To not give up my seat?

bottomfellout · 24/06/2019 11:43

Currently in the middle of a 5 hour train journey with my 7yo. We got on at the first station and will be getting off 3 stops before final station. We are sat in our reserved seats, confirmation on the little display above our heads saying reserved from our starting and finishing stations.

At the last station 20 minutes ago a man got on and said ‘you’re in my seat’ and started to move my bags. I told him I wasn’t, grabbed my bag, showed him my ticket and the seat display. He showed me his ticket and he’s also reserved for the same seat. I told him he should go and find the guard, that there are plenty of free seats (although don’t know if they’re reserved).

He won’t go and find the guard, he wants his seat. He’s now standing right next to me (probably watching me type), having just had a loud phone call (which I’m pretty sure was imaginary as we went through a tunnel) about how he can’t prepare for the presentation as a stuck up bitch won’t move out of his seat. He’s huffing and sighing and I’m wondering whether he’ll stay standing over me for the next 2.5 hours.

I don’t want ds to hear this bloke being a prick but I really don’t see why I should move. Ds is currently plugged into his iPad so hasn’t noticed.

Sorry cross post. But just goes to show.

DdraigGoch · 24/06/2019 13:09

I'd imagine that the guards will change on arrival at New Street. The new one may well do a full ticket check.

At least he has buggered of 😂

MarianneAgain · 24/06/2019 13:12

What @Lockheart said:

If the sign above the seat says "reserved from 'your starting station' to 'your destination'" then it's definitely him who is in the wrong carriage or on the wrong train, given he got on at a completely different stop!

Hope he gets his comeuppance. I regularly have to move people from my pre-booked seat (some people just seem unable to read their ticket correctly) but I am always polite and generally ask the surrounding people to confirm which carriage we are in as generally that's the problem. If there are plenty of available seats then he is acting like a toddler to be sitting on the floor.

OP text BTP & they will get on at the next station. Please please tell the conductor as this man can’t get away with intimidating you.

gottastopeatingchocolate · 24/06/2019 13:15

Of course, if he IS on the wrong train, even his ticket might not be valid, not just his seat reservation!!

I didn’t tweet in the end as internet has been very on and off. Then by the time I got it back he’d flounced. That’s not me in the tweet but very similar situation. I think there must be a glitch as several other people have had it in this carriage. Everyone else has just gone and sat in a free seat rather than get in a huff about it.

No sign of a guard asking me to pay the upgrade fee as yet.

Judging by the timings you've mentioned though, I'd imagine that he's leaving at Wolves anyway.

foreverhanging · 24/06/2019 13:21

He sounds like an absolute peen

MyOtherProfile · 24/06/2019 13:22

Wow rude man.

SirGawain · 24/06/2019 13:24

I was once told I was in the wrong seat at a well known theatre. We compared tickets and it turned out that they had come on the wrong day. They did have the grace to apologise and hopefully were able to return on the right day.

clucky3 · 24/06/2019 13:29

Does one of you have a split ticket? I often take that train and usually if you buy a split ticket you get two separate seat reservations. There are often misunderstandings over this when someone sits down for the first portion of the their ticket and doesn't realise that someone else has reserved the seat for the second part of the journey

SauvignonBlanche · 24/06/2019 13:30

What a twat, hope you see a guard soon.

Theweasleytwins · 24/06/2019 13:30

I got on a train and timidly told a man he was in my seat. He moved straight away
I was in the wrong carriage

Another time i got on a super busy train and (double/triple checked) a man was in my seat, asked him to move, he said no, i said its ny seat and he moved into the reserved seat next to me. A lady then got on and said i was in her seat, i showed her my ticket, turned out the man was in her seat so he grumply moved

EleanorReally · 24/06/2019 13:35

Everyone was being very British, apart from this man by the sound of things.

I sat in reserved seats on a coach, had no idea,
I had to move, quite glad actually because the reserved seats were very uncomfortable, lack of leg room Grin

Oulidae · 24/06/2019 13:37

Sounds like everyone got what they wanted in the end. You stayed in your seat and he got to sit in first class. Always nice when these threads have a happy ending Smile

SunshineCake · 24/06/2019 13:38

Did you move to first class, OP?

velourvoyageur · 24/06/2019 13:41

Grin Grin at him sitting on the floor!

Oo entitled Vair Important Men on trains.
Recently was in train waiting to leave Paddington and a man came on & asked if he could use my charger which he could well see I was using. I said ah no, I'm using it. He went over all softly sarcastic, 'oh you're using it are you', and then launched into an impassioned spiel about how he really needed it (he didn't). He eventually sat down, kept despairingly examining his £££ dead phone, sighing and shooting wounded glances in my direction for the rest of his 20 min journey and then asked the ticket man if he could use his charger when he came by Grin

IsabellaLinton · 24/06/2019 13:42

He then said he would end up ill if he carried on sitting on the floor

Poor helpless little guy being forced to sit on the floor against his will! Grin

sashh · 24/06/2019 13:45

Tell him to get the guard and the guard will put him in first class.

Fortheloveofscience · 24/06/2019 13:46

OP you should have included voting buttons, I’d have loved to see 100% YANBU!

sotired2 · 24/06/2019 13:48

We had this once got on to find people in our reserved seats pointed this out to them and they said they had these seats also reserved. Pointed out they were already on train and seat ticket said from our station then got told we had a problem as they where their sears and not moving. Very packed train with 2 young kids and having to find split seats. Any way guard came down and I explained issue. She double checked their tickets and yes they had booked those seats but for the same train the day before so they got a fine for not having correct ticket for train they where on and told to shift out of our seats so we could sit together - I had to try really hard not to look smug!

Everanewbie · 24/06/2019 13:49

Why do some people on trains seem to think that a laptop makes them more worthy of a seat/space than everyone else?!

OP, you've done nothing wrong here. This guy is completely unreasonable.

bottomfellout · 24/06/2019 13:50

That sounds fabulous sotired. I wouldn’t have been able to keep a straight face.
