There is nothing, nothing I say, that cannot be recreated in veg form Grin

Well I like your sense of humour OP.

PinkyLovePerky · 24/06/2019 14:37

When someone says they don't like bacon they are either lying or a traitor to the people.

Well, you’d like fake bacon then as it smells nothing like the real deal.

it just amuses me that people stop eating meat, to eat fake meat.

This.

I / We are eating less and less meat but there are so many healthy, tasty alternatives I simply cannot understand why people eat stuff that looks like meat but isn't..... maybe it's because they think meals need to be in a certain format ("meat and two veg") so they need to replace meat with something that looks like it in order to be eating properly.
Where I live we don't have many vegan "ersatz meat" options readily available to buy which is not a problem for us, but I think a lot of people who buy these substitues would struggle to feed themselves adequately if they had to shop where I do.

forkfun · 24/06/2019 14:44

@PinkyLovePerky now that's a rasher I could get on board with.

PinkyLovePerky · 24/06/2019 14:55

Apparently you can make fake bacon out of rice paper, would anyone like the recipe?

However it's also worth pointing out that fish don't have fingers either so I think fish fingers are a bit of a misleading product anyway confused grin.

You just reminded me of DS1's favourite book when he was little 'Barry the Fish with fingers'. I read it 4 gazillion times. I miss Barry...

I’ve found him noodle

You shouldn’t be allowed to call anything a sausage if it doesn’t contain both lips and arseholes.

Ok thanks Hugs I understand what you're getting at now Grin

And for my part - I don't think it's weird to make vegetables into burgers, but I do think it's weird to make vegetables into a burger that attempts to mimic the cow. It is quite exhausting, you're right.

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 24/06/2019 17:06

I am probably alone here but quorn bacon is amazing!

PinkyLovePerky · 24/06/2019 17:10

Does it taste like real bacon Carrot?

goldface · 24/06/2019 17:30

I've been vegetarian for over thirty years. For me it's not about having a meat like replacement. It's about having lots of variety and choices and options. Sometimes if the others are having sausages and mash it's a nice easy option for me to have quorn sausages and mash.
I do actually like the quorn bacon, not to replace actual bacon, it's just makes quite a nice tasting sandwich in its own right.
I don't come at any of these options from the POV of comparing it to a meat product. It's been so long since I've eaten meat I don't think of it as an option for me anyway.
I think an earlier poster said for some people it's about having something to eat that isn't produced as a result of processes they don't believe in and I think that is true to many.
If you are a committed meat eater than lots of vege options may seem like weird substitutes but for me it's just about having a broader range of things to eat and as a vegetarian that had to eat a LOT of cheese and broccoli bakes in the 1980s that can only be a good thing.

noodlenosefraggle · 24/06/2019 17:45

My kids like quorn bacon and ham. I think it's vile, but it makes their packed lunches easier!

notagoodidea · 24/06/2019 17:50

Bacon

PinkyLovePerky · 24/06/2019 17:52

I hear what you are saying @goldface. I stopped eating meat in 1982. I had to be very creative with what was available. Thank goodness for Rose Elliot.

Back then vegetarian food was all about health and brown everything. Modern day vegetarianism often seems to have gone too far the other way. Especially for the ‘relaxed’ vegetarians.

i wouldnt eat turkey or meat jerky if it had real meat in it let alone a fake flavoured substitute

Fyette · 24/06/2019 18:30

Meh, I never liked jerky so this would not appeal to me. But I loved chicken nuggets before I went vegetarian eight years ago, and now Quorn nuggets help me satisfy the occasional craving. Obviously am one of those people who switched to a vegetarian diet because of the issues I have with the meat industry, not for health reasons (yolo) or personal preferences (I did really love bacon and chicken).

Carrotcakeforbreakfast · 24/06/2019 18:35

PinkyLovePerky

It is similar but not like real bacon no. The texture is different. I never liked real bacon but love this.
Quorn bacon, fried egg and HP on crusty bread. Mmm

thesunisoutatlast · 24/06/2019 18:43

I was looking for cauliflower grills in the veggie section of Tesco's. It's my current pregnancy craving for all types of veggie burger and I used to have the Cauli grills when I was a veggie a long time back. I couldn't find them, maybe they don't make them anymore? I didn't eat meat substitutes very often then, being a veggie wasn't as accepted. But I was stunned by the range of meat free meat items now. Meat free meat pie / meat free sausage rolls etc. I don't get it because I generally didn't eat meat because I didn't like the taste it it or the idea of it. Looking like meat is a big put off for me, but there must be a market for it.

I'm not really a pure veggie now, my I don't eat much meat/ fish, but I home cook my stuff rather than stick stuff in the oven.

PinkyLovePerky · 24/06/2019 19:21

Aldi or Lidl do cauliflower grills, dh bought some recently. Also I think I’ve seen them in sainsburys.
