How are people not more outraged? And no, tourists do not visit the UK specifically because of the royal family.

"This year, 320,000 people were recorded as homeless in Britain"

Couldn't care less about her engagement ring, that's her business and people who bang on about that are starting to sound slightly unhinged. Why does what a complete stranger does with their jewellery matter to you?

It's the concept and cost of monarchy as a whole that I object to.

WhoKnewBeefStew · 26/06/2019 17:53

I love the royal family and all it stands for, but even I struggle to justify this amount. I know they bring in millions in tourism, charity etc etc, but that amount to renovate a private house is disgraceful

CoolCarrie · 26/06/2019 17:55

They are off to Africa for a couple of years, and then I bet they will relocate to the USA because that’s where the money is, as Harry has moved well down the list and they won’t want to live like fergie and her girls.

Zenith123 · 26/06/2019 17:55

It's an outrage. They've got the money, they should pay for the renovation. They got the house free!! It's taking the Mick. There's people on the streets with no home, and others breaking their backs to save for a mortgage, or rent for the rest of their lives. I honestly don't understand why they are getting all this as a freebie!! I do like Harry and Meghan.....but...

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 26/06/2019 17:56

So hang on they are spending 3 million on renovations but then going away to Africa for a prolonged stay? For how long? Will it be frequent? Did they really need to go to these lengths if they will be away from this country for long intervals anyway?

PineappleFwitters · 26/06/2019 17:57

I'm not sure anyone other than the media has said they're moving to Africa.

ssd · 26/06/2019 17:57

I don't get the annoyance at meghan redesigning her engagement ring? How is that anyone's business but hers and Harry's?

Nanalisa60 · 26/06/2019 17:59

LaurieMerlow

“two wrongs don’t make a wright “

rollingpine · 26/06/2019 18:03

Does the house they live in belong to the Crown (and by extension, the state)?

ssd · 26/06/2019 18:06

I've just googled her engagement ring and read the story, seriously people what the feck has it got to do with you, who are you to say whether she's allowed to change her ring or not??
What a load of bloody nonsense.

hoxtonbabe · 26/06/2019 18:08

@PineappleFwitters

I totally agree! Who cares about the ring, all she’s done is changed the band to a pave setting, probably used the same gold, if she removed the main Diana diamonds I could slightly understand the uproar but this is such a non issue, but no doubt someone will come along waffling on about tradition, etc.

As you say it’s the concept or the entire royals spending on the whole I dislike also, not only the duke and Duchess of Sussex spending habits.

Prince Andrew was the chief piss taker and probably still is but just more undercover about it these days and off the radar as now the spotlight has shifted and everyone picks on Meghan. Kate and William aren’t any better!

PineappleFwitters · 26/06/2019 18:14

Andrew also hangs out with some rather dodgy blokes. Say what you like about Harry and Meghan. but at least they're not mates with a convicted sex offender!

Jellicoe · 26/06/2019 18:17

They are cringe with the whole woke crap hazza goes on by the nudging of mega...

Isatis · 26/06/2019 18:25

I'm considerably more pissed off with Johnson finding £9 billion down the back of a sofa to fund tax cuts for his richest mates.

Mummyshark2019 · 26/06/2019 18:26

It's horrible. Crown funding is awful. Especially with so many people (tax payers) struggling in the UK. We pay to fund their lavish lifestyle. Outrageous.

Tinkobell · 26/06/2019 18:36

I'm stumped at the sum of money of £2.4M for a renovation on a building of this size. Two years ago I demolished and built a brand new 6000sqft house for £1M. Frogmore Cottage should have been bulldozed and rebuilt for half the price. Ridiculous. If they had a QS managing the project, that person ought to be sacked for fleecing the public pocket.

Alsohuman · 26/06/2019 18:37

Me too @Istasis.

Tinkobell · 26/06/2019 18:42

If they stuck a nice swimming pool in, that costs around £50k....not £2.4M ffs. The only feasible explanation that I can think of for high build costs like that might be:-

  • Basement excavations? Unlikely in a listed pile.
  • Piling - err well, the structure of the house is there right?
  • the listed building / conservation people insisting on exterior items being done by a small number of limited suppliers - this might apply to the windows etc.......but frankly non of the above explain the daft £2.4M figure.
CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 26/06/2019 18:44

Say what you like about Harry and Meghan. but at least they're not mates with a convicted sex offender!

There is that going for them I admit.

detangler · 26/06/2019 18:46

As my former boss said re expenses: “Spending other people's money like it’s other people’s money”.

lyralalala · 26/06/2019 18:48

It's an outrage. They've got the money, they should pay for the renovation. They got the house free!! It's taking the Mick. There's people on the streets with no home, and others breaking their backs to save for a mortgage, or rent for the rest of their lives. I honestly don't understand why they are getting all this as a freebie!! I do like Harry and Meghan.....but...

They will be paying rent. Just as the other royals ‘given’ Crown Estate properties to live in they’ll pay a rent.

jillb55 · 26/06/2019 18:50

The money the queen gets is tax payers' money. The Crown Estates are not the personal possession of the monarchy.

Alsohuman · 26/06/2019 18:54

Actually @jillb55, I think you’ll find they are.

Fresta · 26/06/2019 18:57

We'd be better off if we paid all our taxes to the Royal family and let them run the country like they used to. The government waste FAR more of my money than a piddly little £2.4million- Brexit alone has already cost the country £66 BILLION!

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 26/06/2019 19:00

Granted, Myfanwyprice. Its not a lot. However when you add it all £1.20 off each Tax payer. Therefore well exceeding into the millions.
Its certainly not a little either.
I mean put it this way. I wouldn't mind £1.20 per year off every Tax payer in Britain, would you.
