Even among supporters of the monarchy I usually hear preference for it to be more streamlined, focused on direct heirs etc. I certainly don't see any support for royals lower down the pecking order to be allowed to refuse a luxury paid for apartment with security already in place in favour of something much more costly and in need of separate very expensive security.

And let’s not get into the ‘virtue’ of the royal family because we run into difficult very quickly.

I'm not a Republican but think the royal family could reign in their living expenses a lot and look to the times when loads of people are struggling. I would also make the argument that if the Treasury can find money for this then they could also find money for a lot of other things that would help lift people out of poverty.

Except the money doesn’t come from the Treasury, it comes from the Crown Estate.

So because they flounce about doing charity work they are entitled to spend and live anywhere they like ?

I'd suggest this is perhaps the wrong way round. As long as most support the monarchy they know perfectly well they can behave more or less as they like - the charity work's merely a cover to imply they're worth it

Charles's sickening hypocrisy's already been touched on, but when mentioning Meghan's absence from the Trump visit, remember too his rudeness to the Chinese because he'd found a fresh obsession in the Dalai Lama

Semantics in the eyes of most people. Revenues go to the Treasury. If the Crown Estate have that much money to burn, they should be giving more to the Treasury to benefit the general public.
