I'm on the cusp of starting to make and sell my own handmade ice cream at farmers markets etc and I'll be selling from a traditional style ice cream bike. I don't do 'standard' flavours, so you'd find flavours like Eton Mess, Peanut Butter & Caramel or Rhubarb Crumble, plus a vegan flavour / sorbet.

Recipes are developed and tested, kitchen is being modified to keep environmental health happy and the bike is awaiting delivery. But - I need a name for my business! Without it I can't set up my website etc...

I need something that suggests

  • premium quality
  • something that's a bit different to the norm
  • possibly a hint at the environmental / zero waste ethos

I'm in Wales but I've been avoiding place related names as I want the option to expand in future, and I can't be certain that the business will always be bike-based so I've been avoiding explicitly bike-related names.

Possibly something like Creamery, The Scoop, The Project, The _ Ice Cream Co but I'm very open to suggestions! Help please hivemind...

Don't be afraid to use the bike/ place name as inspiration - noone is going to take you to trading standards if you expand and do deliveries via van. If not in the name then maybe in the branding - sounds as though you could tell a lovely story about the cows, the pastures, the bike basket being loaded with tubs.
Plus, otherwise you risk ending up with something generic.

Absolutely think of something that can be worked into a twitter/insta handle (that hasn't already been taken).

I have no suggestions for names, but a few things for you to think about.

Do you want just a name or do you also want the company to have an image it is known own by. If so the name and image will have to work together.

Do you intend applying for a trademark? If so the best trade marks are made up words.

Even if you don't plan to apply for a trademark, you should search the register to make sure no one else has already applied for something similar that you may infringe.

Check the register at companies House to see if anyone already has it as a a company name.

Check to see if the domain name is free.

Good luck and hopefully we get to try some of your ice cream

Ginger's Comfort Emporium sounds like a brothel! I don't have any ideas but you've had some great advice from the likes of @curlygirl. I think I fit in your target demographic and am drawn to names that are short but not twee. I agree with PP that if you're planning on appealing to vegans then avoid references to cream and dairy. You mentioned in your reply that you're less keen on the plays on words - good!! Good advice from a PP who suggested imagining your product on sale in Fortnum and Mason. This will quickly rule out anything too naff that will date. Good luck with your business!

Lastbustowhitehawk · 26/06/2019 04:35

Just another thought re. play on words names because loads have been suggested. I think they can be quite amusing and hard to come up with so this is not a pop at PPs who have suggested them. However, to take an example of a different area, i would never get my hair cut in a salon called something like Fringe Benefits or A Cut Above the Rest. The stylists could be excellent but it just doesn't conjure up an image of quality which is what I think is a driving factor in many purchases. I personally find it easier to justify an expense when it seems like good quality. I hope that's helpful, purely sharing some honest thoughts and not having a go at others who have made suggestions!
