Would I be completely wrong to do this- buying a dissertation

Finishing my masters I’ve wrote 6000 words which my supervisor has basically told me to re-write.
I just want this to be over but I’m working ridiculous hours atm, recently suffered miscarriage, not sleeping due to ongoing ptsd and dh is undergoing a big operation in next month so I’m struggling with focus and time.
I know it’s morally wrong and I probably would feel guilty but I need to lighten my plate at the minute feel so overwhelmed- I had a panic arrack at work the other day thinking about everything.
Deferring is not an option sadly :(

Havent RTFT. Just hire an editor to whip what you've written into shape.

ruralliving19 · 25/06/2019 11:43

When I did my Masters thesis last year, I was able to get an extension just by virtue of being a single parent with school age children home over the holidays so I'm sure you could get an extension.

What are your marks like so far and what are the rules for your institution re final mark, i.e. do you have to get a Merit in the dissertation to get a Merit overall? How important is a particular mark, do you need it to progress to further study or to secure a particular job? There are various websites that will help you calculate the minimum mark you need in the dissertation to come out with a certain mark overall. That might reassure you.

I would be quite candid with the supervisor and say that you have a lot going on and the idea of a complete rewrite is overwhelming, can s/he break it down for you at all. If your supervisor isn't approachable, go to your Director of Studies or tutor.

DeadDoorpost · 25/06/2019 11:47

I had 8000 words of a 10k dissertation when my tutor told me to start again from scratch... I refused to as I only had a few weeks to go.

I couldn't ever buy a dissertation. Just think of all the work you've put into it! But it's up to you...

StarlyBeee · 25/06/2019 11:51

I had a suicidal boyfriend who was in a mental ward emotionally blackmailing me to see him all my family lived miles I lost my job was skint and living off tinned potatoes haha I was failing! I literally just shut myself away I didn't even see my tutor and got it done I got a 92%
it can be done just tunnel vision your self on this last part and it will all be worth it. Be strong sending lots of luck and best wishes xxx

DugHug · 25/06/2019 11:54

Why is it not possible to defer? Surely that’s the best solution under the circumstances. I’ve marked dissertations before; it’s obvious when the style doesn’t match the student’s previous work and doesn’t follow what the supervisor has told the student to write. They’re usually poor quality because the writer has just knocked it out without due care and attention.

bourbonbiccy · 25/06/2019 12:14

Oh you do sound like you have been and are still going through a lot. However I don't really think this is the answer, if you get caught, all that time previous time of studying will be wasted.

bourbonbiccy · 25/06/2019 12:18

Also you would never know what you were truly capable of 😄😄
Good luck whatever you do 💐💐

I'm an academic and if you came to me with the circumstances I would absolutely be sympathetic and want to help you get through. University support services are there to help. Please see your supervisor and explain your situation. Off the top of my head, these sorts of help should be available to you:

Pastoral care - get referred or self-refer to the university counselling services. Mine has traditional one-to-one appointments as well as support groups for postgrad research students. We even have mindfulness and meditation sessions.

Academic support - what does your university have in this regard? Mine has writing tutors to advise on style, structure, expression, writing retreats (we have these for staff and I've found them surprisingly effective)

Medical allowances - if you have had a miscarriage, PTSD and you are about to have a big uptick in caring responsibilities, then there are really strong case for recognising the impact of that in some ways. When you say 'deferral' - do you men an extension of the submission deadline, or what I would call an interruption ie taking a semester or so's break? At my institution, either would be possible given what you've outlined.

Halloumiminimuffin has given some great advice on how to tackle your dissertation. Do the easy/structural stuff first and let your subconscious work away at the rest.

If you like, pm me the name of your institution and I can look into what sort of help you should be able to access.

“If the uni found out about a student cheating after the fact (for example someone blows the whistle at the essay company after they graduated), would they be able to revoke the qualification?”

Yes we have done this. And if the qualification leads to professional registration then you are in even more serious shit

HerSymphonyAndSong · 25/06/2019 13:10

“Havent RTFT. Just hire an editor to whip what you've written into shape.”

This is not good advice. You could be passing someone else’s work off as your own and find yourself with a charge of plagiarism. Use academic and pastoral support services as advised

wombat1a · 25/06/2019 15:10

Yes, most degree's can be revoked after someone has graduated if the uni finds out later something that would have prevented the person from graduating if they had known about it at the time.

You also have to consider that your dissertation may be unique this year but parts reused another year so could be flagged up a few years after the fact.

All in all it's daft to throw away the years you have studied to try this.

PissedOffProf · 25/06/2019 16:05

Don't do it.
As others said before - just try to plan. Perhaps when you break things down into little tasks, they will not seem so daunting.

Also, as others said, don't underestimate how supportive your supervisor can be. I had students in your circumstances before and I turned myself inside out to help them. Ask your supervisor to support your case for extension with the mitigating circumstances committee. Also ask your supervisor to help you break down your dissertation into smaller tasks.

Finally, you may have much more time than you think. Whenever your deadline is (September or extended), submit what you have even if it's a bit shit. If it fails, you will have a chance to re-submit, so you will actually get more time and support to work on your dissertation. Yes, you will not get a brilliant pass in the end, but it will be an honest pass that you will be able to look on with pride.

NotNowNinja · 25/06/2019 16:14

Thanks all for the lovely supportive messages much appreciated.
To the one poster who wanted to make themselves look like the big I am by belittling me when I’m obviously at rock bottom- shame on you- what a nasty piece of work you are

We all know that desperation can cause people to make daft decisions. You’ve considered this but hopefully your integrity and sense of self-preservation will stop you acting on it. Good luck, and open up as much as you can to those who can help at your institution

CornerofUpandDown · 27/06/2019 17:00

You can do it! When I did my dissertation for my MA I had nothing written by this point in June, you are miles ahead! With planning and support from your uni/tutor you'll get it done on time.

BigfanofCheese · 28/06/2019 14:15

OP there will have been times when everyone on here has considered desperate measures in one way or another. You can do this. If you carry on with the Sept deadline, do check in and offload if it is getting on top of you again x

lily2403 · 28/06/2019 14:28

Masters is pass with merit, pass or fail.

my friend got pass with merit, i got pass we both work the same job.

Just do your best, ask for extension and get it done. Buy it get caught fail...not worth the risk in my opinion

good luck and sorry for your loss

morningafternoonevening · 28/06/2019 15:39

To add that you lots of employers don't even ask for your Master's classification at all, it's much less important than undergraduate degree classification, so hand in what you have done with some serious tweaking and go get your pass!
