How are people not more outraged? And no, tourists do not visit the UK specifically because of the royal family.

"This year, 320,000 people were recorded as homeless in Britain"

That’s in response to the ‘they only cost us £1.20 per head’ comment.

PuppyMonkey · 25/06/2019 12:37

The headlines shine a spotlight on the whole parasitic lot of them though. I know it’s not just Harry and Meghan and their essential cottage renovations that are the problem but the story highlights the issue.

adaline · 25/06/2019 12:38

I know it’s not just Harry and Meghan and their essential cottage renovations that are the problem but the story highlights the issue.

Does it? Or does it just encourage us to focus our annoyance with the government on two random people instead of the real problems?

Bandara · 25/06/2019 12:42

@Seniorschoolmum why didnt they stay in the kensington appartment that they had? They got a much bigger house (5 houses in one) paid for by the taxpayer. That is greed. And it is really corruption

CoolCarrie · 25/06/2019 12:44

Why can’t they use the money Diana left Harry in her will? That is what normal people do

tenlittlecygnets · 25/06/2019 12:44

I really don't think she's short of money. If she was, she could always sell a valuable artefact or two.

You do realise that the Queen doesn't actually own Buckingham Palace or any of the other palaces? They are all Crown property and will be passed down. Same with a lot of the paintings, jewellery etc. She can't just sell them.

The80sweregreat · 25/06/2019 12:45

The daily mail and piers Morgan have it in for them both ( this story is in other papers too , but that one seems to put the boot in a lot more when it comes to H and M)
They never let the facts get in the way of a good old Meghan bashing opportunity whilst Kate and William are made out to be perfect.
They have also spent lots of money on their homes.
From what I've seen online the place they are renovating looks strange and reminds me of a row of council houses in the area I was brought up in! ( nothing wrong with council houses , but I think it's the colour and design of the place that looks odd, sort of many places glued together in a line) it's not very pretty, might be when it's done up though. Also very close to Heathrow as well.

TheRLodger · 25/06/2019 12:46

I want to see an itemised bill for everything which was spent on the house. From structural stuff to sofas. I want to see quotes. Also clear indication what was paid by tax payers and what was brought by the Sussex’s. Then I will make an informed decision about whether £2 million was worth it or not

PreseaCombatir · 25/06/2019 12:49

The monarchy are too expensive, so let’s overhaul the whole system.
I can see that being really cheap to do, and a super way of saving money.....
Ffs lol

Cherylshaw · 25/06/2019 12:49

I don't know if it has been mentioned before but was it not costing tax payers 300 odd million to renovate Buckingham palace? Apologies if I am wrong.

PopWentTheWeasel · 25/06/2019 12:51

I love Mary Beard's comment on Twitter about this, essentially saing if this was in poor condition and 5 houses knocked into one, what does it say about the conditions that staff / tenants live in when the new house is only for 3 people plus staff?

happyhillock · 25/06/2019 12:51

The Queen's allowance is tax payer's money, i think it's a bloody disgrace there both millionaire's its to be there home so they should pay for it, so they do a lot of work for charities they see how hard it is for some people to get any kind of help from local services, what about families in poverty, homelessness, food bank's and baby bank's, Harry complaints of being royal as a burden, it's not a burden to be given a £2.4m hand out is it? They'll alway's be millionaire's if they never have to spend there own money, they should be ashamed of themselves, and as for palaces beloning to the nation piece of crap we're not allowed to go in them unless we pay AGAIN

Saltystraw · 25/06/2019 12:52

Sorry but in regards to the tourist thing.. I think the royals bring in loads of tourists! Maybe those tourists see other things aswell but a lot of the charm and sites of London were based around royal sites and history. I don’t think it would be as interesting a city without them. “Spoken from a recent tourist who knows loads of other tourists” and you may not care for tourists but those tourists give hotels, cafes, shops, airlines and heaps of ordinary people who work in those industries jobs.

PeonyPink0 · 25/06/2019 12:53

@Passthecherrycoke They did do a press release.

AngeloMysterioso · 25/06/2019 12:54

FFS nobody here is bashing Meghan. I haven’t seen a single post that is just about her. The response to this would be the same whoever Harry was married to or whichever minor royal had spent such a revolting amount of money renovating a house that nobody was forcing them to occupy in the first place.

I’m getting really sick of all the “poor Meghan is such a victim” crap.

It is security that is the biggest cost I believe. It must be huge.

Bandara · 25/06/2019 12:57

@Saltystraw lots of people go to see the Palace lf Versaille, and France do not have a Royal family anymore

adaline · 25/06/2019 12:58

It was paid by crown estates, the same crown estates that is probably THE single biggest taxpayer in the country £350M last year? Compare that to Starbucks or Amazon or Vodafone, then tell me who's taking the P. None of whom by the way do anything to promote this country abroad.

Stop being sensible and logical Grin

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/06/2019 12:58

I can just about see taxpayers' money being spent on historic buildings - and only then for essentials, rather than extra fripperies the royals fancy - but does this place qualify as such?

I'm no expert in these matters, but it didn't look especially historic to me - more like a few broken-down retainers' cottages

Bandara · 25/06/2019 12:58

@EvelineUK you really don't think that the Royal family use corruption? That it is even a possibility? Many other royal familes have been corrupt

Harry is in danger of becoming prince Andrew just fannying about spending money people are getting sick of them fast what is wrong with the kensington house they live in ?

CruellaFeinberg · 25/06/2019 13:03

so, you all ok to give me £1.24 a year? yeah? no? why not?

Puzzledandpissedoff · 25/06/2019 13:04

Good luck with that; the RF have a LOT of experience in presenting things just as they want them, so even a full disclosure would probably make little sense

And there's always the good old fallback of "security" to prevent anything being revealed ...
