign of wealth. Maybe I’m wrong (and I do have wealthy friends who own range rovers) but aren’t they often on finance - I’ve too
Often seen them parked outside of pretty grotty houses to think differently. Just think they are naff. Hmmm - Apols to any rr owners.

SushiTime · 26/06/2019 10:28

@BogglesGoggles my mum also has a RR and hers has a fridge. I had to move it the other day and thought I'd have a nosey inside. Kid you not she had it full with G&T cans Grin

GrassIsntGreener · 26/06/2019 10:33

Loads have them here too - rural location. Maybe those who use them in town they tow with them, camp in them, regularly drive down muddy bumpy tracks? Trying to help the 4x4 drivers out a bit here. Confused

I don't have one, fwiw.

Gin96 · 26/06/2019 10:36

For towing 2 horses you can’t beat a Landrover Discovery. They are also amazing in the snow, even snow drifts, you hit a button and the suspension rises up 😊

Karigan195 · 26/06/2019 10:41

Either way I think it’s appalling the number of people that have these large gas guzzlers for driving round towns and cities.

I wouldn’t buy one. If I needed a 4wd I’d get a more capable one like a Toyota.

There’s a mix at my sons admittedly quite expensive school from old bangers up to a Maserati I’ve seen a few times 😂. Not telling you what my car is but she’s practical, not the cheapest and not ridiculous expensive and exactly what I need

OhTheRoses · 26/06/2019 10:45

When I went to a local dealership recently I asked about cash discounts. Evidently they no longer exist and it may be possible to drive a harder bargain if taking finance. There is merit therefore in entering into a loan agreement (wouldn't lease) so the dealer gets the commission off the finance deal which can be repaid after the first month for a very small admin fee. They will shave a bit more off that to ensure it's cost neutral.

I've paid cash for the dc's cars but tbf there is also some merit in them leasing a starter car with insurance packages thrown in to help build up ncb's. If the dc needed cars for work I'd certainly go that route.

Shockers · 26/06/2019 10:47

DH got his after getting stuck in snow, in his van, on the way to a wedding (he’s a singer). A chap in a RR put his gear in the back and took him there.

He does a lot of rural weddings in country houses.

I’m not sure why I feel the need to defend the fact that we own a RR- it works for our needs: caravan, dogs, teens , and work.

This thread is quite sneery imo.

Pretendapony · 26/06/2019 10:48

Reasons we own a (14 year old) Range Rover:
We live down a lane and get snowed in
To tow our trailer
To tow our off road LR
For our long journeys to visit family (5hour drive)
Because they’re high up so I can see further afield on the back lanes that I travel daily
To fit our pushchair in the huge boot (we live on a yard and so have an off roading pushchair)
My husband adores Land Rovers
My husband’s job is fixing Land Rovers & designing Land Rover based vehicles
My husbands hobby is off roading in Land Rovers
I love Defenders but there is no point owning one because they just get stolen

Have I justified why I drive a Range Rover?

araiwa · 26/06/2019 10:52

People like to buy the best

Range rovers are the best of that type of vehicle

EarlGreyOfTwinings · 26/06/2019 10:55

you are missing the point that people are laughing at the aspirational owners, who drive from their house to school via the supermarket and the gym. Not at the practical owners who actually use their RR or LR!

PookieDo · 26/06/2019 10:58

I don’t have a dislike for them I think even the evoke is a lovely looking car and they are lovely inside, so I see why people get them

I have driven one for a few days and what struck me was they are absolutely awful to try to park with small DC to get out of the doors in the back - so the argument that they are good family cars doesn’t really work too well unless you only ever park in a P&C space. I think they can be status symbols. I’ve always had 2DC in a small/mid range car and never had major space issues myself but I also notice a lot of Prams like a bugaboo barely even fit in a RR evoke boot (block off whole back window unless you dismantle the whole thing inc wheels). Also I would fall over at the cost of replacement tires!

I feel the same about very long cars too, I don’t like them wouldn’t buy one but if people want to have a luxury car on finance that is up to them! I laughed more at my old neighbour who got herself an Audi TT on expensive finance she can only drive at weekends as she works in the city and continues to rent a crappy flat. She crops out the majority of the crappiness of her flat on IG and also poses with her Starbucks on her Audi 😂

Corndollie · 26/06/2019 11:04

I drive a LR, am I rich? Smile
It's an 18 year old discovery. It has 3500kg braked towing capacity (which is why I have it). Plus during the beast from the east last year and the floods a few years before, I was the only member of staff living in my area that managed to get to work (although thinking about it, that might not have been an advantage).

underneaththeash · 26/06/2019 11:05

We have 1 Land Rover, 1 Range Rover, nether on finance. We live on a hill in a village and previous cars weren’t reliable in the snow.
The Land Rover is comfy ad spacious (especially when you have a 6’5” DH and 3 children).

I can’t understand why people would drive them in central London though.

Monday55 · 26/06/2019 11:06

A close family member or mine has one not sure which exact model. But you can barely see the rear view and for such a massive car the boot is ridiculously small. Even she complains about the boot space and only has one child. It's not a family car but definitely a status car or a mid-life crisis type of ride when all your kids have flown the nest maybe.

Monday55 · 26/06/2019 11:07

was referring to Range rover *

Gin96 · 26/06/2019 11:09

Mine also has 7 seats, it’s great for taking all the family out

Buyitinbamboo · 26/06/2019 11:27

I think people can buy whatever car they want but I wince a bit when I see people with one child, living nowhere near the countryside driving a Range Rover, only because of the environmental impact!

Tallgreenbottle · 26/06/2019 11:28

People who are actually well off don't tend to buy lease purchase range rovers. They buy £3-5k bangers and run them in to the ground. Unless they're footballers with no class really.

Karigan195 · 26/06/2019 11:29

I’m anti such cars in towns and cities but I did just google fuel economy for the RR and in fairness they have a pretty good mpg on the new hybrid....

SushiTime · 26/06/2019 11:32

@Tallgreenbottle such a bizarre assumption and sweeping comment...I work in the industry (kind of, but I deal with these stinkingly rich people) who do you think buys lambos/Ferrari's/Rolls etc. If it's not people who are extremely wealthy?
