Would I be completely wrong to do this- buying a dissertation

Finishing my masters I’ve wrote 6000 words which my supervisor has basically told me to re-write.
I just want this to be over but I’m working ridiculous hours atm, recently suffered miscarriage, not sleeping due to ongoing ptsd and dh is undergoing a big operation in next month so I’m struggling with focus and time.
I know it’s morally wrong and I probably would feel guilty but I need to lighten my plate at the minute feel so overwhelmed- I had a panic arrack at work the other day thinking about everything.
Deferring is not an option sadly :(

Seriously don't do it. I've seen this go wrong when the essay mill was a whistle blower and let the uni know what the student had done. The student got expelled. Suspend your course if youre struggling, but don't do that. You wouldn't feel any pride in your qualification either!

Grumpos · 24/06/2019 13:51

You need to talk to your supervisor and explain about the mental load you’re under.
Don’t buy a dissertation, there’s a big chance you’ll get caught through the plagiarism software and then the whole of your masters will be worthless. Plus the difference in your writing style and the style of the fraudulent author will most likely be evident to your supervisor when they do the first read.
There are always options with these things, they have a duty of care for their students.
Ask for a meeting with supervisor and explain what is happening and ask how they can help you.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 24/06/2019 13:51

Either drop the dissertation and just get a PGDip (if that's an option) or go through your unis process for extenuating circumstances.

sashh · 24/06/2019 13:56

Why isn't deferring an option?

When is your hand in date?

If you hand nothing in, or the 6000 words you have done and fail the dissertation then can you resit?

NotNowNinja · 24/06/2019 13:56

Maybe a PGDip would be better or just carry on and hope it gets a pass? If I got over 63% overall I’d get a merit pass so if I don’t make the changes I’d probably be looking at a 50% pass so overall a passed masters. Does that matter don’t know if classifications matter so much at ma level I just want it to be over I’m so tired and stressed feel sick of it all

OP posts:
VivienneHolt · 24/06/2019 13:57

It would be wrong, and I think you would regret compromising your integrity.

Speak to your supervisor about the various pressures you are under - I’m sure they would consider giving you an extension.

RiftGibbon · 24/06/2019 13:57

OP, why is deferring not an option? You've a clear case for extenuating circumstances.

Given that your supervisor has already seen your work it'll be patently obvious if you have someone write it all for you, so I think that the risk of beng caught out is high.

When is your dissertation due in and how many words does it have to be?

NotNowNinja · 24/06/2019 13:58

12000 due in September

OP posts:
StealthPolarBear · 24/06/2019 13:59

Defer
Or as you say do the minimum. Ime classifications matter less at masters level

NotNowNinja · 24/06/2019 13:59

We have 2 dc so while she recovering I’ll be doing childcare/everything else.
Have employed a cleaner to help out

JasperRising · 24/06/2019 13:59

The moral issue aside, you have a lot on your plate as it is. If you do this you will have the added stress of guilt and worrying if you will be caught. And if it does get flagged, you will have the stress of an investigation and nothing to show for the rest of your work as you won't get the qualification.

As others have said, investigate the PDip option. If you are doing the masters for 'fun' or are in a situation where work experience plus some level of postgraduate study will get you the progression you are hoping for from the masters then do the PDip if it's an option.

If it has to be a masters then be honest with your supervisor and university student/ welfare support and try and get an extension.

But don't buy a dissertation. It's not worth it.

GreenLeavesAndTea · 24/06/2019 14:00

I'd say a passed Masters is far superior to risking getting caught cheating and thrown off your course.

It sounds like you're so overwhelmed you're not thinking clearly. It's such a bad idea though - it's not just morally wrong, there is a good chance you could get caught. As a previous poster has said - your tutor has already seen it, they'll be able to tell if someone else did the rewrite.

Plus, even if you didn't get caught, do you honestly want to know you achieved something like this via cheating?

If you can still get a pass without cheating please go that route.

