Las Vegas - quality or quantity

lululemona · 24/06/2019 14:00

Just about to book a very last minute trip to Las Vegas. Would you prefer to spend 4 days at the Bellagio (incredible 5* hotel) or 7 days in a very decent 4-star hotel? The latter is £400 cheaper. We'll book the same excursions regardless.

I'm thinking quality over quantity but DH would prefer a longer break. It's unlikely we'll go to LV a 2nd time.

Very tempted to press on with my preferred option as I have a feeling we won't need to spend an entire week there.

I've been to Vegas 5 or 6 times, would definitely go for the week! You barely spend any time in your room, and can visit all the other hotels anyway. I'd especially want to be there for a week if you plan on doing any trips eg grand canyon as that takes most of a day out. But if you do want to chill by the pool (and you can even in the hottest months as the heat is really dry) then it does depend which other hotel you're looking at as to how nice the pools are

4 star option: MGM Grand Hotel or Hilton Grand

Nothing at all wrong with the MGM Grand. You cane definitely go and visit the Bellagio or even book a nice meal there. The japanese restaurant is great.

We stayed in the Cosmopolitan, our balcony over looked the Bellagio fountains. Would definitely recommend this hotel. New and modern with fabulous rooms.
The swimming pools were great, plenty of different restaurants, and had different bands playing in the evenings. We hadn’t heard of them but still very good.
We went mid Aug as part of a longer route.

We did:
1 pool day
1 day Grand Canyon helicopter, boat and tour
1 day hoover dam
1 day the strip rides and shopping outlets

I would have happily stayed for another pool day.

Enjoy, you will have fabulous time.

We did 10 days in Vegas and loved it all, didn't get bored once! stayed at the flamingo it's almost opposite the Bellagio and we had a fountain view room.

Bearbehind · 24/06/2019 19:10

I think Vegas is shite but, it’s a long way so if you are literally just going there and it’s not a stopover I’d suggest the 7 day option.

There is a lot to see (once 😂) and there’s not that much difference in the hotels.

I think all the hotels there are very dated.

Idontwanttotalk · 24/06/2019 19:14

I think people who say 7 days is too long maybe having planned their trip/ researched before they went.
We've always added a few days at Vegas on to anytime we've been to California/Utah/Colorado but the last time we went we took an 8-day trip just to Vegas. I probably found that slightly too long but only because we'd been 8 times before (usually in August) and that time was in September when it seemed to get dark very quickly.

Is the 4-day trip actually 4 days there excluding all travelling?

Overmydeadbody456 · 24/06/2019 19:18

We’ve spent a week in the bellagio and it was too long.
I’ve been there before for 5 days and that was just about right

Overmydeadbody456 · 24/06/2019 19:20

MGM is at one end of the strip. I stayed there on the first strip and found it to be too far out from the action. Bellagio is much more central

Chanel05 · 24/06/2019 19:20

Definitely 7 days! I went for 10 the first time and every time I crossed something off my to do list, I added something else. I don't gamble. I also got married there! It's a fab place.

Overmydeadbody456 · 24/06/2019 19:20

*trip not strip

NameChangeNugget · 24/06/2019 19:22

I totally agree with @Idontwanttotalk.

Go for a week. There’s so much to do and see

wooopde · 24/06/2019 19:24

Agree 7 nights is a bit long in Vegas but then 4 won't feel long enough with the travelling maybe. Are u able to comprise / stretch to 5 nights

Lwmommy · 24/06/2019 19:26

5 days was plenty both times we went, 4* will be perfect, we found the rooms huge compared to other cities we've been in.

Activities we did which I'd recommend

  • bellagio buffet - oh good lord above, the amount of food. And good stuff like rib eye and lobster
  • old town for a wander about, bit cheesy and run down but good for tacky souvenir shopping
  • helicopter over Grand Canyon
  • can't remember what it's called but there's a big discount mall about 20 min taxi ride off strip with converse, vans, hot topic and loads more all last season and heavily discounted.
  • Excalibur medieval feast with jousting and jesters
  • treasure island pirate show

We also went to the Elvis museum and some brilliant dive bars just off strip which were lots of fun, interspersed with slot machines and small bets on poker and blackjack.

Oh and on our first trio, we got married.

It's a weird place, but we loved it.

Guff · 24/06/2019 19:27

MGM is absolutely fine - we upgraded to a suite and was still a lot cheaper - we found it more central than The Venitian. They have a monorail station there too that'll take you up to the top of the strip.
Make sure you go and see Penn and Teller at The Rio as they're leaving very soon, you can get a free bus from The Flamingo xx

Aquilla · 24/06/2019 19:28

4 stars in the U. S is still really nice. Huge rooms, huge beds and plumbing that puts British water pressure to shame! I would do 7 days.

presumedinnocence · 24/06/2019 19:29

We stayed at the Wynn, the breakfast buffet and the pool area were superb

Gatehouse77 · 24/06/2019 19:39

@Guff
Make sure you go and see Penn and Teller

Thank you for that! We're on Vegas at the end of July so have just booked tickets for us 😀👍

We're staying at the Cosmopolitan as recommended by my brothers.

Guff · 24/06/2019 19:43

@Gatehouse77 The Cosmopolitan buffet was AMAZING, we'd definitely stay there if we went again. It's really nice.

Rtmhwales · 24/06/2019 19:51

I've been 26 times now (lived in Arizona nearby for a number of years and it's a common weekend holiday) and have been to 90% of the hotels on the Strip.

MGM is lovely as well, I'd stay there and save the money. Hands down.

PatoPotato · 24/06/2019 20:08

Check the prices for days out of summer or holidays and the discount is steep.

I love the Mirage and wouldn't consider it 4 star in the same way you would check in to a 4 star in Europe. Hotels on the strip are in a different league. Just remember it's huge and you'll be walking a lot the strip is kind of an illusion with how large it is. Save your money for shows and experiences. Also take the bus on the strip, the taxis will try to get one over on you.

FromEden · 24/06/2019 20:11

I wouldn't bother with buses at all for short trips up and down the strip, use Uber or Lyft, they are a lot cheaper than taxis

DoingItForTheKids · 24/06/2019 20:25

7 days would be overkill in LV for sure (I've been a lot for pleasure and work). However, if you are planning on sitting by a pool for a couple of days then 7 days in a cheaper hotel with a pool would be ok.

MissFrittonwasaman · 24/06/2019 20:30

Another vote for The Vdara!

HomeEdRocks18 · 24/06/2019 20:56

I'd go for 7 days as you effectively lose 2 days with travelling. The Bellagio is amazing but very expensive