Disfordarkchocolate · 24/06/2019 14:03

Don't do it. If you can't defer then accept you are getting a postgraduate diploma instead of a Masters and move on.

If this isn't a decision you would have made when you weren't stressed then you know its the wrong decision for you.

stillworkingitout · 24/06/2019 14:03

I work in scientific research - when I review a paper or report to prepare it to submission I can identify who in the team has written what. Everyone has a very individual voice. I’d certainly smell a rat if I was given a piece of writing that I didn’t match with other pieces I’d read before.

Proseccoinamug · 24/06/2019 14:03

DH is a uni lecturer and he’s been involved in two unfair practice cases involving this very thing only in the past week. Neither student was allowed to graduate, despite an impeccable record until this point.

Asking for an extension and handing in a dissertation that scrapes a pass is much better than risking this. It’s not only morally wrong but the consequences for you are dire if you’re caught.

NannaNoodleman · 24/06/2019 14:04

Have you asked about an extension for extenuating circumstances? Speak to your supervisor.

I had my DS prematurely in the last month of my masters dissertation and then a few family crises, and a big bereavement. I know how you feel, I was overwhelmed too and it all felt hopeless and destined to fail.

I was given two extensions. My dissertation was a massive bag of shite but I passed it.

Please talk to your supervisor and look after yourself.

FatherBuzzCagney · 24/06/2019 14:05

Deferring isn't an option but committing fraud to get a degree you haven't earned is Hmm?

Word of warning, OP: most faked essays and dissertation also contain elements of plagiarised material (because they are cutting corners too), so the software and/or a careful supervisor will pick it up. It's one of the reasons I always treat minor plagiarism cases seriously.

Get an extension. Extensions are made for situations like this.

Waveysnail · 24/06/2019 14:06

Get an extension

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 24/06/2019 14:06

I wouldn't, too risky and I imagine it would hang over you, possibly to the point of making your degree worthless in your own eyes.

Could you take some time off work, either signed off sick or unpaid leave to give yourself a breathing space. I also have a diagnosis of ptsd and have sleep issues...some days I exist in a complete and utter fog with no clue what I'm doing.

Then break it down into little bits, even if it's just a paragraph a day, more if you feel up to it. Or what about focusing on the other half and then if you have time/feel up to it, revisiting the first 6000 per your tutor's feedback.

historyrocks · 24/06/2019 14:07

I'm a uni lecturer and there have been times when it's obvious that someone has bought a piece of coursework--the writing style was different and it was far superior in quality to other coursework. From my position, it's never justifiable.

With regard to your particular situation, it's pretty common for people doing a master's to struggle at this point. Both of my students this year are A+, but they've recently been questioning their ability to finish the dissertation. My uni would consider a mitigating circumstances appeal, where we would look at the spread of grades over the year and make some compensation if the dissertation grade was clearly out of line. Ask for advice from your supervisor.

Purpleartichoke · 24/06/2019 14:08

If you can’t do the work, you don’t deserve the degree. It really is that simple. If you have truly extraordinary circumstances, then talk to the school about an extension.

Cheating is very likely to be discovered, especially since they have already seen a draft. You could end up with absolutely nothing.

wildcherries · 24/06/2019 14:10

Ask for an extension. Really not worth the risk. Aside from it being just not right to do. I think you'd regret it.

Norma27 · 24/06/2019 14:10

I was studying for a masters and had a late miscarriage. I was given an extension for exams etc within a couple of hours of submitting my paperwork.
Please don’t cheat. What a waste all that studying will have been when you get caught - which you will.
Good luck x

SusanneLinder · 24/06/2019 14:10

Absolutely not ! Its cheating and fraud. I am not knocking you for considering it, as you are obviously stressed( and am sure many Uni students have thought about it), but it is not worth it. You have put so much into your course , don't mess it up. Even if you did "buy one" , could still be shite and could fail you.
Speak to your lecturer and get an extension.

Waveysnail · 24/06/2019 14:11

Why does it need a rewrite? Did you go off course? Is it the content?
